This study expands the U-model based control(U-control in short) concept and formulation, a universal model-independent framework for designing control systems, into Volterra series modelled nonlinear systems. With this framework, various Volterra series control schemes can be universally achieved with relative concise/general formulation. In techniques, this study takes U-model structure to realise U-Volterra series model conversion for model inversion and designs the invariant linear stable controller in a feedback loop to lay a basis for specifying system transient and steady state performances. Heuristically, a bench test example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the design procedure, as well as the routines in applications.

Modeling of batch process based on higher order partial least squares

The products of batch processes are closely related to the daily life of modern people, and it is crucial for batch process monitoring to establish a model based on the normal process data sets. In this paper, according to the characteristics of batch process, a new generalized multilinear regression model, termed the higher order partial least squares (HOPLS), is introduced with the aim to better model the three-way batch data. It differs substantially from the traditional modeling approach, and instead of unfolding the three-way array to a two-way array, it explains the data by a sum of orthogonal Tucker tensors. Higher order orthogonal iteration (HOSVD), tensor transformation and higher order orthogonal iteration (HOOI) are used to find the latent vectors, which contain the maximum information of independent variables and dependent variables simultaneously. And the loading vectors are calculated at the same time. For the new observation values, the dependent variables will be predicted through the output of the model. Finally, the feasibility and efficiency of the method are verified through the PenSim2.0 simulation platform. © All Rights Reserved

This paper considers the problem of designing of iterative learning control (ILC) laws for linear batch processes. Unlike the majority of existing results about ILC law design for linear batch processes over repetitive/two-dimensional setting where Lyapunov theory is applied, this study is focused on formulating the ILC law design procedures by transforming it into an equivalent problem of (structural) stability analysis for a linear Roesser model for two-dimensional (2D) systems. Then, based on a non-conservative version of stability and stabilization conditions for linear 2D systems, suitable PD-type ILC laws are derived by the application of the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the validity of the proposed design procedure and some advantages are emphasized when compared to the existing alternatives.

Hybrid route to produce acrylic acid from sugarcane molasses

This work presents the synthesis of acrylic acid by hybrid route from sugarcane molasses fermentation and later acid lactic dehydration. Lactic acid was produced by sugarcane molasses fermentation using the Lactobacillus plantarum CCT 5731 bacteria in bioreactor BioFlo 415 at 37 °C. After of 46.4 h of fermentation 50.6 g/L of lactic acid was obtained with productivity of 1.1 g/L.h which was subsequently concentred to 152 g/L and stored to dehydration stage. Both commercial lactic acid and lactic acid obtained through fermentation stage were dehydrated by catalysts supported on basic zeolite (NaY) in a tubular reactor at 300 °C and continuous flow of CO2 (30 mL/min). The largest selectivity (25.7 %) for acrylic acid was obtained when the commercial lactic acid and KBr/NaY were used. When lactic acid obtained by fermentation a maximum acrylic acid selectivity of 16.7 % was achieved using KI/NaY. The main issue objective of this work is to implement an optimization strategy through a two-layer structure where the search for optimal operational variables is made through of the algorithms optimization - Successive quadratic programming - SQP. The considered process is based on the hydrogenation of phenol for production of cyclo-hexanol in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The objective function to be considered for the optimization is to maximize production of cyclo-hexanol, through a steady-state model while maintaining the conversion of phenol at the exit of the reactor under environmental constraints. Factorial design and response surface analysis in a simulation study of a three-phase catalytic slurry reactor is used to identify the impact that each variable has on the system as well as the interaction among then. An improvement of 5.5% in cyclo-hexanol conversion was observed for the optimized variables (O H = 259 kg/h, O Ni = 53 kg/h).The resulted model for the response surface was used as a flrst objective function for the SQP optimization. In order to separate the chromatogram peaks and spectra from the High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD) data set, a separation model of Generalized Reference Curve Measurement and its solution by multi-target Bare Bones Particle Swarm optimization (GRCMmBBPSO) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, parameters are constructed which will generate Reference Curves (RCs) for chromatogram peaks. Secondly, the GRCM model is proposed to transform all these parameters to scalar values, which indicate the possibility for the HPLC-DAD data set containing chromatogram peaks similar to the RCs constructed by corresponding parameters. Then, the algorithm of mBBPSO is introduced to calculate the optimal parameters by minimizing the scalar values. Finally, the spectra are estimated. Through simulations and experiments, following conclusions are drawn: (1) the GRCMmBBPSO method can extract chromatogram peaks from the simulation data set without knowing the number of the compounds in advance even when a severe overlap and white noise exist;(2) the GRCMmBBPSO method can be applied to real HPLC-DAD data set.

In the pursuit of personalized medicine, there is a growing demand for computational models with parameters that are easily obtainable to accelerate the development of potential solutions. Blood tests, owing to their affordability, accessibility, and routine use in healthcare, offer valuable biomarkers for assessing hemostatic balance in thrombotic and bleeding disorders. Incorporating these biomarkers into computational models of blood coagulation is crucial for creating patient-specific models, which allow for the analysis of the influence of these biomarkers on clot formation. This systematic review aims to examine how clinically relevant biomarkers are integrated into computational models of blood clot formation, thereby advancing discussions on integration methodologies, identifying current gaps, and recommending future research directions. A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, focusing on ten clinically significant biomarkers associated with hemostatic disorders: D-dimer, fibrinogen, Von Willebrand factor, factor VIII, P-selectin, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), antithrombin III, protein C, and protein S. By utilizing this set of biomarkers, this review underscores their integration into computational models and emphasizes their integration in the context of venous thromboembolism and hemophilia. Eligibility criteria included mathematical models of thrombin generation, blood clotting, or fibrin formation under flow, incorporating at least one of these biomarkers. A total of 53 articles were included in this review. Results indicate that commonly used biomarkers such as D-dimer, PT, and APTT are rarely and superficially integrated into computational blood coagulation models. Additionally, the kinetic parameters governing the dynamics of blood clot formation demonstrated significant variability across studies, with discrepancies of up to 1,000-fold. Tissue engineering is the most fascinating domain of medical technology and has emerged as a promising alternative approach in the treatment of malfunctioning or lost organs where patients are treated by using their own cells, grown on a polymer support so that a tissue part is regenerated from the natural cells. This support is known as scaffold and is needed to serve as an adhesive substrate for the implanted cells and a physical support to guide the formation of the new organs. In addition to facilitating cell adhesion, promoting cell growth, and allowing the retention of differentiated cell functions, the scaffold should be biocompatible, biodegradable, highly porous with a large surface/volume ratio, mechanically strong, and malleable. The scaffold degrades while a new organ or tissue is formed. A number of three-dimensional porous scaffolds fabricated from various kinds of biodegradable materials have been developed. Bioabsorbable polymers have been identified as alternative materials for biomedical applications, since these polymers are degraded by simple hydrolysis to products that can be metabolized by the human body. With their excellent biocompatibility, poly-lactones such as poly-lactic acid (PLA), poly-glycolic acid (PGA), and poly-caprolactone (PCL), as well as their copolymers are becoming the most commonly used synthetic biodegradable polymers as fixation devices materials for biomedical devices. Among the biomaterials (biopolymers) used in the medical field, the poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has received significant attention. Poly-lactic acid (PLA) is at present one of the most promising biodegradable polymers for this purpose and has convincingly demonstrated the proof of concept for using in bioabsorbable polymer as bone fixation devices, owing to its mechanical property profile, thermoplastic possibility and biological properties, such as biocompatibility and biodegradability. For robust control and iterative optimization of industrial batch processes with polytopic uncertainties, this paper proposes a robust output feedback based iterative learning control (ILC) design in terms of finite frequency range stability specifications. Robust stability conditions for the closed-loop ILC system along both time and batch directions are first established based on the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma and linear repetitive system theory. To facilitate the ILC controller design with respect to process uncertainties described in a polytopic form, extended sufficient conditions for the system stability are then derived in terms of matrix inequalities. Correspondingly, a two-stage heuristic approach is developed to iteratively compute feasible ILC controller gains for implementation. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control design.
