To adjust the inertia weight in particle swarm optimization(PSO), we propose a novel self-adaptive particle swarm optimization algorithm based on ant system(AS-PSO). First, the inertia weight space is divided into several regions;each of them is given the same initial intensity of pheromone trails. The probability for selecting a parameter region for each particle is determined by the intensity of the region pheromone trails and the particle's a priori knowledge of the search space. The evolution search is then performed in spaces of solutions. Finally the trail of the regions is updated according to the information of evolution. Experiments indicate that the promising AS-PSO algorithm realizes the evolution and the self-adaptation of the inertia weight by ant colony algorithm without increasing the function calls in evaluation. Results show that AS-PSO obviously outperforms the original self-adaptive PSO and the APSO-VI, in which the parameter is adjusted according to the velocity information. Furthermore, satisfactory results have been obtained when AS-SPO algorithm is applied to estimate the parameter of complex system models.

Estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) is a kind of evolutionary algorithm which updates and samples from probabilistic model in evolutionary course. The key of EDA is the construction of probability model suitable for real distribution. Gaussian distribution is widely used in EDAs but the assumption of normality is not realistic for many real-life problems. In this paper, a new EDA using kernel density estimation (KEDA) is introduced. Adaptive change strategy of kernel width is presented and selection scheme, sampling method are also given cooperated with KEDA. The results of 5 benchmark functions show that results of KEDA outperform PBIL C , UMDA C , EDA G , H-EDA.

The present work introduces an investigation study about the optimization of a three-phase catalytic slurry reactor with phase changes. The study aims to determine the optimal operational conditions and, in a second stage, advancedcontrol algorithms will be evaluated. A dynamic heterogeneous mathematical model formulation was used and genetic algorithms (GA) were employed to solve a nonlinear quadratic problem subject to bounds on the variables. The solutions obtained using the genetic algorithms gave suitable results to optimize the process by adjusting parameters as the reactor feed temperature and the flow rate of one of the reactants. It was possible to reach operation conditions that ensured a suitable profit and an acceptable compromise with the specifications of the desired product.

Vitamin A (retinol) and derivatives (retinyl esters, retinoic acid, retinaldehyde), are of great commercial potential in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals such as skin care products. Vitamin A is necessary for maintenance of healthy epithelial tissue and can prevent the inception or progress of skin cancers by stimulating normal cell differentiation. Deficiency of vitamin A is usually accompanied by a number of severe diseases. The preformed vitamin A (retinol) is found in foods of the animal source. The vegetables are vitamin A source under carotenoids form that will be converted to vitamin A in the organism. The retinol is a pure form of the vitamin A. The retinol, alcohol of the vitamin A is the most active of the retinoids. Retinol is used as an antiwrinkle in the cosmetics industry. It is a hydrophobic vitamin A compound that exerts a potent influence on cell differentiation, proliferation, homeostasis, and development. To facilitate the formulation of the some products, the retinol needs to be in concentrated form. However, due to sensibility of the retinol to temperature, conventional methods can not be adequate. In this work, the retinol drying was studied, using the freeze drying process and microwave vacuum drying with the goal to reduce the water tenor, that is to say, to increase the retinol concentration, and consequently to increase the shelf life. Freeze drying is a drying process, where the water or aqueous substance is removed from frozen solution through sublimation. In this process the water passes direct from the solid phase to vapor phase. In order to do that, it is necessary that the sublimation temperature zone be bellow the triple point. The aim of the freeze drying process is to conserve the product, reducing the activity water. This process guarantees the preservation of the original product characteristics.
