The popularity of local meshless methods in the field of numerical simulations has increased greatly in recent years. This is mainly due to the fact that they can operate on scattered nodes and that they allow a direct control over the approximation order and basis functions. In this paper we analyse two popular variants of local strong form meshless methods, namely the radial basis function-generated finite differences (RBF-FD) using polyharmonic splines (PHS) augmented with monomials, and the weighted least squares (WLS) approach using only monomials. Our analysis focuses on the accuracy and stability of the numerical solution computed on scattered nodes in a two- and three-dimensional domain. We show that while the WLS variant is a better choice when lower order approximations are sufficient, the RBF-FD variant exhibits a more stable behavior and a higher accuracy of the numerical solution for higher order approximations, but at the cost of higher computational complexity. © 2022 Croatian Society MIPRO.

When the deformations of a solid body are sufficiently large, parts of the body undergo a permanent deformation commonly refereed to as plastic deformation. Several plasticity models describing such phenomenon have been proposed, e.g. von Mises, Tresca, etc. Traditionally, the finite element method (FEM) is the numerical tool of choice for engineers who are solving such problems. In this work, however, we present the implementation of the von Mises plasticity model with non-linear isotropic hardening in our in-house developed MEDUSA library, utilizing a variant of meshless methods - namely the radial basis function-generated finite differences (RBF-FD). We define a simple plane stress case, where a 2D block is fixed at one edge, and a tensile force, which causes the block to deform, is applied to it at the opposite edge. We show that results are in good agreement with the numerical solution obtained by Abaqus FEA, a commercial FEM solver. © 2022 Croatian Society MIPRO.

As the foundation of cloud computing, Server consolidation allows multiple computer infrastructures running as virtual machines in a single physical node. It improves the utilization of most kinds of resource but memory under x86 architecture. Because of inaccurate memory usage estimate and the lack of memory resource management, there is much service performance degradation in data centers, even though they have occupied a large amount of memory. Furthermore, memory becomes insufficient for a physical server when a lot of virtual machines depend on it. In order to improve this, we present a dynamic memory scheduling system called DMSS, which can manage memory resources in server consolidation environments and allocate memory among virtual machines on demand. We have designed and implemented the corresponding memory scheduling policy based on Xen virtualization platform to enhance memory efficiency and achieve service level agreement. The benchmark shows that DMSS can make an accurate and rapid response to memory changes and save more than 30% physical memory with less than 5% performance degradation. DMSS actually brings in economic benefits to cloud service providers because more virtual machines can be accommodated at lower costs. © 2012 IEEE.

Storing files at the network edge has become a new paradigm of storage systems, which is promising to mitigate network congestion and reduce file retrieval latency. However, the traditional file storage scheme cannot effectively meet the requirements of rapid indexing and load balance when applied directly to the edge. Moreover, due to the dynamic nature of the edge environment where edge servers can join or leave at will, it is necessary for the storage scheme to adjust with minimal disruption. In this paper, we propose EdgeAnchor, a novel edge storage strategy that is composed of the two-layer hash mappings. The first layer, file-to-bucket mapping, adopts the pseudo-deletion algorithm to deal with the variations in file size, while the second layer utilizes the multiple bucket-to-server mapping to adapt to the heterogeneity in the servers' storage capacities. Furthermore, EdgeAnchor constructs a list of deleted or added working sets for each bucket and creates a dictionary for the mappings between buckets and edge servers. In the manner, EdgeAnchor ensures a rapid file index and balances server load at the dynamic network edge. We also attach the mathematical analyses to EdgeAnchor, which theoretically proves its logarithmic complexity of hash operations and memory accesses. The experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate that EdgeAnchor achieves the file index throughput twice as high as that of Consistent Hashing, under the constraints of load balance. Additionally, it ensures a low and stable data migration volume, when adding or removing edge servers consecutively. © 2023 IEEE.

Coastal and Regional Ocean Community model (CROCO) is a modeling system used in oceanographic simulations. CROCO solves primitive hydrodynamic equations for momentum, heat and mass transport on a three dimensional, terrain following grid. Several biogeochemical models are already implemented in CROCO, including the PISCES model, which it borrows from NEMO, a different oceanography modeling system. While PISCES is a highly complex model, used in many oceanographic applications, it lacks variable stoichiometry and some plankton functional types needed in certain applications. On the other hand, Biogeochemical Flux Model (BFM) is a dedicated biogeochemistry modeling system, customizable and of user-defined complexity. It can be run as a standalone model or in conjunction with an oceanographic simulation. Previously we have reported on our work regarding the incorporation of BFM into CROCO. In this work we address the performance aspects of this coupling. Namely, compared to e.g. PISCES, BFM is a much more complex model with more tracers, which makes it more computationally expensive. It is therefore of the essence to investigate, and to highlight possible areas of improvement in this coupling's computational performance. © 2023 MIPRO Croatian Society.

This paper presents the first steps toward a graph comparison method based on matching matchings, or in other words, comparison of independent edge sets in graphs. The novelty of our approach is to use matchings for calculating distance of graphs in case of edge-colored graphs. This idea can be used as a preprocessing step of graph querying applications, to speed up exact and inexact graph matching methods. We introduce the notion of colored matchings and prove some properties of them in edge colored complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs in case of two colors. © 2013 IEEE.

SUMMARY In this paper, we propose three Deflection-Routing-based Multicast (DRM) schemes for a bufferless NoC. The DRM scheme without packets replication (DRM-noPR) sends multicast packet through a non deterministic path. The DRM schemes with adaptive packets replication (DRM-PR-src and DRMYR-all) replicate multicast packets at the source or intermediate node according to the destination position and the state of output ports to reduce the average multicast latency. We also provide fault tolerant supporting in these schemes through a reinforcement learning based method to reconfigure the routing table to tolerate permanent faulty links in the network. Simulation results illustrate that the DRM-PR-all scheme achieves 4l6o, 43cc and 37% less latency on average than that of the DRM-noPR scheme and 27cc, 29cc and 2S6o less latency on average than that of the DRM-PR-src scheme under three synthetic traffic patterns respectively. In addition, all three fault tolerant DRM schemes achieve acceptable performance degradation at various link fault rates without any packet lost. Cyclops is a new vertex-oriented graph-parallel framework for writing distributed graph analytics. Unlike existing distributed graph computation models, Cyclops retains simplicity and computation-efficiency by synchronously computing over a distributed immutable view, which grants a vertex with read-only access to all its neighboring vertices. The view is provided via readonly replication of vertices for edges spanning machines during a graph cut. Cyclops follows a centralized computation model by assigning a master vertex to update and propagate the value to its replicas unidirectionally in each iteration, which can significantly reduce messages and avoid contention on replicas. Being aware of the pervasively available multicore-based clusters, Cyclops is further extended with a hierarchical processing model, which aggregates messages and replicas in a single multicore machine and transparently decomposes each worker into multiple threads ondemand for different stages of computation. We have implemented Cyclops based on an open-source Pregel clone called Hama. Our evaluation using a set of graph algorithms on an in-house multicore cluster shows that Cyclops outperforms Hama from 2.06X to 8.69X and 5.95X to 23.04X using hash-based and Metis partition algorithms accordingly, due to the elimination of contention on messages and hierarchical optimization for the multicore-based clusters. Cyclops (written in Java) also has comparable performance with PowerGraph (written in C++) despite the language difference, due to the significantly lower number of messages and avoided contention. Virtual machine introspection, which provides tamperresistant, high-fidelity 'out of the box' monitoring of virtual machines, has many prominent security applications including VM-based intrusion detection, malware analysis and memory forensic analysis. However, prior approaches are either intrusive in stopping the world to avoid race conditions between introspection tools and the guest VM, or providing no guarantee of getting a consistent state of the guest VM. Further, there is currently no effective means for timely examining the VM states in question. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, called TxIntro, which retrofits hardware transactional memory (HTM) for concurrent, timely and consistent introspection of guest VMs. Specifically, TxIntro leverages the strong atomicity of HTM to actively monitor updates to critical kernel data structures. Then TxIntro can mount introspection to timely detect malicious tampering. To avoid fetching inconsistent kernel states for introspection, TxIntro uses HTM to add related synchronization states into the read set of the monitoring core and thus can easily detect potential inflight concurrent kernel updates. We have implemented and evaluated TxIntro based on Xen VMM on a commodity Intel Haswell machine that provides restricted transactional memory (RTM) support. To demonstrate the effectiveness of TxIntro, we implemented a set of kernel rootkit detectors using TxIntro. Evaluation results show that TxIntro is effective in detecting these rootkits, and is efficient in adding negligible performance overhead. © 2014 IEEE.
