When solving partial differential equations on scattered nodes using the Radial Basis Function generated Finite Difference (RBF-FD) method, one of the parameters that must be chosen is the stencil size. Focusing on Polyharmonic Spline RBFs with monomial augmentation, we observe that it affects the approximation accuracy in a particularly interesting way - the solution error oscillates under increasing stencil size. We find that we can connect this behaviour with the spatial dependence of the signed approximation error. Based on this observation we are then able to introduce a numerical quantity that indicates whether a given stencil size is locally optimal. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Domain discretization is an essential part of the solution procedure in numerical simulations. Meshless methods simplify the domain discretization to positioning of nodes in the interior and on the boundary of the domain. However, generally speaking, the shape of the boundary is often undefined and thus needs to be constructed before it can be discretized with a desired internodal spacing. Domain shape construction is far from trivial and is the main challenge of this paper. We tackle the simulation of moving boundary problems where the lack of domain shape information can introduce difficulties. We present a solution for 2D surface reconstruction from discretization points using cubic splines and thus providing a surface description anywhere in the domain. We also demonstrate the presented algorithm in a simulation of phase-change-like problem. © 2021 Croatian Society MIPRO.

The China dual-functional lithium–lead test blanket module(DFLL-TBM) is a liquid Li Pb blanket concept developed by the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for testing in ITER to validate relevant tritium breeding and shielding technologies. In this study, neutronic calculations of DFLL-TBM were carried out using a massively parallel three-dimensional transport code, Hydra, with the Fusion Evaluated Nuclear Data Library/MG. Hydra was developed by the Nuclear Engineering Computational Physics Lab based on the discrete ordinates method and has been devoted to neutronic analysis and shielding evaluation for nuclear facilities. An in-house Monte Carlo code(MCX) was employed to verify the discretized calculation model used by Hydra for the DFLL-TBM calculations. The results showed two key aspects:(1) In most material zones,Hydra solutions are in good agreement with the reference MCX results within 1%, and the maximal relative difference of the neutron flux is merely 3%, demonstrating the correctness of the calculation model;(2) while the current DFLL-TBM design meets the operation shielding requirement of ITER for 4 years, it does not satisfy the tritium self-sufficiency requirement. Compared to the two-step approach, Hydra produces higher accuracies as it does not rely on the homogenization technique during the calculation process. The parallel efficiency tests of Hydra using the DFLL-TBM model also showed that this code maintains a high parallel efficiency on O(100) processors and, as a result, is able to significantly improve computing performance through parallelization. Parameter studies have been carried out by varying the thickness of the beryllium armor layer and the tritium breeding zone to understand the influence of the beryllium layer and breeding zone thickness on tritium breeding performance. This establishes a foundation for further improvement in the tritium production performance of DFLL-TBM.

Meshless methods are an active and modern branch of numerical analysis with many intriguing benefits. One of the main open research questions related to local meshless methods is how to select the best possible stencil - a collection of neighbouring nodes - to base the calculation on. In this paper, we describe the procedure for generating a labelled stencil dataset and use a variation of pointNet - a deep learning network based on point clouds - to create a classifier for the quality of the stencil. We exploit features of pointNet to implement a model that can be used to classify differently sized stencils and compare it against models dedicated to a single stencil size. The model is particularly good at detecting the best and the worst stencils with a respectable area under the curve (AUC) metric of around 0.90. There is much potential for further improvement and direct application in the meshless domain. © 2022 Croatian Society MIPRO.

Manual deployment of the application usually requires expertise both about the underlying system and the application. Automatic service deployment can improve deployment significantly by using on-demand deployment and self-healing services. To support these features this paper describes an extension the globus workspace service. This extension includes creating virtual appliances for grid services, service deployment from a repository, and influencing the service schedules by altering execution planning services, candidate set generators or information systems.

The P-GRADE portal is a workflow-oriented Grid portal that originally served Globus-2 Grids. The Portal introduced an easy-to-use workflow-centric interface on top of the job oriented Globus systems. Because Globus does not contain any resource broker, users of the P-GRADE Portal had to map workflow components onto physical resources manually. However, just recently, most of the production Grids have moved from pure Globus middleware to more advanced solutions that include broker services as well. This tendency is clearly amplified by the emergence of LCG-2 middleware, the results of EGEE, the biggest Grid project of the World. The paper describes the broker-enabled version of the P-GRADE Portal. This portal version is capable to submit workflow components into LCG2 based Grids using the Resource Broker service. This support makes the usage of production Grids significantly easier since end-users are relived from the complicated task of resource selection. © 2006 by MIPRO All rights reserved.

Previous publications of the authors have described the concept of the Grid based EMMIL emarketplace model, a new business model powered by Grid technology to improve supply chain efficiency. EMMIL. E-Marketplace Model Integrated with Logistics is a new model that brings together three entity types. seller buyer and third party logistics service provider - in the same transaction optimising the total costs and maximising the revenue. After summarising the main features of the business model and the three sided auction algorithms this paper will focus on the algorithmic questions of the repetitive optimisation showing the way how the Marketplace Support Grid can help to achieve the optimal solution within a short time frame that is necessary for the on-line business environment.

Grid portals are increasingly used to provide uniform access to the grid infrastructure. This paper describes how the P-GRADE Grid Portal could be used in a collaborative manner to facilitate group work and support the notion of Virtual Organisations. We describe the development issues involved in the construction of a collaborative portal, including ensuring a consistent view between participants of a collaborative workflow and management of proxy credentials to allow separate nodes of the workflow to be submitted to different grids. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

With the immense computing power at our disposal, the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) is becoming a day-to-day task for modern computational scientists. However, the complexity of real-life problems is such that tractable solutions do not exist. This makes it difficult to validate the numerically obtained solution, so good error estimation is crucial in such cases. It allows the user to identify problematic areas in the computational domain that may affect the stability and accuracy of the numerical method. Such areas can then be remedied by either h-or p-adaptive procedures. In this paper, we propose to estimate the error of the numerical solution by solving the same governing problem implicitly and explicitly, using a different approximation order in each case. We demonstrate the newly proposed error indicator on the solution of a synthetic twodimensional Poisson problem with tractable solution for easier validation. We show that the proposed error indicator has good potential for locating areas of high error. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the recovery of failed processes in a distributed program, causal logging schemes offer several benefits. These benefits include no rollback of unfailed processes and simple approaches to output commit. Unfortunately, previous approaches to the recovery of multiple simultaneous failures require that the distributed execution be blocked or that recovering processes coordinate. The latter requires assumptions which are not satisfactory. In this paper we present a solution that has neither of these drawbacks.
