This paper aims to design a wearable terrain recognition system, which might assist the control of powered artificial prosthetic legs. A laser distance sensor and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors were mounted on human body. These sensors were used to identify the movement state of the user, reconstruct the geometry of the terrain in front of the user while walking, and recognize the type of terrain before the user stepped on it. Different sensor configurations were investigated and compared. The designed system was evaluated on one healthy human subject when walking on an obstacle course in the laboratory environment. The results showed that the reconstructed terrain height demonstrated clearer pattern difference among studied terrains when the laser was placed on the waist than that when the laser was mounted on the shank. The designed system with the laser on the waist accurately recognized 157 out of 160 tested terrain transitions, 300ms-2870ms before the user switched the negotiated terrains. These promising results demonstrated the potential application of the designed terrain recognition system to further improve the control of powered artificial legs.

An advanced development environment contributes to research process greatly. This paper presents a novel adaptive dynamic loading and unloading mechanism applied to development environment for image processing algorithm and two implementation methods of the mechanism. Based on the inherent characteristic of variable arguments of functions in programming language and explicit linking technique for dynamic link library (DLL), the mechanism is to integrate the image processing algorithm into the DLL file which is independent from the development environment, and to make the development environment identify the normative algorithm DLL and load functions of image processing algorithm successfully when needed. The proposed mechanism has been implemented in a development environment written by C/C++ language. The results show that the development environment based on the novel mechanism can improve work efficiency by making researchers only focus on the development of image processing algorithm rather than the other inefficient and repetitive work. At the same time the standardability, reusability and confidentiality of image processing algorithm can be promoted greatly. This mechanism is also applicable to other similar systems.

Interactive object segmentation is widely used for extracting any user-interested objects from natural images. A common problem with many interactive segmentation approaches is that the object segmentation quality is degraded due to inaccurate object/background seeds provided by the user. This paper proposes an iterative adjustable graph cut to efficiently solve this problem. First, object/background seeds are initialized based on the object segmentation result obtained with the user-specified scribbles as the interactive input. Then, an iterative seed adjustment scheme is exploited to correct inaccurate seeds and extract new suitable seeds via graph cut, in which the balancing weight between energy terms are adaptively updated to protect stable seeds and speedup the iteration process. Finally, suitable seeds are obtained and graph cut is used to segment the objects. Experimental results demonstrate the better segmentation performance of our approach even if user provides rather rough seeds.

Stroke and heart attack, which could be led by a kind of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease named asatherosclerosis, would seriously cause human morbidity and mortality. And the carotid artery of intima-media thickness (IMT) is a key indicator to the disease. With the development of computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) technology, Ultrasound imaging, being real-time, economic, reliable, safe, and now seems to become a standard in vascular assessment methodology especially for the measurement of IMT. This review is an attempt to discuss the clinical relevance of measurements in clinical practice at first, and then followed by the challenges that one has to face when approaching the segmentation of ultrasound images. Secondly, the paper is presentation of common used methods for the IMT segmentation and measurement. An overview of summary and future perspectives is given in conclusion finally.

This paper presents a generic video vehicle detection approach through multiple background-based features and statistical learning. The main idea is to configure several virtual loops (as detection zones) on the image, assuming moving vehicles may cause pixel intensities and local texture to change, and then by identifying such pixel changes to detect vehicles. In this research, multiple pattern classifiers including LDA + Adaboost, SVM, and Random Forests are used to detect vehicles that are passing through virtual loops. We extract fourteen pattern features (related to foreground area, texture change, and luminance and contrast in the local virtual loop zone and the global image) to train pattern classifiers and then detect vehicles. As experimental results illustrate, the proposed approach is quite robust to detect vehicles under complex dynamic environments, and thus is able to improve the accuracy of traffic data collection in all weather for long term.

The analysis of the carotid artery wall is of paramount importance in clinical practice. Especially, the intima-media thickness is a risk index for some of the most severe acute cerebrovascular pathologies, hence, an accurate segmentation of the different layers of the carotid artery is needed. IMT is usually manually measured on longitudinal B-mode ultrasound images. In the past ten years, many computer-based techniques for intima-media thickness measurement have been proposed to overcome the limits of manual segmentation, but almost all of them require a certain degree of user interaction. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for the completely user-independent segmentation of the common carotid artery wall. Our algorithm is designed for the extraction of the intima and media layers of the distal carotid wall in ultrasound images. It is based on integrated approach consisting of common carotid artery region identification, contour initialization with threshold segmentation, intima-lumen segmentation with Snake, and media-adventitia segmentation with GVF-Snake that enables the automated tracing of the carotid walls. The acoustic impedance's difference is employed to locate common carotid artery region. Finally, the characterization of the algorithm in terms of segmentation error was evaluated with a set of 40 common carotid artery ultrasound images and compared to the segmentation traced by a trained operator. Experiments showed that a mean error lower than 1.3 pixel both on the intima and media layers was obtained, which is comparable to that obtained by means of operator dependent techniques.

A 128× 128 elements cylindrical liquid crystal （LC） lens array with electrically controllable focal length is proposed. The cylindrical LC lens array uses transparent indium tin oxide （ITO） films as electrode, avoiding to affect the optical path operating in the voltage-off status. As the top electrode of the cylindrical LC lens array contacts with LC, the operation voltage root-mean-square （RMS） amplitude can be as low as 1.4 V and the response time is about 20-30 ms. The special optical focusing feature of the cylindrical LC lens array is got. And the focal length of this array is about 60-450 μm.

Visual Simulation, which has been applied widely to provide convenience to people from every walk of life, plays a crucial role in the field of Virtual Reality. In this thesis, 8 models representing 8 typical materials, are created by MultiGen Creator, and rendered by Vega for analysis of relation between grey values in simulated pictures and real radiance. Finally, the method of infrared simulation based on Vega is proved effective in the field of military by comparison between simulated pictures and real shot pictures at different times of the day. ©2010 IEEE.
