Learning a compact and yet discriminative codebook for classifying human actions is a challenging problem. One difficulty lies in that the learning procedure is split into two independent phases (dimension reduction and clustering) and thus results in the loss of discriminative information which clustering requires. Besides, traditional used principal component analysis is not optimized for class separability and may not help to improve data separation. In this paper, we propose a novel optimization framework which unifies dimension reduction and clustering. In contrast to previous methods, our method enables to dynamically select indispensable and crucial dimensions for building a discriminative codebook. We add metric learning before clustering to provide the clustering method with an optimized distance metric. Experimental results show that our approach constructs a highly discriminative codebook and achieves comparable results to other state-of-the-art approaches.

This paper focuses on route planning, especially for unmanned aircrafts in marine environment. Firstly, new heuristic information is adopted such as threat-zone, turn maneuver and forbid-zone based on voyage heuristic information. Then, the cost function is normalized to obtain more flexible and reasonable routes. Finally, an improved sparse A* search algorithm is employed to enhance the planning efficiency and reduce the planning time. Experiment results showed that the improved algorithm for aircraft in maritime environment could find a combinational optimum route quickly, which detoured threat-zones, with fewer turn maneuver, totally avoiding forbid-zones, and shorter voyage.

Visual codebook has been popular in object classification as well as action analysis. However, its performance is often sensitive to the codebook size that is usually predefined. Moreover, the codebook generated by unsupervised methods, e.g., K-means, often suffers from the problem of ambiguity and weak efficiency. In other words, the visual codebook contains a lot of noisy and/or ambiguous words. In this paper, we propose a novel method to address these issues by constructing a compact but effective visual codebook using sparse reconstruction. Given a large codebook generated by K-means, we reformulate it in a sparse manner, and learn the weight of each word in the original visual codebook. Since the weights are sparse, they naturally introduce a new compact codebook. We apply this compact codebook to action recognition tasks and verify it on the widely used Weizmann action database. The experimental results show clearly the benefits of the proposed solution.

Object recognition is challenging problem in computer vision due to appearance variation and presence of visual clutter and occlusions. Recently manifolds are thought to be fundamental for visual perception, and manifold learning algorithms are developed for discovering intrinsical features. Selective visual attention mechanism provides tools to reduce computation cost and avoid the influence of clutter background. In this paper, we described a new object recognition method, the submanifold distance (SMD) algorithm, which is induced by the visual attention mechanism to provide complex object recognition. Experiments with airport remote sensing images illustrated that our proposed algorithm can recognize complex objects accurately, robustly and quickly.

Focus on the image compressing problem of unmanned aerial vehicle with high compression ratio, fixed compressing ratio and low computational complexity requirement, a low-complexity image-sequence compressing algorithm based on homography transformation was proposed. The image sequences were dynamically divided into frame-groups according the data from airborne inertial navigation systems, and the intermediate frames in the same frame-group was b i-directionally predicted by the first-frame and the end-frame with homography transformation. The homography matrix was got approximately by the airborne inertial navigation systems firstly and then was accurately computed by fast multiple sub-areas template matching. At the end the first frame and the residual images of the intermediate frames of the same frame-group was merged into a big image and coded by JPEG2000 to generate fixed-size code streams. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm was with high compression performance, low computational complexity and excellent capacity for code-size control and will has good prospect in engineer.

This paper presents a fast connected component labeling algorithm based on line description method and optimized tree Union-Find strategy. The algorithm transforms the pixel-connected issue, which most of proposed algorithms focus on, into line-connected issue. This algorithm is comprised of three phrases, line extraction, connected component identification and label assignment. The line description method transforms the connected pixels into line form for reducing the scan time. While the new tree Union-Find strategy diminishes the redundant root compare operations. A comparison analysis is performed with other optimized famous component labeling algorithms. Our algorithm has shown an outstanding performance with respect to the processing time, which achieves 1.1~8 times as fast as the other algorithms in various test cases.

In order to solve the problem of image degradation caused by dust environments, an image degradation model considering multiple scattering factors caused by dust was first established using the first-order multiple scattering method. Then, a dark channel prior principle was applied to present an image restoration algorithm based on the image degradation model. Finally, a particle swarm optimization algorithm was applied to optimize the atmospheric light and the exposure parameters. This optimization algorithm was established according to the criterion of the image evaluation based on kirsch operator with dual threshold. By using the method an optimistic result of image restoration was obtained. The experimental results have shown that the method not only enhanced luminance and contrast, but also discovered more detail edges information. The method provided a foundation for target recognition in the dust environments.

An adaptive SAR image enhancement method is presented for reducing the speckle noise and increasing the contrast of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. First, a fuzzy logic based filter, employing fuzzy edge to weight the contributions of pixel values in filter window, is used to filter the speckles. Second, the original SAR image is decomposed into lowfrequency component and high-frequency component. The fuzzy filtered image is viewed as the low-frequency component, and the contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization algorithm is used to increase its contrast. The highfrequency component is obtained by subtracting the low-frequency component from the original image, and its gain is controlled by fuzzy structural which employed to express the degree of a pixel belonging to structures. After processed one after the other, the two components are added together to form the final enhanced SAR image. Experimental results show the excellent effect of the proposed method by visual observation and numerical measurement. Many fine structures and little speckle noise can be seen from the enhanced SAR images. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
