In this paper, a hierarchical multirate control scheme for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed, composed of a robust model predictive controller (MPC) and a multirate integral sliding mode (MISM) controller. In particular, the MISM controller acts at a faster sampling time than the MPC controller, and reduces the effect of model uncertainties and external disturbances, in order to obtain, at the next sampling instant of the MPC controller, a value of the system state that is as close as possible to the nominal one. To obtain this result, the control variable is composed of two parts: one generated by the MPC controller, and the other by the MISM controller. The a-priori reduction of the disturbance terms turns out to be very useful in order to improve the convergence properties of the MPC controller. © 2010 IFAC.

automatic image annotation, which aims at automatically identifying and then assigning semantic keywords to the meaningful objects in a digital image, is not a very difficult task for human but has been regarded as a difficult and challenging problem to machines. In this paper, we present a hierarchical annotation scheme considering that generally human s visual identification to a scenery object is a rough-to-fine hierarchical process. First, the input image is segmented into multiple regions and each segmented region is roughly labeled with a general keyword using the multi-classification support vector machine. Since the results of rough annotation affect fine annotation directly, we construct the statistical contextual relationship to revise the improper labels and improve the accuracy of rough annotation. To obtain reasonable fine annotation for those roughly classified regions, we propose an active semi-supervised expectation-maximization algorithm, which can not only find the representative pattern of each fine class but also classify the roughly labeled regions into corresponded fine classes. Finally, the contextual relationship is applied again to revise the improper fine labels. To illustrate the effectiveness of the presented approaches, a prototype image annotation system is developed, the preliminary results of which showed that the hierarchical annotation scheme is effective.

In order to analyze the eddy current caused by the excitation signal and its influence on the secondary field response, the general analytical expressions of eddy current density for low frequency electromagnetic in cross-well is deduced. Based on the axially symmetric time harmonic electromagnetic theory, this expression is established by Helmholtz equation of electric field in radial non-uniform formation. Eddy current density distribution of infinite homogeneous conductive medium and layered media in cross-well show that the metal casing has a strong absorption to electromagnetic signal and the frequency of the emission signal has important influence on its capability of penetrating the casing. The character of EMF (electromotive force)-frequency curves for the non magnetic high resistance formation demonstrates that the low frequency electromagnetic signal can penetrate the casing perfectly, and it also shows that response signal has the highest resolution to the formation resistivity while excited by the frequency about 200Hz. ©2010 IEEE.

A modeling and verification methodology is presented for railway interlocking system which is regarded as a safety-critical system. The methodology utilizes UML (Unified Modeling Language) to model the function requirement and FSM (Finite State Machine) to verity the safety requirements of the specification. The device specifications of railway interlocking system are modeled with UML, and dynamic behaviors of the device and whole system are modeled with FSM, the safety specification is translated LTL (Linear Temporal Logic) and analyzed with NuSMV. We try to show the feasibility of improving the reliability and reducing revalidation efforts when designing and developing a decentralized railway signaling system.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

This work presents the co-simulation approach to the analysis of control systems containing detailed models of electromagnetic and electromechanical converters. In this method of analysis the attention is paid to the whole system and not only to its electromagnetic part. The latter is described by equations resulted from the two-dimensional finite element discretisation of the Maxwell equations, and is coupled weakly with the remaining part of the system. The simulation is carried out in Matlab/Simulink environment wherein the coupling is realised through the S-function. Example results regarding simulation of the operation of the control system of an electrical machine and the operation of a power electronic converter are presented and compared with available reference data.

It is the mainstream method that in human face detection and recognition with AdaBoost as the representative based on statistical learning method. Detection rates have reached a high level, and can achieve real-time detection. However, AdaBoost algorithm treats equally for different categories, there is no distinction between the cost of the different error categories. This paper presents a new cost-sensitive Ada Boost-based face detection algorithm, ensuring the detection rate and speed, effectively reducing the false detection rate, and improving the detection accuracy.

Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, a discrete structure representation of SN P systems with extended rules and without delay is proposed. Specifically, matrices are used to represent SN P systems. In order to represent the computations of SN P systems by matrices, configuration vectors are defined to monitor the number of spikes in each neuron at any given configuration;transition net gain vectors are also introduced to quantify the total amount of spikes consumed and produced after the chosen rules are applied. Nondeterminism of the systems is assured by a set of spiking transition vectors that could be used at any given time during the computation. With such matrix representation, it is quite convenient to determine the next configuration from a given configuration, since it involves only multiplication and addition of matrices after deciding the spiking transition vector. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Evolutionary games are widely studied in the fields of biology, sociology, economics and informatics. People's interests focus on how cooperation emerged in a system that individuals are selfish. We studied the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma Game evolved on BA network with genetic algorithm. Nodes in network could remember the game historical strategies and coded into gene. We show that memory length has gentle effect on cooperation level, and that some characteristic genes and frequentlyused genes emerge after some generations. We also find that cooperate strategy distributed on different degree-nodes equably. These findings give new perspectives to the illustration of cooperation behavior in biological group and society.

A simulation approach was proposed to analyze the spectra of Doppler signals in local expansion artery, which can provide a useful guidance for detecting the formation and growth progress of the aneurysms using the Doppler ultrasound technology and forecasting the size of aneurysm. Firstly, by solving Navier-Stokes equations, the velocity distributions in the vessels with various expansion degrees are calculated. Secondly, power spectral density (PSD) of the Doppler signals is estimated according to the relationship of velocity profiles and power spectral density. Finally, Doppler signals are generated using cosine-superposed methods. The results show that the spectra of Doppler signals are similar to those found in practice. Therefore, the proposed approach is useful for simulating the spectra of Doppler ultrasound signals.
