Smith predictor is very sensitive to uncertain system with variable time-delay. Using dual-locus diagram method, we first analyse the essence of Smith predictor's sensitivity and present a proposition to illustrate the system stability criteria with relation to system gain and time-delay variation. Then a new modified Smith predictor is proposed to compensate the variable time-delay system with uncertain model for set-point tracking. After that, we discuss the system internal stability and give two-degree freedom controller self-adaptive to eliminate the impact of system uncertainty with varying time-delay. Examples show the improved performance compared to previous modified Smith predictor structures

This paper presents a novel face recognition method based on complete Kernel Fisher discriminant (CKFD) analysis of Gabor features with power polynomial models. By integrating the Gabor wavelet representation of face images and the enhanced powerful discriminator named CKFD analysis, the method is robust to changes in illumination and facial expressions and poses. On the other hand, the extended polynomial Kernels, namely fractional power polynomial (FPP) models, are employed in CKFD analysis, which enhance face recognition performance. Comparing with existing PCA, LDA, KPCA, KFD and CKFD methods, the proposed method gives superior results in the ORL and Yale face databases. Its good performance in the two face databases gives the promising idea to solve the pose, illumination, and expression (PIE) problem of face recognition

We have demonstrated electron transport in enhancement mode in-plane-gate (IPG) quantum dot (QD) transistors. A deep etched trench allows a large positive bias on the IPG, with negligible leakage current. Such enhancement mode operation has made it possible to populate ultra-small QDs with electrons. Strong NDR peaks and SET are observed in a wide gate bias window. The position of the NDR peaks systematically moves with the change of gate bias until, and also after the SET regime is reached. The size of the QD is estimated from the SET data, giving quantum energy level spacing consistent with the evolved NDR positions.

The three natural characters of image edge are that the gray intensity distribution in neighborhood of image is ordered, directive, and structurized. Through quoting fuzzy entropy, the authors construct three information measures fuzzy entropy-based to describe the natural characters of image edge. Three component vectors for describing three natural characters of image edge are gotten via trained image samples. Firstly, a fuzzy Kohonen clustering network (FKCN) is trained with some feature vector consist of the three component vectors, and then the edge points in a new image are directly extracted by using the trained FKCN. The method does not need any threshold;more sensitive for weak edge detection;has better anti-noise performance since the influence of noise is adequately considered when the feature vector is selected.
