The paper presents the requirements of measurement system for electric arc furnace parameters measurement and for working characteristic calculating. On this basis measurement signals were specified and measurement algorithms were developed. For data acquisition a special system was constructed. The system consists of portable computer with acquisition card and conditioning system with differential amplifiers, antialiasing filters and sample and hold circuits. The system is connected with interface build-up permanent in arc furnace. The system software makes possible on-line observation of measured signals values and save data to hard disk. Further calculations may be performed off-line using special developed algorithms. For system software development the open source Python language and GCC compiler for Windows were used.

This research is an effort to model the structure and functionality of the human retina for use as an automatic identification system for logo images in document processing. Scale, rotation, noise, and distortion invariant identification is achieved using a suitable classification algorithm and a reference database. The human pulvinar is also used as a model for visual attention and logo detection within a page image. Test results show high correct identification rates, and robustness in all types of distortion. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a scheduling scheme for video streaming service in High Data Rate (HDR) downlink. It is applicable to CDMA2000 one-carrier EVolution Data Only (1xEV-DO) based on HDR technology, and can be adopted in High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) for UMTS. We consider the problem of improving the performance of existing real-time data channel-adaptive scheduling schemes for HDR downlink in the case of video streaming applications. The Modified-Largest-Weighted-Delay-First (M-LWDF) [1], [2], [3] and Exponential (EXP) [1], [4] rules were shown to achieve good results in HDR downlink in terms of Head-Of-Line (HOL) packet delays not exceeding given thresholds. To adapt the rules for video streaming service, we suggest modifying them by taking into account the impact of the video playout buffer. The objective of our scheduling scheme is to reduce the percentage of video frames, which do not meet their playback deadlines. Another important issue is to provide fairness among the users. The performance of the modified M-LWDF and EXP rules was investigated on the simulation basis. To take into account the specific nature of video streaming applications, we applied the second-order autoregressive process model for the MPEG video stream, proposed in [5]. The simulation results suggest that the modified M-LWDF and EXP rules overcome the conventional ones. © 2004 IEEE.

In this paper, a delay-independent sufficient condition for stability of linear uncertain systems with multiple delays is established. A new stability criterion is obtained based on the related theory of spectral radius and modulus matrix by the frequency domain method. The results are presented based on the assumption that system matrix A is a Hurwitz one and there is no requirement of a negative matrix measure. In comparison with the results in the literature, it is showed that the proposed method is less conservative.

In this paper, we propose a scheduling scheme for video streaming services in a high data rate (HDR) downlink. It is applicable to CDMA2000 one-carrier evolution data only (1/spl times/EV-DO) based on HDR technology, and can be adopted in high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) for UMTS. This paper presents a fast haptic rendering method providing the sense of touch from a virtual volumetric non-rigid object when a human operator interacts with the object at multiple points. Previously, we have proposed a fast volume haptic rendering method based on the shape-retaining chain linked model (or the S-chain model) that can handle the deformation of a volumetric non-rigid object and its haptic feedback in real time. One of the key differences between the S-chain model and a traditional FEM or mass-spring model is that the computation of the deformation and its reflected force is performed at a local level. When there are more than one interaction points with the object, it is necessary to consider a modeling framework that can handle human operator's all inputs together. In this paper, we propose a modeling framework in which forces generated at interaction points are vectorially summed to deal with the multiple contact points. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed method is suitable for the real-time volume haptic rendering of a volumetric non-rigid object with multiple-contact points.

Recently, a novel optimality based Repetitive control algorithm was proposed in (Hätönen et al., 2003). According to the convergence analysis carried out in that paper, the algorithm will result in asymptotic convergence for an arbitrary discrete-time LTI plant and a T -periodic reference. However, the performance of the algorithm was tested only using simulation studies. In order to rigorously test how the algorithm performs with real systems, in this paper the algorithm is implemented on a non-minimum phase spring-mass-damper system. The results are very satisfactory, because the algorithm results in near perfect tracking with this rather demanding plant type. Copyright © 2004 IFAC.

In this paper, a new model inverse optimal iterative learning control algorithm is practically implemented on an industrial gantry robot. The algorithm has only one tuning parameter which can be adjusted to provide a balance between convergence speed and robustness. Results show that the algorithm is capable of learning the required trajectory in very few iterations. However at this convergence rate the lack of robustness is a major issue. Appropriate use of the tuning parameter is shown to greatly increase the algorithm robustness as demonstrated by tests which successfully reach 600 iterations. Copyright c 2004 IFAC. This work is concerned with the stereo matching problem for real-time obstacle detection. The correspondence problem is viewed as an optimization task where the objective is to find a solution for which the matches are as compatible as possible with respect to specific constraints. The optimization process is performed by means of a genetic algorithm with a new encoding scheme. For an effective exploitation of the genetic algorithm for real-time obstacle detection, a multilevel searching strategy is proposed in order to speed-up the stereo matching process. The multilevel searching strategy consists of matching the edges at different levels by considering their gradient magnitudes. The performance of the proposed multilevel genetic stereo matching procedure is evaluated for real-time obstacle detection in front of a moving vehicle using linear stereo vision.
