Recent years have seen a rapid development in Machine Learning, which has profoundly influenced many areas of science and engineering. Among them, computer vision takes the leading place, where important tasks are image classifications powered by CNNs. Despite the great performance of CNNs in complicated scenarios, they remain sensitive to so-called adversarial attacks, and deliberate perturbations leading them to incorrect predictions. Besides more innocuous consequences, this has serious security implications for critical applications, in-cluding medical diagnostics, where misclassifications might result in disastrous outcomes. This research work discusses adversarial attacks on CNNs and other DNNs in computer vision, studying a full range of the generation and detection methods with details while discussing intrinsic vulnerability and robustness. It also proposes a learning framework that will enhance the robustness and security of DNNs and CNNs against such adversarial perils. The ultimate goal is directed to an improvement in the reliability of such models in absolutely critical scenarios for safe deployment into applications where accuracy is crucial.

A meta-reinforcement learning method for adaptive payload transportation with variations

The safe transport of cable-suspended payloads by a group of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) depends on their capacity to effectively respond to fluctuations in the dynamics caused by external variations, such as wind gusts. For group transportation with obstacles, internal variations, such as changes in formation, can also alter the space occupancy of the system related to collision detection. However, traditional adaptive learning methods are challenging to adapt to these two variations. In this paper, we present a learning-based method for collision-free dual-UAV–payload transportation in the presence of varied wind force and formation change. It consists of an adaptive trajectory tracking controller based on meta-model-based reinforcement learning with online adaptation and a novel correction policy, and a path planner that can sample collision-free goal states of the system for the controller based on the meta-collision predictor. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed trajectory tracking controller outperforms state-of-the-art model-free, model-based, and variational inference methods in terms of payload tracking error reduction and robustness when dealing with the variations mentioned above. Specifically, the proposed controller reduces the average payload tracking error to less than 0.1 metres in most tasks without obstacles. Furthermore, by following the adapted paths generated by the path planner, the trajectory tracking controller can effectively track the payload while ensuring collision-free safety of the dual-UAV–payload system during navigation among obstacles. The success rate of the proposed method is more than 80% in all scenarios with obstacles. Stability Analysis of Connected Vehicle Platoons with Markovian Packet Losses

This article focuses on discussing the effects of inter-vehicular communication on the performance of platoon control. Different from the existing results established under a critical assumption that the fading channels are independent, this paper models the inter-vehicular communication as Markovian packet loss channel which can capture the temporal interdependencies of packet losses. Our aim is to decide whether there exists a distributed controller such that the underlying vehicle platoon can achieve mean square stability (MSS) over Markovian packet loss channels. First, for the scenario with identical Markovian packet losses, we begin by deriving a necessary and sufficient condition for the platoon MSS, which is established by utilizing the stability principles of Markov jump linear systems. Additionally, we propose a numerically verifiable criterion for MSS, which can be validated through the feasibility of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Furthermore, based on the modified Riccati inequality (MRI), we provide an analytical sufficient condition that ensures MSS for vehicle platoons. This condition is expressed in terms of the information flow topology (IFT) and the statistical parameters of Markov channels. Second, for the case with nonidentical packet dropouts, we introduce a Markovian loss channel based switching (MLCBS) model. Building upon this model, we further propose a sufficient conditon related to IFT and the transition probability matrix, and a distributed controller that is not only easy to implement but also enables the achievement of MSS for vehicle platoons with nonidentical packet dropouts. Ultimately, numerical experiments are performed to validate the obtained outcomes. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper examines finite-time (F-T) observer-based control of fractional-order nonlinear systems with time delay, employing the Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy (T-SF) approach. This study utilizes the conformable fractional derivative (CFD) as its foundational framework. Sufficient conditions are formulated to guarantee that the augmented vector, consisting of the state estimates and the state estimation errors, stays within a ball centered at the origin. This applies not only to specified initial conditions but also to predefined disturbances. These conditions are then reformulated as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) conditions, which can be efficiently solved using the LMI toolbox. System Level Synthesis for Affine control Policies: Model Based and Data-Driven Settings

There is an increasing need for effective control of systems with complex dynamics, particularly through data-driven approaches. System Level Synthesis (SLS) has emerged as a powerful framework that facilitates the control of large-scale systems while accounting for model uncertainties. SLS approaches are currently limited to linear systems and time-varying linear control policies, thus limiting the class of achievable control strategies. We introduce a novel closed-loop parameterization for time-varying affine control policies, extending the SLS framework to a broader class of systems and policies. We show that the closed-loop behavior under affine policies can be equivalently characterized using past system trajectories, enabling a fully data-driven formulation. This parameterization seamlessly integrates affine policies into optimal control problems, allowing for a closed-loop formulation of general Model Predictive control (MPC) problems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to extend SLS to affine policies in both model-based and data-driven settings, enabling an equivalent formulation of MPC problems using closed-loop maps. We validate our approach through numerical experiments, demonstrating that our model-based and data-driven affine SLS formulations achieve performance on par with traditional model-based MPC. © 2025, CC BY.

EK-Net++: Real-time scene text detection with expand kernel distance and Epoch Adaptive Weight

Recently, scene text detection has received significant attention due to its wide applications. Accurate detection in complex scenes of multiple scales, orientations, and curvature remains a challenge. Component-based methods have emerged as the dominant approach for offering a more flexible way to achieve superior performance. However, Component-based methods employ the Vatti clipping algorithm for multi-instance training to handle the difficulty of arbitrary-shaped text. Yet we identify several bias results from these approaches called the "shrinked kernel" leading to decreased accuracy. Additionally, almost all text detection methods fail to consider the characteristics of different datasets and directly assign fixed loss weights to multi-instances. To address these limitations, we propose a new approach named Expand Kernel Network (EK-Net++), which presents the expand kernel distance map to compensate for the previous deficiency and incorporates three-stage regression to complete integral instance detection. Furthermore, we design the Epoch Adaptive Weight algorithm which dynamically distinguishes the characteristics of different datasets. EK-Net++ not only achieves precise positioning of arbitrary-shaped text but also strikes a balance between performance and speed. Evaluation results show that EK-Net++ attains state-of-the-art or competitive performance compared to other advanced methods, e.g., F-measure of 86.72% at 35.42 FPS on ICDAR 2015, F-measure of 85.83% at 40.13 FPS on CTW1500. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Driver drowsiness electroencephalogram (EEG) signal monitoring can promptly alert drivers of their drowsiness in edge-end Consumer Electronics (CE), thereby reducing the probability of traffic accidents. Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have shown significant advancements in processing the non-stationary, time-varying, and non-Euclidean nature of EEG signals. However, the existing single-channel EEG adjacency graph construction process lacks interpretability, which hinders the ability of GCNs to effectively extract adjacency graph features, thus affecting the performance of drowsiness monitoring. To address this issue, we propose an edge-end Lightweight Dual Graph Convolutional Network (LDGCN). Specifically, we are the first to incorporate neurophysiological knowledge to design a Baseline Drowsiness Status Adjacency Graph (BDSAG), which characterizes driver drowsiness status. Additionally, to express more features within limited EEG data, we introduce the Augmented Graph-level Module (AGM). This module captures global and local information at the graph level, ensuring that BDSAG features remain intact while enhancing effective feature expression capability. To further enhance the application of CE, we apply Adaptive Pruning Optimization (APO) to the channels and neurons of LDGCN, which nearly halves the inference latency. Experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that LDGCN offers the best trade-off between monitoring performance and hardware resource utilization, outperforming existing state-of-the-art algorithms. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a dual-beam photothermal self-mixing substance trace detection system is proposed. The crystal violet (CV) solution of the sample undergoes a thermal lens effect under the action of pump photoperiod excitation, and the refractive index changes cause the deviation of the probe beam, and the self-mixing interference (SMI) effect occurs when the modulated light returns to the cavity. By combining theoretical and experimental results, the power fluctuation of the SMI signal caused by the thermo-optic effect is linearly related to CV concentration and other parameters. At an excitation power of 24 mW, the detection limit can reach $8.0 \times {10^{- 8}}\;{\rm mol/L}$ . This method does not require labeling or complex CV pretreatment and has high sensitivity and flexibility, providing a guide for CV characterization in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical research.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents significant challenges in early detection due to its heterogeneous nature and the subtlety of neurophysiological variations. Electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as a promising tool for ASD diagnosis, offering insights into intricate neurophysiological signal dynamics. However, existing computational EEG analysis techniques often struggle to effectively capture complex ASD-related neural activity patterns. To address these limitations, this study proposes an Encoder-Ensemble Fusion Model (EEFM), designed to enhance EEG-based ASD classification through advanced neurocomputational modeling. EEFM integrates multi-domain EEG features with a sophisticated fusion network, initially extracting a diverse range of time and frequency-domain characteristics. This model enables the identification of nuanced and heterogeneous ASD-specific neural activity, leveraging ensemble learning and autoencoder architectures to uncover complex relationships within the data. Specifically, an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory)-autoencoder models temporal and spatial dependencies, followed by an XGBoost Regressor for nonlinear EEG signal interpretation and a linear regression model for decision boundary refinement. The proposed model has been evaluated on a dataset focusing on sex-specific EEG variations in ASD and Typically Developing (TD) subjects. By incorporating EEG-based neurophysiological biomarkers, EEFM achieved 93% accuracy in distinguishing ASD from TD individuals. This model enhances sensitivity to subtle ASD-related abnormalities while addressing challenges in data heterogeneity, scarcity, and generalizability, contributing to advancements in neurocomputing methodologies for EEG-based ASD diagnosis. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Acoustic feature processing strategy for leak degree identification in non-metallic pipelines

In response to the challenge of accurately identifying the degree of leaks in non-metallic pipelines, this study proposes acoustic feature processing strategy based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks (Bi-LSTM). The hydrophone sensors are deployed to collect acoustic pressure signals generated by different degrees of pipeline leak. Acoustic signal features of varying leak degrees are extracted from the perspectives of the time domain, the spectral domain, and waveform shape. Subsequently, PCA is employed to streamline and reduce the dimensionality of the extracted features. The optimal number of principal components is ascertained based on the Cumulative Variance Contribution Rate (CVCR), which eliminates redundant features and preserves principal components. Furthermore, the PCA-Bi-LSTM model is designed to identify the degree of pipeline leak. The principal components are organized chronologically into cells for input into the Bi-LSTM. Comparative analysis is performed using different statistical features and neural network architectures, with additional experiments conducted under varying pressures and leak locations to validate the generalizability of the proposed method. The results indicate that the PCA-Bi-LSTM approach achieves a leak identification accuracy of 98.6 %, which is significantly higher than the 91. 5 % accuracy of the unidirectional LSTM network and the 93.2 % accuracy of the traditional Bi-LSTM network. The results demonstrate that the designed strategy effectively improves the accuracy of identifying the degree of non-metallic pipeline leaks and demonstrates a certain level of generalizability. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
