In directional modulation (DM) networks, two practical random-subcarrier-selection (RSS) methods are proposed to transmit confidential message to the desired user per orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol with only single receive power peak formed by constructing random subcarrier set and performing a randomization procedure. This scheme completely addresses the crucial problem facing secure precise wireless transmission (SPWT), how to achieve the SPWT per OFDM symbol while the traditional SPWT holds only in the statistically average sense. Several necessary conditions for SPWT per OFDM is derived and proposed: random, distributed, and distinct subcarrier spacing pattern mapped onto transmit antenna array. Two random subcarrier index sets, quadratic subcarrier set (QSS) and prime subcarrier set (PSS), are constructed. Subsequently, a random metric is defined, and a randomization procedure (RP) is proposed. Its detailed process includes the following steps: integer mod, ordering, blocking, and block interleaving (BI) where BI is repeated until the random metric is greater than the predefined value. This yields a single high energy main peak (SHEMP) at the desired position with other positions, outside the main peak, harvesting only weak receive energy seriously corrupted by AN. Simulation results confirm that our proposed two methods, QSS plus RP and PSS plus RP, perform significantly better than conventional methods such as linear subcarrier set (LSS) plus RP. They actually form a SHEMP at desired position, and generate only extremely small leakage outside the main peak. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Free-space quantum key distribution allows two parties to share a random key with unconditional security, between ground stations, between mobile platforms, and even in satellite-ground quantum communications. Atmospheric turbulence causes fluctuations in transmittance, which further affect the quantum bit error rate and the secure key rate. Previous postselection methods to combat atmospheric turbulence require a threshold value determined after all quantum transmission. In contrast, here we propose a method where we predetermine the optimal threshold value even before quantum transmission. Therefore, the receiver can discard useless data immediately, thus greatly reducing data storage requirements and computing resources. Furthermore, our method can be applied to a variety of protocols, including, for example, not only single-photon BB84 but also asymptotic and finite-size decoy-state BB84, which can greatly increase its practicality.

A sphere-based list forwarding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) relay networks is proposed and analyzed. Firstly, an estimate forwarding(EF) method is proposed, which forwards the minimum mean squared error(MMSE) estimate of the source data to the destination. Since it performs like amplify-and-forward(AF) and decode-and-forward(DF) for the low and high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) regions, respectively, the EF relay thus outperforms conventional AF and DF across all SNRs without the need for switching algorithms for different SNRs. Because computational complexity is however high for relays with a large number of antennas(large MIMO) and/or high order constellations, list EF for large MIMO relay networks is proposed. It computes a list sphere decoder based MMSE estimate and retains the advantages of the exact EF relay at a negligible performance loss. The proposed list EF could offer a flexible trade-off between the performance and computational complexity.

The cultivation of Escherichia coli bacteria is widely used by geneticists and biopharmaceuticals to produce medicines and vaccines. In such industries, Bioprocesses are known by their harsh environment and very expensive physical sensors. This paper deals with nonlinear estimation and control of fed-batch Escherichia coli bioprocess. Enhancing the process performance and maximizing its efficiency by optimizing the control of Escherichia coli cultures depends on the availability of appropriate online sensors for the main culture components. In this study, an innovative method for nonlinear estimation and control of bioprocesses is designed and assessed. The new algorithm for control and estimation of Escherichia coli bioprocess states, based on the State-Dependent Riccati Equation technique, is validated by numerical simulation. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique for Biosystems in measuring, monitoring, and control of their natural nonlinear dynamics. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

The minimum weighted vertex cover (MWVC) problem is a well known NP-hard problem with various real-world applications. In this paper, we design an efficient algorithm named FastWVC to solve MWVC problem in massive graphs. Two strategies are proposed. One is the ConstructWVC procedure, aiming to generate a quality initial vertex cover. The other is a new exchange step for reconstructing a vertex cover. Experiments on 102 instances were conducted to confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm. The results show that the FastWVC algorithm outperforms other algorithms in terms of both solution quality and computational time in most of the instances. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Machine-Learning-based High-resolution DOA Measurement and Robust DM for Hybrid Analog-Digital Massive MIMO Transceiver

—At hybrid analog-digital (HAD) transceiver, an improved HAD rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT), called I-HAD-ESPRIT, is proposed to measure the direction of arrival (DOA) of desired user, where the phase ambiguity due to HAD structure is addressed successfully. Subsequently, a machine-learning (ML) framework is proposed to improve the precision of measuring DOA. In the training stage, the HAD transceiver works as a receiver and repeatedly measures the values of DOA via I-HAD-ESPRIT to form a slightly large training data set (TDS) of DOA. From TDS, we find that the probability density function (PDF) of DOA measurement error (DOAME) is approximated as a Gaussian distribution by the histogram method in ML. This TDS is used to learn the mean of DOA and the variance of DOAME, which are utilized to infer their values and improve their precisions in the real-time stage. The HAD transceiver rapidly measures the real-time value of DOA some times to form a relatively small real-time set (RTS), which is used to learn the real-time mean and variance of DOA/ DOAME. Then, three weight combiners are proposed to combine the-maximum-likelihood-learning outputs of TDS and RTS. Their weight factors depend intimately on the numbers of elements in TDS and RTS, and signal-to-noise ratios during the two stages. Using the mean and variance of DOA/DOAME, their PDFs can be given directly, and we propose a robust beamformer for directional modulation (DM) transmitter with HAD by fully exploiting the PDF of DOA/DOAME, especially a robust analog beamformer on RF chain. Simulation results show that: 1) The proposed I-HAD-ESPRIT can achieve the HAD CRLB;2) The proposed ML framework performs much better than the corresponding real-time one without training stage, 3) The proposed robust DM transmitter can perform better than the corresponding nonrobust ones in terms of bit error rate and secrecy rate. Modeling the Impact of DVFS on Performance of Applications in Datacenter

Datacenters are built to house massive internet services at an affordable price. Both Op-ex (long-time operational expenditure) and Cap-ex (one-time construction costs) are directly impacted by datacenter power consumption. Thus, DVFS (dynamic voltage and frequency scaling) is widely adopted to improve per node energy efficiency. However, it is well known but has not yet been fully explored that such schemes affect an application's power consumption and performance simultaneously. This paper focuses on the impact of DVFS on performance of an application and proposes an analytical model to quantitatively characterize the relationship between an application's performance and a processor's frequency, which can be leveraged to predict the performance of an application at any frequency. Specifically, according to different memory subsystem resources accessed, instructions of an application are divided into two parts: on-chip instructions and off-chip instructions, which can be modeled independently. On-Chip instructions refer to instructions which only access on-chip resources, and their execution time is frequency-relevant and can be modeled using a linear function. Off-chip instructions stand for instructions accessing the main memory, and their execution time is dominated by memory access latency and is frequency-irrelevant. By the division and modeling of the two parts, a quantitative model can be obtained between the execution time of an application and frequency of a processor. Evaluations using two different platforms and all benchmarks of SPEC 2006 show that the derived models are very precise, with average prediction error less than 1.34%. © Copyright 2017, Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of sciences.
