Accurate pitch extraction from speech is important but challenging problem for speech synthesis. However, the additive nature and long-term suprasegmental property of pitch features have not been fully exploited in most of the existing pitch estimators as they are operated frame by frame. As a result, they would cause some inherent discontinuities, such as double/half F0 errors and unvoiced/voiced(U/V) error. This would adversely affect the quality of synthetic speech as well as the expressiveness of the prosody information. In this paper, we explore the novel use of multi-tasks(Task 1: U/V;Task 2: Pitch) bidirectional long short-term memory recurrent neural network(BLSTM) to model the pitch and voicing decision simultaneously in a unified framework. The features used in this study are extracted from the frequency domain. We compute the log-frequency power spectrogram and then normalize to the long-term speech spectrum to attenuate noises. A filter is then used to enhance the harmonicity. Experiments show that the proposed approach substantially outperforms RAPT, which behaves the best in clean condition. Besides, our proposed approach can even work well with a certain level of background noise.

Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which urgently call for highly reliable and effective communication technologies for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) applications. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is widely believed to be the most promising candidate among these applications. However, the orthogonality of subcarriers in OFDM can be easily destroyed by the Doppler-induced inter-carrier interference (ICI), which is very common in V2X channels. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme which integrates the ICI self-cancellation technique into the index modulated (IM-) OFDM framework. Via careful designs, the proposed scheme can not only inherit the advantages of IM-OFDM but also suppress the ICI from active subcarriers. Simulations validate that in V2X channels, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms existing IM-OFDM and more importantly shows better performance than the conventional OFDM with ICI self-cancellation without sacrificing the spectral efficiency.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is prone to frequency offset which gives rise to intercarrier interference (ICI). Recently, a novel OFDM transmission scheme called OFDM with index modulation (IM-OFDM) is proposed, which outperforms conventional OFDM in the absence of frequency offset. As in IM-OFDM, partial subcarriers are set to be idle by spatial modulation, the potential of IM-OFDM in ICI reduction is expected. In this paper, we find that this potential vanishes in some real scenarios with ICI, which leads to IM-OFDM exhibiting even worse performance than conventional OFDM. To improve this situation, a novel ICI cancellation scheme is designed, which integrates the ICI self-cancellation technique into the IM-OFDM framework. Via careful designs, the proposed scheme not only provides a solution to ICI problems of IM-OFDM, but also achieves an attractive tradeoff between the spectral efficiency and ICI cancellation performance of the system. Simulations validate that in the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO), the proposed scheme significantly outperforms existing IM-OFDM and more importantly shows better performance than the conventional OFDM with ICI self-cancellation.

Active Disturbance Rejection control (ADRC) as a standalone motion solution has been adopted by companies such as Texas Instruments and Danfoss and made available on various proprietary industrial platforms. The idea of ADRC, however, can be integrated with the existing control technologies seamlessly, as shown in this paper. It is shown a modularized ADRC design for set-point tracking of motion control such that better uncertainty rejection can be implemented without any change in the existing proportional-derivative (PD) control with linear observer. We prove that certain integration of the observer's error can serve as an estimation for the “total disturbance” in low frequency range. This enables the estimation and cancellation of the “total disturbance” to be incorporated into the existing control loop. Also, a comparison between the methods with and without such “module” is discussed. The proposed ADRC is implemented and validated with experimental results for a 1-degree of freedom robotic manipulator, where desired set-point tracking performance in position control is achieved under unknown mass variations and sudden external disturbances.

Radiative cooling of the thermally isolated system is investigated in KAGRA gravitational wave telescope. KAGRA is a laser interferometer-based detector and main mirrors constituting optical cavities are cool down to 20K to reduce noises caused by the thermal fluctuation. The mirror is suspended with the multi-stage pendulum to isolate any vibration. Therefore, this mirror suspension system has few heat links to reduce vibration injection. Thus, this system is mainly cooled down with thermal radiation. In order to understand the process of radiative cooling of the mirror, we analyzed cooling curve based on mass and specific heat. As a result, it was newly found that a cryogenic part called 'cryogenic duct-shield' seems to have large contribution in the beginning of the mirror cooling. This finding will help to design new cooling system for the next generation cryogenic gravitational wave detector.

This paper proposes a novel four-switch three-phase brushless dc motor control scheme based on quasi Z-source network (QZFSTP), which improves the utility ratio of DC voltage, extends the range of speed and increases the output torque. The additionally partial circuits of quasi Z-source network and the bridge arm of four-switch inverter constitute the quasi Z-source converter. During the operation of motor, shoot-through states are inserted. Then the input voltage of inverter increases and the performance of motor can be markedly improved. The operating principle of four-switch three-phase (FSTP) brushless dc motor are analyzed, and the new topology and its controlling method are illustrated in detail. The experimental result indicated that the novel circuit structure could solve above problems effectively.

The state estimation problem for hidden Markov models subject to event-based sensor measurement updates is considered in this work, using the change of probability approach. We assume the measurement updates are transmitted through wired or wireless communication networks. For the scenarios with reliable and unreliable communication channels, analytical expressions for the probability distributions of the states conditioned on all the past point- and set-valued measurement information are obtained. Also, we show that the scenario with a lossy channel, but without the event-trigger, can be treated as a special case of the reliable channel results. Based on these results, closed-form expressions for the estimated communication rates under the original probability measure are presented, which are shown to be the ratio between a weighted 1-norm and the 1-norm of the unnormalized conditional probability distributions of the states under the new probability measures constructed. Implementation issues are discussed, and the effectiveness of the results is illustrated by numerical examples and comparative simulations. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Social computing, as the technical foundation of future computational smart societies, has the potential to improve the effectiveness of opensource big data usage, systematically integrate a variety of elements including time, human, resources, scenarios, and organizations in the current cyber-physical-social world, and establish a novel social structure with fair information, equal rights, and a flat configuration. Meanwhile, considering the big modeling gap between the model world and the physical world, the concept of parallel intelligence is introduced. With the help of software-defined everything, parallel intelligence bridges the big modeling gap by means of constructing artificial systems where computational experiments can be implemented to verify social policies, economic strategies, and even military operations. Artificial systems play the role of ＂social laboratories＂ in which decisions are computed before they are executed in our physical society. Afterwards, decisions with the expected outputs are executed in parallel in both the artificial and physical systems to interactively sense, compute, evaluate and adjust system behaviors in real-time, leading system behaviors in the physical system converging to those proven to be optimal in the artificial ones. Thus, the smart guidance and management for our society can be achieved.

Imaging and manipulating objects down to the molecular level plays a crucial role in many disciplines. It allows to unravel molecular phenomena, to form materials with new chemical and physical properties, or to build objects on an atomic scale. Science on the nanoscale is inherently interdisciplinary. It requires knowledge and insight into many fields, spanning from modeling, measuring, imaging, actuation to control. Often feedback control facilitates operation with molecular precision, despite the fact that many physical phenomena at the molecular level are still not well understood, and that stochastic and nonlinear effects are inherently present. This work provides an insight into some of the current control related research activities on a molecular scale. This is done considering examples from different fields: control related to scanning probe microscopy such as atomic force microscopy, controlled self assembly on a molecular scale, control aspects of molecular transport, and the use of control for manipulation of single molecules using macroscopic probe tips. The hope is that control related researchers, who are not experts in these fields, become aware of the opportunities present, which could also drive new theoretical developments.

A NSGA-II with alternating direction method of multipliers mutation for solving multiobjective robust principal component analysis problem

Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA), which is a popular parsimony model, is becoming increasingly important for researchers to do data analysis and prediction. The RPCA formulation is made of two components: sparse penalty and low rank penalty. These two competing terms are balanced with one parameter, which is essential for the effectiveness of RPCA. However, in real-world applications, the lack of data adaptive methods for choosing the right parameter hinders the popularization of RPCA. In this work, RPCA is generalized to a multiobjective optimization problem without any balancing parameter. The new model is named as Multiobjective Robust Principal Component Analysis (MRPCA). We aim to solve MRPCA via Evolutionary Algorithm. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first attempt to use evolutionary algorithm to solve RPCA problem, which is a high dimensional convex optimization problem. Specifically, one of the popular evolutionary algorithm, NSGA-II, is tested on MRPCA problem. The curse of dimensionality is observed when the dimension of MRPCA problem increases. To handle this dimensionality problem, we introduce a novel mutation, termed as Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers mutation (ADMM mutation), that works well in high dimensional decision space. Numerical experiments show that this modified NSGA-II, which converges much faster than the standard one, can deal with the curse of dimensionality well. Furthermore, numerical image reconstruction test confirms that the reconstruction performance of our modified NSGA-II is better than the traditional proximal algorithm, which is usually used to solve RPCA problem.
