Adaptive observer for nonlinear fractional-order systems

In this paper, an adaptive observer is proposed for the joint estimation of states and parameters of a fractional nonlinear system with external perturbations. The convergence of the proposed observer is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) by using an indirect Lyapunov *** proposed adaptive observer is also robust against Lipschitz additive nonlinear uncertainty. The performance of the observer is illustrated through some examples including the chaotic Lorenz and Lü's systems. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Models of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum properties, such as entanglement, may exhibit entirely different behavior to purely classical systems. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph and coworkers [T C Ralph, G J Milburn, and T Downes, Phys. Rev. A, 79(2):22121, 2009;T C Ralph and J Pienaar, New Journal of Physics, 16(8):85008, 2014], a bipartite entangled system could decohere if each particle traversed through a different gravitational field gradient. We propose to study this effect in a ground to space uplink scenario. We extend the above theoretical predictions of Ralph and coworkers and discuss the scientific consequences of detecting/failing to detect the predicted gravitational decoherence. We present a detailed mission design of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Space QUEST (Space - Quantum Entanglement Space Test) mission, and study the feasibility of the mission scheme. Higher Order Sliding Mode control of Uncertain Robot Manipulators

This paper proposes a higher order sliding mode controller for uncertain robot manipulators. The motivation for using high order sliding mode mainly relies on its appreciable features, such as high precision and elimination of chattering in addition to assure the same performance of conventional sliding mode like robustness. Instead of a regular control input, the derivative of the control input is used in the proposed control law. The discontinuity in the controller is made to act on the time derivative of the control input. The actual control signal obtained by integrating the derivative control signal is smooth and chattering free. The stability and the robustness of the proposed controller can be easily verified by using the classical Lyapunov criterion. The proposed controller is tested to a three-degree-of-freedom robot to prove its effectiveness.

With the fast development of mobile devices and great concern on health surveillance, it is becoming increasingly popular to collect, analyze, and interpret people's health-related data by using intelligent mobile devices in their daily life. Oxygen saturation is an important physiological parameter referring to the concentration of oxygen in the blood, and prolonged low oxygen levels may lead to respiratory or cardiac arrest. Previous oxygen saturation detection methods require infrared light, however most of the off-the-shelf mobile devices lack such infrared light transmitter and receiver modules. This paper presents a novel oxygen saturation estimation method emplying a RGB camera and visible light in most of mobile devices. By applying of traditional optical oxygen saturation estimation model to mobile devices, and analyzing its problem for those devices, this study proposes a new oxygen saturation estimation model on intelligent mobile devices and offers an approach to solve the baseline drift problem in mobile cameras. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its potentials in many oxygen saturation based researches such as daily-activity based healthcare with mobile devices. © Copyright 2015, Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of sciences. This paper proposes a simple, non-iterative way of calculating low-complexity controlled contractive sets, and shows how such set can be used for controller design for systems with state and input constraints. The result is a low complexity controller, suitable for implementation in embedded control systems with modest computational power and available memory. © IFAC.

This paper investigates the problem of stabilization of time delay linear singular systems subject to actuator saturation. A polytopic approach is used to describe the saturation behavior. By using an augmented Lyaponuv-Krasovskii functional and adopting the delay partitioning technique, less conservative sufficient conditions are established to ensure the closed loop system to be locally admissible based on a state feedback controller. In this paper, all the conditions are transformed into minimization problem involving LMI conditions by adopting the idea of the cone complementarity algorithm. A numerical example illustrates the effectiveness of the design.

This paper designs an adaptive sliding mode dynamic controller for the trajectory tracking of wheeled mobile robot. First, a kinematic controller is introduced for the wheeled mobile robot. Then, the adaptive sliding mode dynamic controller (ASMDC) is proposed to make the real velocity of the wheeled mobile robot reach the desired velocity command, in presence of system uncertainties and disturbances. The convergence of the complete equations of motion of wheeled mobile robot is proved by the Lyapunov stability theory. computer simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Human flesh search(HFS), a Web-enabled crowdsourcing phenomenon, originated in China a decade ago. In this article, we present the first comprehensive empirical analysis of HFS, focusing on the scope of HFS activities, the patterns of HFS crowd collaboration process, and the characteristics of HFS participant networks. A survey of HFS participants was conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the HFS community and various factors that motivate these participants to contribute. This article also advocates a new stream of Web science and social computing research that will be important in predicting the future growth and use of the World Wide Web.

Application servers (AS) of virtualized platform may suffer from software aging problem. In this paper, we first formulate the system model including three virtual machines. Two of them act as the main servers, and the third machine acts as the backup node. The motivation of our formulated model is that the relationship between the service provider and the service maintainer is collaborative as well as having different goals between them, the service provider as a leader wants to maximize his system availability, while the service maintainer wants to minimize his maintenance cost. Thus, the problem of maximizing availability and minimizing cost between the service provider and service maintainer is Stackelberg game based. Next, we assume that the AS degradation is caused by resource consumption due to memory leaks for the AS on the active VMs, and we present the system degradation states based on Markov renewal processes. We give the analytical definitions of threshold levels for R alert at each VM, which are used to determine the optimal rejuvenation schedules. In addition, we obtain the steady-state availability expressions for the system and the mean maintenance cost. Finally, we give the Stackelberg strategy with the open-loop information and the solutions for the game theory by a numerical illustration.

In this paper, we investigate fundamental limits for physical implementations of the Kalman-Bucy filter for state estimation of a class of linear port-Hamiltonian systems. In particular, for the studied class of systems we show the Kalman-Bucy filter itself is a port-Hamiltonian systems and by invoking the second law of thermodynamics, we can characterize the external power supply needed to generate an optimal state estimate. We also show how the required external power supply can be decreased by allowing the filter to perturb the measured system to a larger extent. Hence, it is possible to decrease the so-called back action of the filter by spending more energy. We illustrate our results using passive electric circuits. © 2014 IEEE.
