Technical developments in neurobiology have reached a point where the acquisition of high resolution images representing individual neurons and synapses becomes possible. For this, the brain tissue samples are sliced using a diamond knife and imaged with electron-microscopy (EM). However, the technique achieves a low resolution in the cutting direction, due to limitations of the mechanical process, making a direct visualization of a dataset difficult. We aim to increase the depth resolution of the volume by adding new image slices interpolated from the existing ones, without requiring modifications to the EM image-capturing method. As classical interpolation methods do not provide satisfactory results on this type of data, the current paper proposes a re-framing of the problem in terms of motion volumes, considering the depth axis as a temporal axis. An optical flow method is adapted to estimate the motion vectors of pixels in the EM images, and this information is used to compute and insert multiple new images at certain depths in the volume. We evaluate the visualization results in comparison with interpolation methods currently used on EM data, transforming the highly anisotropic original dataset into a dataset with a larger depth resolution. The interpolation based on optical flow better reveals neurite structures with realistic undistorted shapes, and helps to easier map neuronal connections. © 2011 ACM.

We report planar integration of tapered Terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with spoof surface plasmon (SSP) structures. The SSP structure consists of one plasmonic coupler and periodically arranged scatters. The resulting surface-emitting THz beam is highly collimated with a beam divergence as narrow as 3.6°×9.7°. As the beam divergence is inverse proportional to the light emission area, this low divergence indicates a good waveguiding property of the SSP structure, while the low optical background of the beam implies a high coupling efficiency of the THz wave from the laser cavity to the SSPs. Since all the structures are in-plane, this scheme provides a promising platform where the well-established SP techniques can be employed to engineer the THz QCL beam with high flexibilities. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

There are many types of bio-signals with various control application prospects. In this work possible control application domain of electroencephalographic signal obtained from an easily available, inexpensive EEG headset - Emotiv EPOC was presented. This work also involved application of an embedded system platform. That solution caused limits in choosing an appropriate signal processing method, as embedded platforms characterise with a little efficiency and low computing power. Potential implementation of the embedded platform enables to extend the possible future application of the proposed BCI. It also gives more flexibility, as the platform is able to simulate various environments. In this work traditional, statistical methods were neither used nor described. © 2013 IEEE.

Serum was obtained from 25 male renal cell carcinoma(RCC) patients and 21 healthy males.O-glycans were released by a-elimination reaction and purified by graphitized carbon cartridge solid phase extraction,then profiled by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight mass *** noise removal and peak alignment,1372 peaks were extracted from 200000 data *** peaks were analyzed by calculation of differential sensitivity and *** combination of two feature peaks was chosen as a biomarker and could clearly differentiate RCC and normal samples in our study group.

This communication deals with the explicit scheme of robust self-tuning regulation of a class of stochastic systems, which can be described by the input-output Auto-Regressive Auto-Regressive Moving Average with exogenous (ARARMAX) mathematical model with unknown and time-varying parameters in presence of unmodelled dynamics. This explicit regulation scheme is based on the proposed modified filtering recursive least squares algorithm with dead zone (m-F-RLS) in the step of estimation. Numerical simulation results of the developed explicit schemes of minimum variance self-tuning regulator, which are applied to the climate control in building, are given.

This paper deals with the trajectory tracking control problem of nonholonomic wheeled mobile robot, in the presence of external disturbances and parameters uncertainties. The computed torque controller may be used to make convergence of WMR on desired trajectory. Due to the weak of performance against external disturbances, a sliding mode controller is presented. The stability of the controllers is proven by utilizing the Lyapunov stability theory.

This paper deals with the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic energy system. It includes photovoltaic array panel, DC/DC converter, and load. The operating point for photovoltaic energy system depends on climatic parameters and load. For each temperature and irradiation pair, there exists only one optimal operating point which corresponds to the maximum power transmitted to the load. The photovoltaic energy system is described by nonlinear equations. It is transformed into an augmented system which is described with a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The proposed MPPT algorithm which permits transfering the maximum power from the panel to the load is based on Parallel Distributed Compensation method (PDC). The control parameters have been computed based on Linear Matrix Inequalities tools (LMI). The Lyapunov approach has been used to prove the stability of the system. Some reliable simulation results are provided to check the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

A terminal state equality constraint for Model Predictive control (MPC) laws is investigated, where the terminal state/input pair is not fixed a priori but it is a free variable in the optimization. The approach, named "generalized" terminal state constraint, can be used for both tracking MPC (i.e. when the objective is to track a given steady state) and economic MPC (i.e. when the objective is to minimize a cost function which does not necessarily attains its minimum at a steady state). It is shown that the proposed technique provides, in general, a larger feasibility set with respect to the existing approaches, given the same prediction horizon. Moreover, a new receding horizon strategy is introduced, exploiting the generalized terminal state constraint. Under mild assumptions, the new strategy is guaranteed to converge in finite time, with arbitrarily good accuracy, to an MPC law with an optimally-chosen terminal state constraint, while still enjoying a larger feasibility set. The features of the new technique are illustrated by an inverted pendulum example in both the tracking and the economic contexts. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with the problem of stabilization of continuous-time Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy systems which are controlled through networks. Network-induced delays, data packet dropouts, and measurement quantization are simultaneously considered for Network signal-transmission. Based on the LyapunovKrasovskii functional approach and a parallel distributed compensation scheme, a delay-dependent stabilization approach is developed for the NCSs, which guarantees that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable. Finally, an illustrative example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design technique.
