This paper addresses the problem of regulating a discrete-time linear uncertain and time-varying system to the origin. It is shown that, based on an interpolation technique, by minimizing an appropriate objective function, how feasibility and a robustly and asymptotically stable closed-loop behavior can be achieved. It is shown that the control is a piecewise affine and continuous function of the state. Several simulations demonstrate the performance of our results.

In this paper a new concept of set invariance, called D-invariance, is introduced for dynamical systems described by delay difference equations. We will be interested in the definition and computation of such invariant sets in a specified bounded region of the state-space. The Minkowski algebra will be used to define mappings over the set of compact sets in direct relationship with the invariance of time-delay systems. Set-iterates based on these mappings can be used for the construction of a non-decreasing sequence of D-invariant sets.

Ramp metering is an effective tool for traffic management on freeway networks. In this paper, we apply iterative learning control (ILC) to address ramp metering in a macroscopic-level freeway environment. By formulating the original ramp metering problem as an output regulating and disturbance rejection problem, ILC has been applied to control the traffic response. The learning mechanism is further combined with Asservissement Linéaire d'Entrée Autoroutière (ALINEA) in a complementary manner to achieve the desired control performance. The ILC-based ramp metering strategy and the modified modularized ramp metering approach based on ILC and ALINEA in the presence of input constraints are also analyzed to highlight the advantages and the robustness of the proposed methods. Extensive simulations are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Based on the ideal solution approximation, the model for size-dependent melting temperature of pure metal nanoparticles is extended to binary alloy systems. The developed model, free of any adjustable parameter, demonstrates that the melting temperature is related to the size and composition of alloy nanoparticles. The melting temperature of CuNi, PbBi and Snln binary alloy nanocrystals is found to be consistent with the experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The research reveals that alloy nanocrystals have similar melting nature as pure metal.

In this paper, the modules for the conceptual design of an innovative e-learning platform using satellite communications for teaching control systems theory courses are presented. All necessary tools and mechanisms are provided enabling real time text, and audio/video based communication between tutors and learners. The end-user driven services include: virtual classroom, offline operation, sharing of applications, private/ public chatting, audio/video streaming. A concise description of the pilot architecture which depends on the DVB-RCS standard is presented justifying further the choice of the proposed platform. Simulation results concerning the teaching of fundamental issues in Networked control Theory within the proposed architecture are provided. Connections with hybrid configurations such as wireless terrestrial broad-band technologies (DVB-RCS/WiMAX, DVB-RCS/Wi-Fi) are further justified.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems may suffer from both carrier frequency offset (CFO) and in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance at the receiver front end. In this paper, a novel type of intercarrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation method using mirror mapping is proposed to combat these impairment. Based on the proposed novel method and by adopting two widely used mapping operations, we altogether derive two different mirror mapping schemes. Analysis and simulation results verify that the proposed mirror mapping schemes not only inherit the efficiency of the existing self-cancellation schemes in suppressing ICI caused by CFO but also have the ability of compressing or even eliminating IQ imbalance.

Incremental Sheet Forming is an advanced manufacturing technology in the recent years. In a lot of cases the process requires the synchronized cooperation of two machines. The complex operation was modelled in a virtual environment, where the cyber objects were deeply connected with the real objects. The result of this virtual cooperation resulted some cognitive observation that is also published in this paper.

A detailed account of all necessary tools and mechanisms is presented enabling real time text, and audio/video based communication between tutors and learners. In addition a concise description of the pilot network architecture depending on the DVB-RCS standard is presented justifying further the choice of the communications platform. Simulation results concerning the teaching of fundamental issues in Networked control Theory within the proposed architecture are provided. Connections with hybrid configurations such as wireless terrestrial broadband technologies (DVB-RCS/ WiMAX, DVB-RCS/Wi-Fi) are further analyzed and justified. Finally some conclusive anticipated directions related to the future of modern control courses education in connection with state of art technological advances are explored.

The spatial uncertainties of tip positioning due to the nonlinearity of the PZT scanner and thermal drift hinder the further application of the AFM based nanomanipulation. This paper brings forward feature referenced tip localization enhanced by probability motion model to reduce the spatial uncertainties. An improved motion model is probabilistically built by incorporating the PI model, the creep model and the thermal drift model. For calibrating the accurate model parameters, the statistical experiments are designed and performed. Then the tip position is optimally estimated by combining with a local scan based feature sensing method. The simulation and corresponding experiments are performed to illustrate the validity and feasibility of the calibrated parameters and the algorithm.
