A number of robust stability problems take the following form: A polynomial has real coefficients wvhich are multiaffine in real parameters that are confined to a box in parameter space. An efficient method is required for checking the stability of this set of polynomials. We present two sufficient conditions in this paper. They involve: checking certain properties at the corners and edges of the parameter space box.

In this paper, two theorems are quoted which, when applied together, provide much information about the robustness of adaptive control schemes. From these two theorems, another theorem is developed which can explain why adaptive controllers can perform robustly in certain practical situations, while possibly failing in other situations. In particular, if the bandwidth constraints on a control systems are lenient enough to allow the use of a sampling frequency which is smaller than the frequency at which unstructured uncertainty becomes significant, an adaptive controller can behave robustly. Many, if not all, of the applications of adaptive control which have been successful employ relatively slow sampling of the process. Thus, the results of this paper provide a theoretical explanation of how certain adaptive controllers are performing robustly in practice. In addition, the final theorem is of a form which provides insight into what a priori knowledge is required to achieve robust adaptive control and how this knowledge say be used.

In this paper the behaviour of 2-D discrete systems which contain a finite number of memoryless nonlinearitics is considered. Sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of limit cycles are derived using a frequency domain approach analogous to that used in [1]. The conditions derived are shown to be more general than those already given in [1] and [5]. Also presented are the extensions to the higher dimensional case as well as a simplified check of that condition. An algebraic test, which guaranties the nonoccurence of overflow oscillations in a discrete system in the state space, is formulated based on the results of [7] and on the properties of quasidominant matrices. Finally, the quantization error due to the finite word length of a first order 2-D digital filter is considered and formulae for the amplitude bounds and mean square are given.

We present an algorithm for solving singular value inequalities over a continuum of frequencies. The algorithm is in two parts: a master algorithm which constructs an infinite sequence of finite sets of inequalities and a nondifferentiable optimization subalgorithm which solves these finite sets of inequalities.

This paper shows how the design of feedback controllers for nonlinear systems may be formulated as an optimization problem with infinite dimensional constraints for which known algorithms may be employed. An important aspect is a method for reducing the time interval, required to insure stability, to a finite value.

The design problem of choosing a set of parameters so that inequality constraints are satisfied for a specified variation of parameter values about their nominal value, is considered. Such problems occur when systems must be synthesized from components whose values are only known to a certain tolerance. Simple algorithms exist for such problems when the constraints are convex. This paper presents an algorithm which is valid for the non-convex case, The algorithm utilizes concepts employed by Eaves and Zangwill in their generalized cutting plane algorithms.

This paper collects a number of scattered results on the solution of both finite and infinite systems of inequalities into a unified whole. In particular, it presents two methods which solve finite systems of inequalities in a finite number of iterations and which use outer approximations techniques for infinite systems of inequalities.

Research of discrete event systems is strongly motivated by applications in flex ible manufacturing, in traffic control and in concurrent and real-time software verification and design, just to mention a few important areas. Discrete event system theory is a promising and dynamically developing area of both control theory and computer science. Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the automatic design of controllers from formal specifications of logical requirements. This re search owes much to the pioneering work of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham at the beginning of the eighties. The second group deals with the analysis and op timization of system throughput, waiting time, and other performance measures for discrete event systems. The present book contains selected papers presented at the Joint Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES'92) held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on Au gust 26-28, 1992 and organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Au tomation of the Czechoslovak Academy of sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, by the automaticcontrollaboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of technology (ETH) , Zurich, Switzerland, and by the Department of Computing Science of the University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.
