Audio represents one of the most appealing yet least exploited modalities in wireless sensor networks, due to the potentially extremely large data volumes and limited wireless capacity. Therefore, how to effectively collect audio sensing information remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a new paradigm of audio information collection based on the concept of audio-on-demand. We consider a sink-free environment targeting for disaster management, where audio chunks are stored inside the network for retrieval. The difficulty is to guarantee a high search success rate without infrastructure support. To solve the problem, we design a novel replication algorithm that deploys an optimal number of O(n) replicas across the sensor network. We prove the optimality of the energy consumption of the algorithm, and use real testbed experiments and extensive simulations to evaluate the performance and efficiency of our design. The experimental results show that our design can provide satisfactory quality of audio-on-demand service with short startup latency and slight playback jitter. Extensive simulation results show that this design achieves a search success rate of 98% while reducing the search energy consumption by an order of magnitude compared with existing schemes. © 2012 IEEE.

Bibliographical information of scientific papers is of great value since the Science Citation Index is introduced to measure research impact. Most scientific documents available on the web are unstructured or semi-structured, and the automatic reference metadata extraction process becomes an important task. This paper describes a framework for automatic reference metadata extraction from scientific papers. Our system can extract title, author, journal, volume, year, and page from scientific papers in PDF. We utilize a document metadata knowledge base to guide the reference metadata extraction process. The experiment results show that our system achieves a high accuracy.

In grid environment, applications are in active competition with unknown background workloads introduced by other users. To achieve good performance, performance models are used to predict the possible status of the resources, and to make decisions of the selection of a performance-efficient application execution strategy. In this paper, we present a scheduling decision method that utilizes the NARX neural network based load prediction to define data mappings appropriate for dynamic resources. This method uses the information of the predicted CPU load interval and variance of future resource capabilities to obtain the CPU load decision, which can be used to guide the scheduling decision. As to the predictor used here, the NARX neural network based predictor learns the model of the system from the external input information and the system itself. It inherits the mapping capability of feed forward networks and, at the same time, captures the dynamic features of load information. In this work, our predictor shows good performance for time series prediction.

Exploits sequencing is a typical way by which an attacker breaks into a network. In such a scenario, each exploit lays as an atomic proposition for subsequent exploits. An attack path is seen as a succession of exploits which take an attacker right to his/her final goal. The set of all possible attack paths form an attack graph. Researchers have proposed a multitude of techniques to generate attack graph which grows exponentially in the size of the network. Hence it is preferable to optimize the choice of solutions which avoid the cost of scalability and cumbersome. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive approach to network vulnerability analysis by ranking access Petri net graph and utilizing a penetration tester's perspective of maximal level of access possible on a host. Our approach has the following benefits: it provides a simple model in which an analyst can work, its algorithmic complexity is polynomial in the size of the network, and has the ability of scaling well to large size networks. Nevertheless, it has some drawback as in place of all possible attack paths, we seek only good attack paths. An analyst may make suboptimal choices when repairing the network.

Due to great advances in computing and Internet technologies, organizations have been enabled to collect and generate a large amount of data. Most of these organizations tend to analyze their data to discover new patterns. Usually, analyzing such amount of data requires huge computational power and storage facilities that may not be available to these organizations. Cloud computing offers the best way to solve this problem. Storing the private data of different organizations in the same cloud server enhances the mining process, but at the same time, raises privacy concerns. Therefore, it is highly recommended to support privacy preserving data mining algorithms in the cloud environment. This paper introduces an efficient and accurate cryptography-based scheme for mining the cloud data in a secure way without loss of accuracy. Specifically, we address the problem of K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classification over horizontally distributed databases without revealing any unnecessary information. We have utilized the recently developed cryptography primitive, order preserving symmetric encryption (OPSE), to integrate securely the local classifications at a lower cost than the previously presented privacy preserving data mining schemes. Empirical results on real datasets demonstrate that the proposed scheme has similar performance with the naive mining systems in terms of classification accuracy.

Automated trust negotiation (ATN) is an important means to establish trust between strangers through the exchange of digital credentials and mobile access control policies specifying what combinations of credentials a stranger must submit. While ATN provides a good mechanism to share resources in the open and distributed environments, there still exist some pitfalls. A notable problem is that the negotiation process is easy to be interrupted, which leads the negotiation to failure. Thereto, current protection techniques are somehow complex and heavyweight, which greatly limits ATN's applications. To solve these problems, an Email Based ATN Model (EBAM) is proposed. A credential template and an access control policy template are specified to carry information. All the transmitted messages are encrypted by private keys. The data exchange is realized through the negotiators' emails. A use case is given to show how it works, which proves the model sound and reasonable.

As image processing has been widely used in many scientific research areas, how to find a powerful and inexpensive approach to solve large-scale image processing problems poses great challenges. In this paper, based on workflow theory and Web service technology, we present a novel image processing framework called ImageFlow, which enables images to be processed by distributed legacy software coupled with interconnected target systems. The salient features of ImageFlow are: (1) Workflow based image processing; (2) General running service (GRS) for legacy programs; (3) Adaptive data transfer mechanism with SOAP attachment and GridFTP; and (4) Workflow based software deployment. The experimental results show that our approaches are feasible and efficient. SOAP attachment over HTTP is more preferable for transferring small size of data, while GridFTP performs better when transferring large-scale data. In addition, compared with the sequential deployment model, workflow based software deployment can gain higher speedup when constructing large-scale systems.

A series of problems arises with the emergence and fast development of grid. Among all the problems, one of them is how to smoothly connect heterogeneous grid platforms. There are a number of ways to solve this problem and the relatively more efficient one is using ontology. Based on this method, we focus on alleviating semantic inconsistency of various platforms and designing a novel ontology. This ontology is depicted by resource description framework (RDF) and transacted by adapters. Finally, we test our method and analyze its performance.

Efficient search for unstructured peer-to-peer information retrieval systems is a challenging problem. This paper proposes a semantic overlay based on the small world phenomenon that facilitates efficient search for information retrieval in unstructured P2P systems. In the semantic overlay, each node maintains a number of short-range links which are semantically similar to the node, together with a small collection of long-range links that help increase recall rate of information retrieval as well as reduce network traffic. In this paper we present how to construct and maintain a semantic small world overly, and the search strategy utilizing the above semantic overlay. Experimental results show that our model can improve performance by 150% compared to Gnutella and by up to 50% compared to the Interest-based model, a similar shortcut-based search technique

JPEG-Compatibility Steganalysis that Distinguishes Embedding Changes from Recompression Artifacts

JPEG-Compatibility steganalysis detects the presence of secret message embedded in the JPEG decompressed images and estimates the embedding rate. We propose a JPEG-Compatibility steganalysis algorithm that estimates the embedding rate based on the difference between the stego image and its recompression based predicted co-vet image. In particular, compression artifacts and embedding changes are distinguished based on the amplitude of pixel value changes. This is done independent of the embedding positions, thus is effective for both content non-adaptive and content adaptive steganography. In addition, we also improve the recompression prediction scheme to more accurately estimate the JPEG quantization table. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is significantly more effective in detecting spatial ±1 steganography across a wide range of quality factors and embedding rates, when compared to the previous works.
