Policy gradient methods are one of the most successful methods for solving challenging reinforcement learning problems. However, despite their empirical successes, many SOTA policy gradient algorithms for discounted problems deviate from the theoretical policy gradient theorem due to the existence of a distribution mismatch. In this work, we analyze the impact of this mismatch on the policy gradient methods. Specifically, we first show that in the case of tabular parameterizations, the methods under the mismatch remain globally optimal. Then, we extend this analysis to more general parameterizations by leveraging the theory of biased stochastic gradient descent. Our findings offer new insights into the robustness of policy gradient methods as well as the gap between theoretical foundations and practical implementations. © 2025, CC BY.

Spatial audio is an important component of the metaverse. With the rapid increase of the spatial resolution and the number of objects, the data volume of the spatial side information has grown larger. However, the low bit rate transmission of spatial side information in the object-based audio coding methods leads to the low-quality reconstruction of spatial side information with limited bandwidth. To address this issue, this paper constructs a cascade design of spatial audio coding and unequal error protection (UEP) rateless codes. Furthermore, the further protection of specific spatial side information is proposed for different scenarios, which effectively addresses the limitation of traditional spatial audio coding in side information protection. For the situation where the code length K of different importance levels is different, we propose an adaptive degree distribution (ADD), adding K to the selection probability as an influencing factor, which has better performance than other degree distribution for short code length. ADD is used to replace the multiple degree distribution strategy of the traditional unequal error protection scheme, and the block error rate (BER) is reduced nearly 10 times compared with the traditional scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

In order to effectively utilize the wind energy, the max power point tracking (MPPT) control method has been extensively used in the wind power system. The MPPT control in the wind power system is actually to control the power electronic converters connected with the wind turbine. However, due to the existing of the power switching devices, the converters were the typical nonlinear system. The traditional linearization modeling methods of the converters cannot represent the working process of the system accurately and the control strategies based on the linearization model of the converters only guarantee the satisfactory performance of system near the predefined working point. They were not suitable to the wind power MPPT system, which has the variable wind speeds and the variable max power points. This paper proposes a power switching control method based on a novel power switched model of the wind power MPPT system with Boost converter. The main contributions of the work are: (1) The proposed power switched model realizes the accurate description of the converter working process, which directly focus on the power states of the wind power system. (2) The proposed switching control method realizes the direct power switching control of the converter of the wind power MPPT system. The merits of the proposed method are simple control structure, no control parameter, no pulse width modulation block and strong robustness under circuit parameters uncertainty. The simulation results verify the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed methods. © 2022 IEEE.

The robots have been used in the inspection of industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs), that includes data collection and wireless charging. The sensor nodes are always densely deployed and their appearances are similar, thus it is a non-trivial challenge to identify a specific node by the machine vision. To solve this problem, we propose to use the proximity estimation algorithm, which uses wireless signals to estimate neighbor nodes, to help the robot to identify a specific node in the network. The algorithm is deployed a patrol inspection testbed with a mobile robot and multiple sensor nodes, and the experiments are executed to verify its performance. The experimental results show that the proximity estimation algorithm is a reasonable solution to identify similar nodes in the inspection of the IWSN. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The motion primitive-based state lattice trajectory planning method has been widely used in the field of trajectory planning. However, due to the limitations of the search space and resolution of motion primitives, and the lack of consideration of scenario information during offline generation of motion primitives, the tractor-Trailer vehicles can easily fall into "jackknife phenomenon"when making large pose adjustments in narrow scenarios, which brings dilemma for trajectory planning. In this paper, a trajectory planning algorithm is proposed based on a general model of tractor-Trailer vehicle, which combines global planning and local optimization. The method first generates a series of motion primitives, including forward and backward driving conditions, and then an A based global state lattice planner is used to obtain a planning result, which is imported as the initial solution into the local trajectory optimizer based on PI2-CMA (Path Integral Policy Improvement with Covariance Matrix Adaptation) algorithm and dynamic potential method. Experiments show that this method significantly improves the performance in the obstacle avoidance, "jackknife phenomenon"avoidance and curvature compared to traditional motion primitive-based state lattice planning methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Today, the world economy is in the stage of rapid development, followed by the rising quantity, the decreasing moisture content, and the increasing heat value of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Since waste incineration has the advantages of excellent volume reduction effect, high resource utilization efficiency, and less secondary pollution to the environment, waste incineration disposal technology has received extensive attention worldwide. With the continuous increase of the urban population, the amount of sewage sludge is growing year by year. The process of the sludge incineration system is highly complicated, and the cost of construction and operation is high. The waste incinerator can process not only MSW but also sewage sludge. Therefore, the co-incineration of sewage sludge with MSW in the existing waste incinerator is a safe and effective way to dispose of sewage sludge. In this paper, the simulation results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are analyzed for medium-scale and large-scale waste incinerators, characterized by high moisture content, high ash content, low heat value of sewage sludge, and incomplete combustion and high pollutant emissions in waste incinerators. With FLIC-Fluent coupled simulation method, the critical information such as temperature field, velocity field, concentration field of principal components, and the pollutant emissions can be predicted. Based on the CFD simulation results, the performance and structure of waste incinerators can be optimized, and the new products can be designed and developed. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Generic object detection has made great progress in recent years, yet small object detection is still facing a serious problem of missed detection. The problem is caused by two reasons: low resolution in small targets and feature loss during deep convolution downsampling. Some previous studies used feature pyramid structures and multi-scale training predictions to alleviate this problem, but still cannot efficiently utilise the feature information of small targets. In this paper, firstly we propose a novel and effective feature enhancement module to extract more features;secondly, a filter size design method is presented to extract features of matching objects and incorporate context information;finally, an adaptive fusion method is used to process outputs of our module and improve model robustness. We select YOLOv3 as base model and carry out several experiments on a special Small Object Dataset and the results show that our work can achieve an increase of about seven percentage points (35.73%) compared to 28.78% on baseline. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel online-learning enabled hierarchical operation framework for a green-hydrogen microgrid (MG) with a high penetration of renewable energy (RE) and hybrid energy storage. The operation framework features a bi-level multi-timescale structure which integrates a day-ahead optimal scheduling with online learning distributionally robust model predictive control (OL-DRMPC). Day-ahead scheduling optimization is employed at the high level to provide MG energy dispatch references, while the OL-DRMPC is carried out in the low level for reference-tracking under uncertainties incurred by RE and load forecast errors. To confront the imperfect knowledge of forecast-error distributions, distributionally robust conditional value-at-risk constraints are imposed on MG system states, namely the storage of battery and hydrogen, for a family of distributions called ambiguity set. By exploiting a Dirichlet process mixture model, a streaming-data-driven ambiguity set for uncertain parameters is devised over the runtime of controller and flexibly captures multimodal structure and fine-grained moment information of each mixture component. Enabled by online learning, the proposed strategy enjoys the merit of offering a reliable and intelligent MG operation. Case studies are used to demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority. © 2022 IEEE.

The hydrogen gas turbine can be the key technology for carbon-neutral in the future. The flexibility of gas turbine under various operation conditions is an important issue. A state-space model of hydrogen gas turbine with different hydrogen volume ratio mixed fuel is constructed based on Rowen model, and a full-dimensional state observer is designed to obtain the states of state-space model. The model predictive control method based on amplitude decaying aggregation strategy is presented to stabilize the rotational speed of hydrogen gas turbine under various constraints, which are to ensure the safety of operation. The number of variables contained in the optimization problem to be solved online is reduced by aggregation strategy. The simulation results confirmed that the presented method works well, and the effects of the hydrogen volume ratio for the performance of hydrogen gas turbine are discussed. © 2022 IEEE.

Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) provides important insights into the metabolic mechanisms of different biological processes. Although PPIs in some organisms have been investigated systematically, PPIs in the ocean archaea remain largely unexplored. But such species have special investigation value since their adaptation to extreme living conditions may generate unique PPIs. In this paper, we aim to characterize and predict PPIs in ocean archaea to advance understanding of their metabolic networks. First, we collect all ocean archaea PPIs with high confidence from STRING database and analyze the PPI network features, including centrality and enrichment analysis. The functional enrichment results of the largest connecting subgraph in the PPI network show most PPIs in our constructed dataset is related to the translation and transcription processes. Then, we generate an equal number of negative PPI pairs, whose members have either different subcellular locations or GO terms. We also use the generated dataset to test the performance of three pretraining methods and their ensemble methods in the binary PPI prediction task. Our results suggest the ensemble methods could be applied to further improve models’ performance. Fine-tuned models trained on the ocean archaea dataset are expected to predict the other ocean archaea PPIs that are not included in the STRING database and get more understanding about the ocean archaea PPI universe.
