Pushing AI to wireless network edge: an overview on integrated sensing, communication, and computation towards 6G

Pushing artificial intelligence(AI) from central cloud to network edge has reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the vision of artificial intelligence of things(AIoT) in the sixth-generation(6G) era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence, which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the vast amount of data scattered at the wireless network edge. Typically, realizing edge intelligence corresponds to the processes of sensing, communication,and computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and processing, ***, conventional wireless networks design the three mentioned ingredients separately in a task-agnostic manner, which leads to difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI applications like auto-driving and metaverse. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of seamlessly integrated sensing, communication, and computation(ISCC) in a taskoriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in downstream AI tasks. In view of its growing interest, this study provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the state-of-the-art advancements, and shedding light on the road ahead.

Event extraction (EE) aims to detect event triggers and extract their corresponding arguments. In more realistic situations, events often come in a more complicated way in which multiple events may appear simultaneously and arguments may have overlaps in a sentence. For languages without delimiters like Chinese, most existing EE models are token-level and thus may have difficulties in solving multi-event or overlapping problems. What's more, they are prone to overlook the word-level or span-level features and the rich interactions between triggers and arguments. To tackle these problems, we propose a span-based model for multiple and overlapped EE with trigger-argument interaction enhanced span representations. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms other mainstream baselines on the DuEE dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have emerged as highly effective strategies in the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases. mRNA design, a key to the success of mRNA vaccines, in-volves finding optimal codons and increasing secondary structure stability to lengthen mRNA half-life, ultimately enhancing protein expression. Despite receiving widespread attention, most methods primarily rely on manual design, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive. While optimization approaches can alleviate this issue, existing methods still exhibit critical limitations caused by conflicts between codon usage and mRNA structural stability, compounded by the vast design space of mRNA resulting from the presence of synonymous codons. In this paper, a novel multi-objective evolutionary optimization-based mRNA design method is proposed. We first formulate the mRNA design problem as a multi-objective optimization problem and then develop an Elite Archive-Assisted Multi-Objective Evolutionary algorithm for mRNA Design, namely EAA-MOED, by incorporating a novel elite archive-assisted method into a weighted optimization framework to improve search efficiency. Experimental studies, involving two state-of-the-art mRNA design methods and five well-known MOEAs, show the competitiveness of the proposed EAA-MOED in mRNA design. © 2024 IEEE.

Since the widespread transmission of viruses, especially the outbreak of COVID-19, the identification of the source has become a crucial research direction. Due to the inability to acquire the states of all nodes and the significant cost of obtaining the state of each node in large networks, utilizing a limited number of sensors to monitor the entire network has become an important research focus. Previous methods simply fused observation results in various ways, while a recent model ESL based on expert support scores was proposed to enhance the model flexibility and improve the computational process. However, this method only improved the calculation process as it deploys the sensors randomly without effective information acquisition process. Therefore, we chose a sensor deployment method suitable for evidence theory and combined it with evidence theory to further enhance the accuracy and transferability of source localization using evidence theory. The results have been confirmed with real network data, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach. © 2024 IEEE.

To achieve the purpose of large-scale visual tracking of targets based on Visual Sensor Networks (VSNs), this paper proposes a sensor placement optimization method to provide a suitable sensor configuration that satisfies the requirements of maximal network coverage and minimal reconstruction error as closely as possible. In the proposed method, some necessary models are established as the mathematical basis of the optimization process. Then, a multi-objective optimization function is designed to balance the coverage and reconstruction error, followed by an intelligent optimization algorithm that combines the advantages of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). Additionally, a dimensionality reduction technique is used to represent the sensor location information using a one-dimensional forward distance, which makes the search process simpler and increases execution speed. Finally, comprehensive comparison experiments are carried out in various settings to show the reliability and effectiveness of the optimization algorithms. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Mining top-k frequent patterns is an important operation on graphs, which is defined as finding k interesting subgraphs with the highest frequency. Most existing work assumes a static graph. However, graphs are dynamic in nature, which is described as streaming graphs. Mining top-k frequent patterns in streaming graphs is challenging due to the streaming nature of the input and the exponential time complexity of the problem. A naive solution is to calculate approximations of the frequent patterns in the streaming graph and then find the top-k answers, which is a memory- and time-consuming method. In this paper, we design a novel auxiliary data structure, FPC, to detect valid subgraph patterns and their frequency in real-time. We first convert each newly produced subgraph into a sequence and then map it into corresponding tracks in FPC based on hash functions. We theoretically prove that FPC can provide unbiased estimation and then give an error bound of our algorithm. In addition, we propose a vertical hashing and candidate buckets sampling technique to further improve FPC with higher space utilization and higher accuracy. Extensive experiments confirm that our approach generates high-quality results compared to the baseline method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Many complex problems encountered in both production and daily life can be conceptualized as combinatorial optimization problems (COPs). Many ad-hoc deep learning methods have been proposed to solve these problems, but there still lacks an effective unified framework. In this work, we take a step towards this goal by designing an unified end-to-end deep reinforcement learning framework named CONQUER. CONQUER first translates various COPs into the unified QUBO (Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization) formalization, and afterwards trains a neural QUBO solver to search high-quality strategies, which are then checked and repaired to obtain the solutions for original COPs. The QUBO solver is a purely data-driven neural model, which does not rely on any expert inputs. We adopt the graph transformer network to represent the QUBO graph, so as to effectively capture the features of problem objective and constraints. The Deep Q-network is utilized to train the QUBO solver to find long-sighted solution strategies. Despite being trained solely on small synthetic graphs, CONQUER exhibits promising generality on much larger instances, and can be easily adapted to real-world datasets. Experimentally, we show that CONQUER achieves the state-of-the-art performances on four COPs over graphs, including minimum vertex cover, maximum independent set, maximum clique and maximum cut problem.

The applications of mobile communication and automatic driving-related technologies in transportation have made a revolution for us in traffic information perception, vehicle cooperative control, and traffic management. Besides, the emergence and development of connected vehicles (CV) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) have gradually changed the traditional traffic flow into a mixed one. In order to investigate their influences and characteristics of mixed traffic flows, this paper constructs an analysis model to derive the linear stability condition of the mixed traffic flow with CV and CAV based on the simplified desired safety margin (SDSM) model. Several numerical experiments are conducted to analyze the string stability of homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic flow, respectively. The results reveal that the presence of CAV could contribute to improving the string stability as well as reducing rear-end crashes. The higher the penetration rate of CAV, the more stable the string. And the time delay in drivers and communications is not conducive to the string stability. Besides, it is also found that controllable vehicles show great potential in preventing shockwave formation and propagation, suggesting a new way in traffic flow management. © ASCE.
