The metaheuristic genetic algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm which means that it will always evolve to get an optimum solution. Due to this intrinsic characteristic, the conventional genetic algorithm might be trapped at local optimum when dealing with a global optimization problem that consists of several maximum points. As such, this paper aims to explore the potential of improving the genetic algorithm by manipulating its operators. With different procedures in selection and replacement operators, the genetic algorithm is be able to compute more efficiently. This mechanism is introduced to prevent the proposed algorithm to be trapped at the local optimum point with shorter computation time. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is tested in optimizing a wireless sensor network (WSN) because the WSN will exhibit multiple peaks with different network configuration. The existence of multiple peaks will lead to additional difficulties for the conventional routing protocol algorithm in tracking the global optimum network configuration or known as global optima. The simulation results show the effect of proposed genetic algorithm with different combinations of operators. © 2019 IEEE.

This work aims to explore the potential to minimize traffic congestion using a non-deterministic algorithm. Conventionally, the deterministic algorithm such as fuzzy logic was proposed as the computational algorithm to compute the optimum traffic signal timing for minimizing vehicles in queue and travel delay. However, it is very difficult to define the suitable number of fuzzy rules that are able to cover the all possibilities of traffic flow changes since the natural traffic flow behavior is dynamic. Besides, the inherent deterministic behavior limits the algorithm to explore the solution space in searching for the optimum traffic solution. In other words, the deterministic algorithm will not provide other solution with the same input. Therefore, genetic algorithm, a non-deterministic algorithm, is proposed to optimize the traffic signalization. A benchmarked 3×3 grid traffic network is developed as the testbed to examine the robustness of the proposed GA. Each intersection is integrated with a GA based signal controller or known as agent to form a multi-agent system. Each agent has the autonomy in controlling their own traffic intersection and they will share their local traffic information to their downstream intersections. The performance of the proposed GA is compared with the conventional fuzzy logic. The simulation results show the proposed GA improves the performance about 6.6 % in minimizing vehicles in queue and travel delay as compared to the conventional fuzzy logic. © 2019 IEEE.

In recent years, statistical evidence has identified melanoma as a major cause of skin cancer deaths. In this study, we propose a skin analysis lesions based on colour features (C) and Hu (H) moments to differentiate benign (nevi) and malignant (melanoma) lesions and, a classification based on Random Forest algorithm. Colour features are found as follows. Pre-processing for hair removing using the Dull-razor method; image segmentation based on the optimal colour threshold set on each RGB colour channel (red, green, blue); 23 colour features extraction using the minimum and maximum RGB intensity and Hu moments; Random Forest (RF) algorithm to accurately differentiate benign and malignant skin lesions. This study used three datasets: 7-Point, Med-Node, PH2. RF classifier performance in terms of accuracy was: 94% for the 7-point dataset with H5, H7, H6, H2, C08 selected as relevant features; 98.1% for the Med-Node dataset and H7, H5, H6, H2, H1 ACC the relevant features; and, 96.5% for the PH2 dataset and H5, H6, H7, C03, H1 selected as relevant features, respectively. Shape features based on Hu moments are found to improve the classification performance of the skin lesions compared to the colour features.

In this work, we study a Lotka–Volterra system with delay. We carry out an analytical study from which there emerge three equilibrium points. In the absence of delay, two of these points are unstable whatever the choice of the parameters of the system, and the other one is stable according to the chosen parameters. With delay, and looking only at the point of positive coexistence, we find that it can cause not only instability, oscillations and switching stabilities, but also chaos. In addition, the analytical study revealed the phenomenon of switch stability, thus increasing the zones of instability. Time traces, phase portraits and bifurcation diagram obtained by numerical simulations complement the analytical investigations. Finally, we propose an electronic circuit with delay whose simulation presents the different phenomena observed numerically, thus validating this new electronic circuit with complex dynamics. © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Oxy-fuel combustion is a promising technology for the merits of energy-saving and NOx emission reduction and has been gradually promoted to the application of metallurgical heating furnaces. For the purpose of understanding and optimizing the heating process of the industrial furnace, with a particular focus on the effect of fuel types and oxy-fuel combustion, a comprehensive transient 3D CFD model was built for the simulation of the complicated in-furnace thermochemical states and the gas-solid heat transfer at multi-scales. It was observed that under constant calorific heat input conditions, the fuel composition appears to have little influence on the internal thermal state and the slab heating. Meanwhile, oxy-fuel combustion enhances the in-furnace heat radiation intensity, leading to higher average gas and thus higher slab temperatures. However, the in-furnace thermal distribution becomes uneven and the slab internal temperature difference increases. Under the prerequisite that the slab temperature leaving the furnace is between 1373-1573 K and the maximum internal temperature difference is less than 50 K/m, the production efficiency can be increased by 6.25% when oxy-fuel combustion is applied, with the corresponding slab residence time decreases from 7424s to 6960s. © 2024, The Authors. The commercialization of perovskite solar cells is hindered by the poor long-term stability of the metal halide perovskite (MHP) light absorbing layer. Solution processing, the common fabrication method for MHPs, produces polycrystalline films with a wide variety of defects, such as point defects, surfaces, and grain boundaries. Although the optoelectronic effects of such defects have been widely studied, the evaluation of their impact on the long-term stability remains challenging. In particular, an understanding of the dynamics of degradation reactions at the atomistic scale is lacking. In this work, using reactive force field (ReaxFF) molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects of defects, in the forms of surfaces, surface defects and grain boundaries, on the stability of the inorganic halide perovskite CsPbI3. Our simulations establish a stability trend for a variety of surfaces, which correlates well with the occurrence of these surfaces in experiments. We find that a perovskite surface degrades by progressively changing the local geometry of PbIx octahedra from corner-to edge- to face-sharing. Importantly, we find that Pb dangling bonds and the lack of steric hindrance of I species are two crucial factors that induce degradation reactions. Finally, we show that the stability of these surfaces can be modulated by adjusting their atomistic details, either by creating additional point defects or merging them to form grain boundaries. While in general additional defects, particularly when clustered, have a negative impact on the material stability, some grain boundaries have a stabilizing effect, primarily because of the additional steric hindrance. Abstract: Sun tracking systems are often used to improve the performance of crystalline silicon photovoltaic plants. However, their power consumption still remains a challenge till date. In this paper, a low power consumption sun tracking system has been implemented for driving a crystalline silicon photovoltaic module under variable weather conditions. The experimental results showed that this sun follower consumes less than 1% of the increased energy. Taking into account the tracker consumption, the energy gain can attain up to 25% under the same weather conditions compared to a fixed photovoltaic system. In addition to that, results gotten from data-based simulations are coherent with experimental results. © 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.

Utilizing hot carriers is the crucial approach for solar cell to exceed the thermodynamic detailed balance limit, yet effective extraction of hot carriers in absorber materials via most commonly used semiconductor acceptors has been a challenge in both materials and photophysics research for many years. Herein, we build series of CsPbI3 quantum dot and fullerene derivative systems to explore the decisive factors of this process and have for the first time realized efficient hot carrier extraction in these systems (maximum extraction efficiency ~ 84%). We find building the systems as state-coupled complexes creates new carrier transport channels at about 0.22 eV above CsPbI3 quantum dot bandgap, which facilitates highly efficient HC extraction. Our research directly visualizes the inner connection of molecule interaction and ultrafast hot carrier extraction. The knowledge and strategy gained here are of universal meaning, taking an important step forward true hot carrier photovoltaics. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This research presents dynamic approaches for swarm robotics system and subsequently achieve enhanced strategies to enhance equilibrium and optimize power usage. Method apply in progress of the project can be divided into hardware platform, control and optimization, and lastly measurement and analysis method. In hardware platform, the speed of rotation of the wheel is controlled for various movement such as direct motion and rotation in place. Optimization method is focused on ant colony optimization. The corrected equation for robot localization control provides more precise mathematical model for manipulating the robot motion. This research compared ACO, dynamic ACO and Dijkstra algorithm in simulated static condition. The result shows that Standard ACO outperforms others algorithm in static condition while Improved algorithm is best used in dynamic conditions. © 2019 IEEE.

Digital Twins have recently emerged as a major new area of innovation. Digital Twins are often found at the core of “smart” solutions that have also emerged as major areas of innovation. Modeling and simulation (M&S) approaches create a model of a real-world system that is linked to data sources and is used to simulate and predict the behavior of its real-world counterpart. On the face of it Digital Twins and M&S appear to be similar, if not the same. Is this actually the case? Are the two fields really separate or is Digital Twin research re-inventing the “M&S wheel”? To investigate these relationships, in this panel we will explore some contemporary innovations with Digital Twins and discuss whether or not Digital Twins is a contemporary “refresh” or “rebranding” of M&S or if there are exciting new synergies.
