One of the risk factors in skin cancer is unprotected exposure to UV radiation. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but also curable if it is diagnosed in the early stages. This study uses a histogram analysis technique to investigate and classify two common skin lesions, nevi and melanoma. The colour feature investigated is the optimal threshold values in RGB space. Also, a boundary limit of the skin lesions is performed using a colour histogram analysis and the optimal threshold determination. A statistical analysis of the relevant threshold values for R, G and B histograms to establish a sound colour separation between benign and malignant lesions is performed. Monochromatic channel threshold values are clustered using K-means and the validity of clustering is assessed by silhouette method. The proposed method technique is evaluated using 120 colour digital images (60 melanomas and 60 nevi) from the Digital Archive of the Department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG)1. The reported results suggest red as the lesion representative colour in dermoscopic images. The pixel values for red channel are strongly related to the skin lesion type. © SGEM 2019.

MRI images contain a lot of subtle information related to various lesions which are difficult to be picked up by radiologists. Computer aided diagnosis CAD is a valuable tool to improve the ability of an average radiologist to diagnose the subtle lesions. This study uses the isolated foreground pixels in MRI images as a feature able to discern a stroke patient by a healthy one. Brain MRI image was divided into eight equal sectors. The isolated foreground pixels (i.e. pixels satisfying a neighborhood configuration that corresponds to an isolated foreground pixel) were extracted using hit-or-miss and skeleton transformations. We have tested the proposed algorithms using two cerebral image datasets (healthy and acute stroke patients). The mean SD values of isolated foreground pixels for stroke patients systematically exceed the corresponding values for healthy patients. The higher numbers of isolated foreground pixel determined using hit-or-miss transform indicate this method as a promising approach for a simple and quick evaluation of stroke. © SGEM 2019.

The demagnetization factor for randomly packed spheroidal particles

We investigate if the demagnetization factor for a randomly packed powder of magnetic spheroidal particles depend on the shape of the spheroidal particles and what the internal variation in magnetization is within such a powder. A spheroid is an ellipsoid of revolution, i.e. an ellipsoid with two semi-major axis being equal. The demagnetization factor is calculated as function of particle aspect ratio using two independent numerical models for several different packings, and assuming a relative permeability of 2. The calculated demagnetization factor is shown to depend on particle aspect ratio, not because of direct magnetic interaction but because the particle packing depend on the aspect ratio of the particles. The relative standard deviation of the magnetization across the powder was 3%-8%, increasing as the particle shape deviates from spherical, while the relative standard deviation within each particle was relatively constant around 5%. This paper presents a metaheuristic-based temperature controller for an exothermic batch process. Developing a suitable temperature controller for an exothermic process is a challenging task because large amount of heat is released rapidly during the process. The exothermic behavior will further increase the reaction rate and cause more heat to be liberated. As the result, the improper temperature control might cause the reaction becomes unstable and consequently poses safety concern to the plant personnel and equipment. The conventional non-metaheuristic-based controller, such as fuzzy logic requires empirical data or knowledge about the total amount heat released while developing its fuzzy rules and membership functions for precision control. However, the detailed kinetic model of the heat released is unable to be obtained since there are several unobservable parameters during the process, such as the energy held in the reactor and jacket walls. Therefore, particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is proposed as the controller to maintain the reactor temperature at the desired trajectory by manipulating the inlet jacket fluid temperature and flow rate. The simulation results show the proposed PSO produces better performances in terms of minimizing fluctuation in control actions and overshooting as compared with the conventional fuzzy logic controller.

Lung cancer is the main cause of death in the world. It is diagnosed generally by analysing a tissue cluster formation called `nodule' inside the lung. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) plays an important role in medical field which helps radiologists to detect and localise lung nodule. The aim of this research is to develop an image segmentation algorithm for nodule detection in computed tomography (CT) image. Performance of the developed segmentation algorithm is analysed through testing on the lung CT image obtained from public online database, Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC). To segment the lung nodule, preprocessing techniques are applied on the CT image followed by segmentation approaches to segment the nodule inside the lung. In this research, median filter is applied to improve the quality and filter the background noise of the image. Segmentation technique which is level set method (LSM) is applied to segment the nodule. After that, feature extraction process is carried out to obtain the essential information of the segmented nodules for further analysis or classification purpose. Here, the features extracted including centroid, major and minor axis length and area of the nodule. Performance of the segmentation algorithms is analysed using 20 lung CT images from LIDC dataset. Lastly, classification step is done using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify the segmented nodule to different categories. From the analysis, LSM technique performs better in cases of bigger nodule compared to smaller size nodule. The result shows that the proposed segmentation method can effectively segment the lung nodule.

The metaheuristic genetic algorithm is an evolutionary algorithm which means that it will always evolve to get an optimum solution. Due to this intrinsic characteristic, the conventional genetic algorithm might be trapped at local optimum when dealing with a global optimization problem that consists of several maximum points. As such, this paper aims to explore the potential of improving the genetic algorithm by manipulating its operators. With different procedures in selection and replacement operators, the genetic algorithm is be able to compute more efficiently. This mechanism is introduced to prevent the proposed algorithm to be trapped at the local optimum point with shorter computation time. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is tested in optimizing a wireless sensor network (WSN) because the WSN will exhibit multiple peaks with different network configuration. The existence of multiple peaks will lead to additional difficulties for the conventional routing protocol algorithm in tracking the global optimum network configuration or known as global optima. The simulation results show the effect of proposed genetic algorithm with different combinations of operators.

We have studied the electronic structures, ferromagnetic properties, half-metallicity and exchange splitting in BaO doped with titanium such as Ba1-xTixO at concentration x = 0.125. The structural parameters of BaO and Ba0.875Ti0.125O compounds are calculated with generalised gradient approximation of Wu and Cohen, while their electronic structures, accurate band gaps and magnetic properties are evaluated by the use of the Tran-Blaha-modified Becke-Johnson potential. The changes of lattice parameter and bulk modulus of Ba0.875Ti0.125O are discussed with respect to the BaO. We have found that the Ba0.875Ti0.125O has a wide half-metallic ferromagnetic gap of 2.701 eV and a half-metallic gap of 0.803 eV with integral Bohr magneton of 2 μB, where its ferromagnetic state is characterised by the main contribution of the direct exchange splitting. Therefore, the Ba0.875Ti0.125O is true half-metallic ferromagnet with spin polarisation of 100 % and appears to be promising material for spintronics applications. © 2020, CC BY.

Chaotic dynamics of piezoelectric MEMS based on maximal Lyapunov exponent and Smaller Alignment Index computations

We characterize the dynamical states of a piezoelectric microelectromechanical system (MEMS) using several numerical quantifiers including the maximal Lyapunov exponent, the Poincaré Surface of Section and a chaos detection method called the Smaller Alignment Index (SALI). The analysis makes use of the MEMS Hamiltonian. We start our study by considering the case of a conservative piezoelectric MEMS model and describe the behavior of some representative phase space orbits of the system. We show that the dynamics of the piezoelectric MEMS becomes considerably more complex as the natural frequency of the system's mechanical part *** refers to the reduction of the stiffness of the piezoelectric transducer. Then, taking into account the effects of damping and time dependent forces on the piezoelectric MEMS, we derive the corresponding non-autonomous Hamiltonian and investigate its dynamical behavior. We find that the non-conservative system exhibits a rich dynamics, which is strongly inuenced by the values of the parameters that govern the piezoelectric MEMS energy gain and loss.
