Distributed coordination algorithms (DCA) carry out information processing processes among a group of networked agents without centralized information fusion. Though it is well known that DCA characterized by an SIA (stochastic, indecomposable, aperiodic) matrix generate consensus asymptotically via synchronous iterations, the dynamics of DCA with asynchronous iterations have not been studied extensively, especially when viewed as stochastic processes. This paper aims to show that for any given irreducible stochastic matrix, even non-SIA, the corresponding DCA lead to consensus successfully via random asynchronous iterations under a wide range of conditions on the transition probability. Particularly, the transition probability is neither required to be independent and identically distributed, nor characterized by a Markov chain. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Complex resource allocation systems provide the fundamental support for the normal functioning and well being of the modern society. Computationally and mathematically, such systems can be modeled as minority games. A ubiquitous dynamical phenomenon is the spontaneous emergence of herding, where a vast majority of the users concentrate on a small number of resources. From an operational point of view, herding is of grave concern as the few overused resources can be depleted quickly, directing users to the next few resources and causing them to fail, and so on, and eventually leading to a catastrophic collapse of the whole system in short time. To devise strategies to prevent herding from occurring is thus of interest. Previous works focused on control strategies that rely on external interventions, such as pinning control where a fraction of users are forced to choose a certain action. Is it possible to eliminate herding without any external control? The main point of this paper is to provide an affirmative answer through exploiting artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, we demonstrate that, when agents are empowered with reinforced learning (e.g., the popular Q-learning in AI) in that they get familiar with the unknown game environment gradually and attempt to deliver the optimal actions to maximize the payoff, herding can effectively be eliminated. Furthermore, computations reveal the striking phenomenon that, regardless of the initial state, the system evolves persistently and relentlessly toward the optimal state in which all resources are used efficiently. However, the evolution process is not without interruptions: there are large fluctuations that occur but only intermittently in time. The statistical distribution of the time between two successive fluctuating events is found to depend on the parity of the evolution, i.e., whether the number of time steps in between is odd or even. The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, Computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

I/O is becoming one of major performance bottlenecks in NAND-flash-based mobile devices. Novel nonvolatile memories (NVMs), such as phase change memory and spin-transfer torque random access memory, can provide fast read/write operations. In this paper, we propose a unified NVM/flash architecture to improve the I/O performance. A transparent scheme, virtualized flash (vFlash), is also proposed to manage the unified architecture. Within vFlash, interapp and intra-app techniques are proposed to optimize the application performance by exploiting the historical locality and I/O access patterns of applications. Since vFlash is on the bottom of the I/O stack, the application features will be lost. Therefore, we also propose a cross-layer technique to transfer the application information from the application layer to the vFlash layer. The proposed scheme is evaluated based on an Android platform, and the experimental results show that the proposed scheme can effectively improve the I/O performance of mobile devices. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Quality has great effect on acceptance and behaviour of software products under operation. Quality has many perspectives for users, engineers and managers. These perspectives are represented formally in a quality model that is composed of both external and internal measures. External quality attributes can be measured indirectly using internal properties of the software product. Many external attributes are of interest to manager of software production and are combined in a framework or a quality model. However, these attributes may have interrelationships, positive or negative (conflicts). In addition, external quality attributes may have relationships with bugs in a component or system. In this research, we aim to find empirical evidence of the interrelationships among six quality attributes (reusability, flexibility, understandability, functionality, extendibility and effectiveness) and with bugs. We also demonstrate the evolution of these quality attributes in consecutive releases. Eleven open-source systems and their evolutions are considered to study the research objectives. The results could not show a relationship between the quality attributes and bugs in systems. The evolution of systems is consistent with the evolution in quality, i.e., quality increases in consecutive releases. There are some positive and low negative relationships among the quality attributes. © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

This paper summarises the results of the Sclera Segmentation and Eye Recognition Benchmarking Competition (SSERBC 2017). It was organised in the context of the International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2017). The aim of this competition was to record the recent developments in sclera segmentation and eye recognition in the visible spectrum (using iris, sclera and peri-ocular, and their fusion), and also to gain the attention of researchers on this subject. In this regard, we have used the Multi-Angle Sclera Dataset (MASD version 1). It is comprised of2624 images taken from both the eyes of 82 identities. Therefore, it consists of images of 164 (82×2) eyes. A manual segmentation mask of these images was created to baseline both tasks. Precision and recall based statistical measures were employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the segmentation and the ranks of the segmentation task. Recognition accuracy measure has been employed to measure the recognition task. Manually segmented sclera, iris and peri-ocular regions were used in the recognition task. Sixteen teams registered for the competition, and among them, six teams submitted their algorithms or systems for the segmentation task and two of them submitted their recognition algorithm or systems. The results produced by these algorithms or systems reflect current developments in the literature of sclera segmentation and eye recognition, employing cutting edge techniques. The MASD version 1 dataset with some of the ground truth will be freely available for research purposes. The success of the competition also demonstrates the recent interests of researchers from academia as well as industry on this subject. © 2017 IEEE.

We consider the symbolic controller synthesis approach to enforce safety specifications on perturbed, nonlinear control systems. In general, in each state of the system several control values might be applicable to enforce the safety requirement and in the implementation one has the burden of picking a particular control value out of possibly many. We present a class of implementation strategies to obtain a controller with certain performance guarantees. This class includes two existing implementation strategies from the literature, based on discounted payoff and mean-payoff games. We unify both approaches by using games characterized by a single discount factor determining the implementation. We evaluate different implementations from our class experimentally on two case studies. We show that the choice of the discount factor has a significant influence on the average long-term costs, and the best performance guarantee for the symbolic model does not result in the best implementation. Comparing the optimal choice of the discount factor here with the previously proposed values, the costs differ by a factor of up to 50. Our approach therefore yields a method to choose systematically a good implementation for safety controllers with quantitative objectives. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The WSDM Cup 2017 Triple scoring challenge is aimed at calculating and assigning relevance scores for triples from type-like relations. Such scores are a fundamental ingredient for ranking results in entity search. In this paper, we propose a method that uses neural embedding techniques to accurately calculate an entity score for a triple based on its nearest neighbor. We strive to develop a new latent semantic model with a deep structure that captures the semantic and syntactic relations between words. Our method has been ranked among the top performers with accuracy - 0.74, average score difference - 1.74, and average Kendall's Tau - 0.35. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The reduced density matrices of a many-body quantum system form a convex set, whose three-dimensional projection is convex in R3. The boundary of may exhibit nontrivial geometry, in particular ruled surfaces. Two physical mechanisms are known for the origins of ruled surfaces： symmetry breaking and gapless. In this work, we study the emergence of ruled surfaces for systems with local Hamiltonians in infinite spatial dimension, where the reduced density matrices are known to be separable as a consequence of the quantum de Finetti＇s theorem. This allows us to identify the reduced density matrix geometry with joint product numerical range II of the Hamiltonian interaction terms. We focus on the case where the interaction terms have certain structures, such that a ruled surface emerges naturally when taking a convex hull of ∏. We show that, a ruled surface on sitting in ∏ has a gapless origin, otherwise it has a symmetry breaking origin. As an example, we demonstrate that a famous ruled surface, known as the oloid, is a possible shape of , with two boundary pieces of symmetry breaking origin separated by two gapless lines.
