On-chip caches are commonly used in computer systems to hide long off-chip memory access latencies. To manage on-chip caches, either software-managed or hardware-managed schemes can be employed. State-of-art accelerators, such as the NVIDIA Fermi or Kepler GPUs and Intel's forthcoming MIC “Knights Landing” (KNL), support both software-managed caches, aka. shared memory (GPUs) or near memory (KNL), and hardware-managed L1 data caches (D-caches). Furthermore, shared memory and the L1 D-cache on a GPU utilize the same physical storage and their capacity can be configured at runtime (same for KNL). In this paper, we present an in-depth study to reveal interesting and sometimes unexpected tradeoffs between shared memory and the hardware-managed L1 D- caches in GPU architecture. In our study, the kernels utilizing the L1 D-caches are generated from those leveraging shared memory to ensure that the same optimizations such as tiling are applied equally in both versions. Our detailed analyses reveal that rather than cache hit rates, the following tradeoffs often have more profound performance impacts. On one hand, the kernels utilizing the L1 caches may support higher degrees of thread-level parallelism, offer more opportunities for data to be allocated in registers, and sometimes result in lower dynamic instruction counts. On the other hand, the applications utilizing shared memory enable more coalesced accesses and tend to achieve higher degrees of memory-level parallelism. Overall, our results show that most benchmarks perform significantly better with shared memory than the L1 D-caches due to the high impact of memory-level parallelism and memory coalescing.

Over the past generation, data warehousing and online analytical processing (OLAP) applications have become the cornerstone of contemporary decision support environments. Typically, OLAP servers are implemented on top of either proprietary array-based storage engines (MOLAP) or as extensions to conventional relational DBMSs (ROLAP). While MOLAP systems do indeed provide impressive performance on common analytics queries, they tend to have limited scalability. Conversely, ROLAP's table oriented model scales quite nicely, but offers mediocre performance at best relative to the MOLAP systems. In this paper, we describe a storage and indexing framework that aims to provide both MOLAP like performance and ROLAP like scalability by essentially combining some of the best features from both. Based upon a combination of R-trees and bitmap indexes, the storage engine has been integrated with a robust OLAP query engine prototype that is able to fully exploit the efficiency of the proposed storage model. Specifically, it utilizes an OLAP algebra coupled with a domain specific query optimizer, to map user queries directly to the storage and indexing framework. Experimental results demonstrate that not only does the design improve upon more naive approaches, but that it does indeed offer the potential to optimize both query performance and scalability. © 2013. In this paper an application of genetic algorithms (GAs) and Gaussian Naïve Bayesian (GNB) approach is studied to explore the brain activities by decoding specific cognitive states from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. However, in case of fMRI data analysis the large number of attributes may leads to a serious problem of classifying cognitive states. It significantly increases the computational cost and memory usage of a classifier. Hence to address this problem, we use GAs for selecting optimal set of attributes and then GNB classifier in a pipeline to classify different cognitive states. The experimental outcomes prove its worthiness in successfully classifying different cognitive states. The detailed comparison study with popular machine learning classifiers illustrates the importance of such GA-Bayesian approach applied in pipeline for fMRI data analysis.

The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is considered as a powerful technique for performing brain activation studies by measuring neural activities. However, the tons of voxels over time are posed a major challenge to neuroscientists and researchers for analyzing it effectively. The decoding of brain activities required fast, accurate, and reliable classifiers. In classification scenario, although machine learning classifiers have shown promising result, but the individual classifiers have their limitations. This paper proposes a method based on the ensemble of Neural Networks applying on fMRI data for cognitive state classification. The Neural Networks (NNs) classifier has been selected for ensembling. The Fuzzy Integral (FI) approach is used as an efficient tool for combining different classifiers. The classifiers ensemble technique performs better than the single base learner by reducing misclassification as well as both bias and variance. The proposed technique successfully classifies different cognitive states with high classification accuracy. The performance improvement while applying the ensemble technique as compared with the individual neural network strongly recommends the usefulness of the proposed approach.

Most of the time developers make extensive use of software tools in a software development process to support them in their day-to-day work. One of the first and most important phases is the design phase. Here tools are missing which support the creative and collaborative workflow (parallel/distributed). At the moment software designers uses classic whiteboards in team meetings to express their ideas. Subsequently a coworker uses a mobile phone or a camera to take photos of the work and remodel the picture with a modeling tool. That process is very inconvenient, error-prone and hinders a creative modeling cycle. For overcoming this ineffective process this paper shows a new approach to use digital whiteboards to transform free hand sketches in formal models and back again while modeling in a distributed team. The approach is completely independent from a pre-defined modeling language. It provides an interactive training mode to learn new graphical syntax elements and map these elements to formal metamodel entities. Based on the approach a collaborative sketch and modeling infrastructure was implemented. Copyright © 2013 for the individual papers by the papers' authors.

A large portion of people suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the world. Unfortunately, some of them don't know they have been contracted CKD until they need dialysis treatment at the end stage. Diagnosis through non-invasive ultrasonic imaging techniques become important clinical approaches for detecting CKD, and high potential or at-risk CKD patients could avoid being infected via blood test and/or reduce chances of abrupt deterioration in renal function by taking iodinated contrast medium. This research established a detection system based on computer vision and machine learning techniques for facilitating diagnosis of CKD and different stages of CKD. Novel features and support vector machine were applied for rapid detection. In this study, several evaluations on different clustered groups were performed and compared according to estimated glomerular filtration rates (GFR). In addition, the proposed system required 0.016 seconds in average for feature extraction and classification for each testing case. The results showed that the system could produce consistent diagnosis based on noninvasive ultrasonographic approaches and which could be considered as the most proper clinical diagnosis and medical treatment for CKD patients.

A bug report contains many fields, such as product, component, severity, priority, fixer, operating system (OS), platform, etc., which provide important information for the bug triaging and fixing process. It is important to make sure that bug information is correct since previous studies showed that the wrong assignment of bug report fields could increase the bug fixing time, and even delay the delivery of the software. In this paper, we perform an empirical study on bug report field reassignments in open-source software projects. To better understand why bug report fields are reassigned, we manually collect 99 recent bug reports that had their fields reassigned and emailed their reporters and developers asking why these fields got reassigned. Then, we perform a large-scale empirical study on 8 types of bug report field reassignments in 4 open-source software projects containing a total of 190,558 bug reports. In particular, we investigate 1) the number of bug reports whose fields get reassigned, 2) the difference in bug fixing time between bug reports whose fields get reassigned and those whose fields are not reassigned, 3) the duration a field in a bug report gets reassigned, 4) the number of fields in a bug report that get reassigned, 5) the number of times a field in a bug report gets reassigned, and 6) whether the experience of bug reporters affect the reassignment of bug report fields. We find that a large number (approximately 80%) of bug reports have their fields reassigned, and the bug reports whose fields get reassigned require more time to be fixed than those without field reassignments.
