Mobile application development operates in a market characterized by low barriers to market entry, short time-to-market and the need for rapid return on investment, making it suitable for exploiting the potential of open innovation. Technology-driven entrepreneurs often diverge from the standard practice of antecedent business case analysis. We report here upon the result of a six-month empirical investigation of this question, performed within an incubator setting, and our analysis of the results indicates a reasonable probability of success, at least for ventures with access to experienced requirements practitioners. Our results indicate that incorporating RE techniques from the beginning of the venture has the potential to reduce the risks associated with the missing business case analysis. The field observations have also identified requirements engineering challenges in this domain worthy of further investigation. In particular, the relative impact of business requirements upon the technology requirements is extreme and requirements methods must respond not only to agile development processes but function even when a pivot (an instantaneous and complete change) in business focus occurs.

Can one estimate the number of remaining faults in a software system? A credible estimation technique would be immensely useful to project managers as well as customers. It would also be of theoretical interest, as a general law of softwareengineering. We investigate possible answers in the context of automated random testing, a method that is increasingly accepted as an effective way to discover faults. Our experimental results, derived from best-fit analysis of a variety of mathematical functions, based on a large number of automated tests of library code equipped with automated oracles in the form of contracts, suggest a poly-logarithmic law. Although further confirmation remains necessary on different code bases and testing techniques, we argue that understanding the laws of testing may bring significant benefits for estimating the number of detectable faults and comparing different projects and practices. Adaptive scaffolding in computer-based learning environments (CBLEs) continues to be an active area of research, with researchers framing the problem as determining the what, when, how, and by whom or what of adap- tive scaffolding strategies. This paper presents our recent work in developing a taxonomy for adaptive scaffolds in CBLEs. The taxonomy, motivated by previ- ous work in developing adaptive scaffolds, attempts to address the how of scaf- folding by describing the tools and techniques available for scaffolding in CBLEs. We present the taxonomy, which describes adaptive scaffolds as one or more suggestions, assertions, and learning task modifications, and we discuss the utility of the taxonomy in describing adaptive scaffolding strategies.

The goal of this study is to understand the dynamics of collaboration within globally-distributed teams working in a realistic Human-System Interaction design and softwareengineering context. Quantitative data on communications were collected by capturing virtually all of the communications between the team members. Qualitative data were collected through the interviews conducted by the instructors. The projects successfully ended in the software implementation of the front end of an Android app based on the Human-System Interaction design. The results reveal some of the challenges associated with working in interdisciplinary and global settings and suggest areas of caution for future such HSI educational experiences.
