This poster paper presents a high-level description of the Metalogue project that is developing a multi-modal dialogue system that is able to implement interactive behaviors that seem natural to users and is flexible enough to exploit the full potential of multimodal interaction. We provide an outline of the initial work undertaken to define a an open architecture for the integrated Metalogue system. This system includes components that are necessary for the implementation of the processing stages for a variety of application domains: initialization, training, information gathering, orchestration, multimodality, dialogue management, speech recognition, speech synthesis and user modelling.

Children need to learn at school the things that matter in the 21st century. What does really matter though and what does 21st century's primary school learning involve? This paper seeks to explore what this involves and the role that educational technology plays particularly in primary school mathematics. Nowadays children learn through connections and collaborations facilitated by technology that could then lead to knowledge creation. Nevertheless, there is no technology that has an impact on learning on its own. This depends on how it used. In order to address this further we present a set of recommendations that could be relevant to educators, researchers, policymakers and the industry.

Actual software development processes define the different steps developers have to perform during a development project. Usually these development steps are not described independently from each other—a more or less formal flow of development step is an essential part of the development process definition. In practice, we observe that often the process definitions are hardly used and very seldom “lived”. One reason is that the predefined general process flow does not reflect the specific constraints of the individual project. For that reasons we claim to get rid of the process flow definition as part of the development process. Instead we describe in this paper an approach to smartly assist developers in software process execution. The approach observes the developer’s actions and predicts his next development step based on the project process history. Therefore we apply machine learning resp. sequence learning approaches based on a general rule based process model and its semantics. Finally we show two evaluations of the presented approach: The data of the first is derived from a synthetic scenario. The second evaluation is based on real project data of an industrial enterprise.

In this paper we describe our custom designed, low-power, intelligent sensor platform, and a novel analysis approach for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). More specifically we show how Acoustic Emission (AE) signals were recorded during aluminium and steel beam break tests utilizing two channels on our MarmotE platform, and how subsequent low-resource but accurate onset time detection yielded Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) results. We also demonstrate a new, simplified method to pick valid AE events from a vast set of noisy measurements, and prove the feasibility of our ideas by showing that our approach provided results comparable to widely used industry methods with modest resource requirements.

Awareness of emotion status of people is fairly important for aged ones, the ones with sub-health status, and various patients in order to keep them in good mood. The emotion recognition at run time is intrinsically challenging due to its complexity nature. On the one hand, the awareness of human emotion should be achieved as non-intrusive as possible. On the other hand, the android smart phones on the market are increasingly popular which are equipped with various sensors that can be used to achieve the awareness of emotion status. In this paper, we propose an approach based on the heart beat rate and contents of user's talk, which are obtained from built-in camera and microphone on smart phones. We first classify anger, joy, normal, and sadness based on heart rates, then the emotion recognition is further improved by emotional key words in a talk. We have evaluated this approach in terms of recognition accuracy and power consumption found that the accuracy can achieve 84.7%.

Retinal vascular branch and crossover points are unique features for each individual that can be used as a reliable biometric for personal authentication and can be used for information retrieval and security application. In this work, a novel biometric authentication scheme is proposed based on the retinal vascular network features. We apply an automatic technique to detect and identify retinal vascular branch and crossover points. These branch and crossover points are mapped from prominent blood vessels in the image. For this, a novel vessel width measurement method is applied and vessels more than certain widths are selected. Based on these vessel segments their corresponding branch and crossover points are identified. Invariant features are constructed through Geometric Hashing of the detected branch and crossover points. We consider the crossover points for modelling a basis pair and all other points together for locations in the hash table entries. Thus, the models are invariant to rotation, translation and scaling. For each person, the system is trained with the models to accept or reject a claimed identity. The initial results show that the proposed method has achieved 100% detection accuracy which is highly potential for reliable person identification.
