This paper proposes a model-driven approach for the analysis of multimedia documents. Structural and behavioral properties of a multimedia document are verified thus guaranteeing its well-formedness and conformance before deployment. Multimedia documents are interpreted as object model instances of a multimedia document metamodel. Structural properties are verified using consistency reasoning over an ontology representation of the given object model together with OCL invariant validation (i.e., the application of OCL invariants to the given object model). Behavioral properties are verified through model checking on the transition system associated to the given multimedia document. Both metamodel and user-defined behavioral properties are verified.

This work presents the tools and procedure developed by the authors to create synchronous collaborative virtual and remote laboratories within a web course produced with a learning management system. Thanks to them, an instructor can prepare virtual and/or remote laboratories and easily add them to its online web course, automatically obtaining collaborative features. Also, any member (either a student or a teacher), as long as s/he is enrolled in the course, can use the system to invite other enrolled users to a real-time collaborative experimental session with any of the laboratories that belong to that course. The extension tools presented in this work are based in two different free and open source software programs: Moodle as the learning management system that offers the web environment and Easy Java Simulations for creating the virtual and remote laboratories with collaborative support. © 2012 IFAC.

There are many popular Integrated Development Environments (IDE) that provide multiple visualizations and other sophisticated functionalities to facilitate program comprehension and debugging. To better understand the effectiveness and role of multiple visualizations, we conducted a preliminary study of java program debugging with a professional, multi-representation IDE. We found that program code and dynamic representations (dynamic viewer, variable watch and output) attracted the most attention of programmers. Static representations like Unified Modeling language (UML) Diagrams and Control Structure Diagrams (CSD) saw significantly lesser usage. Interesting eye gaze patterns of programmers were also revealed by the study. © 2012 Authors.

Integrated Development Environments (IDE) generate multiple graphical and textual representations of programs. Co-ordination of these representations during program comprehension and debugging can be a complex task. In order to better understand the role and effectiveness of multiple representations, we conducted an empirical study of Java program debugging with a professional, multi-representation IDE. We found that program code and dynamic representations (dynamic viewer, variable watch and output) attracted the most attention of programmers. Static representations like Unified Modeling language (UML) Diagrams and Control Structure Diagrams (CSD) saw significantly lesser usage. We analyzed gaze patterns by segmenting the debugging sessions into three, five and fifteen minute intervals, and classifying gazes into short and long gazes. Novel data mining techniques were used to detect high frequency patterns from eye tracking data. Visual pattern differences were found among participants based on their programming experience, familiarity with the IDE and debugging performance. © 2012 ACM.

This paper is devoted to the finite-time control problem for multiple manipulators, where unmodeled dynamics is taken into consideration. An effective coordinated control strategy is introduced, under which distributed protocols with continuous feedbacks are proposed. By applying the homogeneous theory for stability analysis, it is proven that the multi-robot system can be globally finite-time stabilized through our protocols. Numerical simulations on four manipulators with two degrees of freedom are presented to validate the effectiveness of the control strategy.

In this paper, we address the problem of multitarget tracking with unknown measurement noise variance parameters by the probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter. Based on the concept of conjugate prior distributions for noise statistics, the inverse-Gamma distributions are employed to describe the dynamics of the noise variance parameters and a novel implementation to the PHD recursion is developed by representing the predicted and the posterior intensities as mixtures of Gaussian-inverse-Gamma terms. As the target state and the noise variance parameters are coupled in the likelihood functions, the variational Bayesian approximation approach is applied so that the posterior is derived in the same form as the prior and the resulting algorithm is recursive. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter.

This paper studies the problem of state estimation for jump Markov linear systems with uncompensated biases. By describing the state and the measurement biases as additive random variables, a suboptimal filter has been developed by applying the basic interacting multiple model (IMM) approach. To derive a precise representation of the biases contributions to the state estimation, three auxiliary matrices are introduced with respect to the correlation between the state estimation errors and the biases, which helps to derive mode-conditioned estimates in the framework of the IMM. A numerical example involving tracking a maneuvering target is provided to compare the performance of the proposed filter with that of the augmented state filter.

The 2013 Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Pioneers Workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the 8 th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, is the premiere venue for student research in the field. This highly selective workshop seeks to foster creativity, communication, and collaboration between the world's top student researchers in the field of human-robot interaction. Pioneers Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the current state of HRI, to present their research, and to network with one another and with select senior researchers in a setting that is less formal and more interactive then the main conference. The theme for this year is Re-envisioning HRI: Dealing With the Elephants in Our Room. The workshop aims to bring forward difficult to discuss issues to help the field achieve more balanced perspectives and a clearer picture of what sort of future we are building.
