The increasing use and reliance on Distributed Embedded Real-Time systems (DERTS) demand the enhancement of their capabilities. This along with the unique characteristics of DERTS, such as resource constraints, make the design and development more complex. State-of-the-art software development methods like Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) and Model-Driven Development can be used to cope with these complexities. However, both of the methods require the system to be designed at a higher level of abstraction and the details are provided at lower levels. Such design models for DERTS with different levels of abstractions are still currently unavailable. This paper presents four basic design models representing different levels of abstraction, to be used in Service-Oriented DERTS design. The proposed models were applied in the Home Automation domain for verification purposes. This level-by-level modelling does not only simplify the design process, but can also be used as part of a Service-Oriented modelling framework for DERTS. Furthermore, these design models can support service composition during Service-Oriented DERTS development. The service composition modelling would be beneficial for CASE tools development in supporting designers working at different levels of abstraction. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Impaired people require additional attention by the people around them and also by the people who design artifacts and tools for them. We investigate the interaction design aspects of a wheelchair controller, developed by embedded software engineers in the laboratory, according to the rules of physicality. The purpose of the study is to facilitate impaired people with ease of use while bridging the gap between human-computer interaction and embedded software engineering. By proposing Nintendo's Wiimote as wheelchair controller, we intend to produce intuitive, simple and natural interaction with the wheelchair. © 2011 IEEE.

software engineering (SE) and human-computer interaction (HCI) are often regarded as two separate entities while the fact is the two share many similarities and should affect each other to produce a better product or software. In this paper, we compare two component frameworks that integrate both HCI and SE together. Our aim is to understand how each framework considers usability in the software development, and, to identify the strengths and weaknesses of both frameworks. The two component frameworks are IKnowU and UBAF. Comparison of these two frameworks can be useful for researchers as we can the four important criteria - model, architecture, usability work and process, that make of a framework which has usability as its paramount objective. © 2011 IEEE.

Embedded systems are proliferating in vast application areas of life with ever increasing multifarious functionalities. Due to the focus of research and development on growing software issues, the naturalness of physical interface remains neglected resulting in interaction complexities for the user. In this work we investigate the complexities of three embedded systems including;washing machine;camera;and MP3 player according to the principles of physicality. By assigning quantitative values to each physicality principle, it is evident from the analysis that inverse action and compliant interaction are two powerful principles that if applied properly augment the natural interaction with the device. As the ubiquitous computing is knocking at the market doors, it is significant enough for the embedded system developers to incorporate the natural interaction capabilities in every day embedded devices by studying, discovering, and reducing the complexities of physical user interfaces. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper is devoted to the modeling problem of hypersonic vehicle with significant couplings. An integrated approach is developed to analytically model the dynamics of hypersonic vehicle, in which the effects of variable mass, spherical rotating earth, and couplings among the sub-models are considered. Furthermore, a preliminary analysis is conducted using the general data of a hypersonic vehicle. The simulation results show that the maximum of the Coriolis force can reach values up to 7.02% of the vehicle weight, and that the thermal load determined by the nonuniform aerodynamic heating and the properties of the structure has a significant influence on the elastic deformation.

Current research efforts are being directed to commit with the long-term view of self-management properties for wireless telecommunications. Technology has transformed the cell phone from being a mere phone to becoming an indispensable medium for contact, information and entertainment. The new paradigm in mobile services lies in providing a location-based user experience and here lies the tremendous scope for expansion of location-based services (LBS). One of the key approaches that have been recognized as an enabler of such a view is policy-based management, which has been mostly acknowledged as a methodology that provides adaptability and support to automatically assign network resources, control Quality of Service and security, by considering administratively specified rules. The hype of policy-based management was to commit with these features in run-time as a result of changeable network conditions resulting from the interactions of users, applications and existing resources. This paper proposes an adaptive architectural framework which deals with the critical nature of addressing the policy conflict problem. In this framework, policies are used as a mechanism to direct and adapt the behavior of self-adaptive systems. This policy-based framework consists of a set of processes, the self-coordinator process represents as the main process;which coordinates all the framework activities. Furthermore, the paper provides a guideline to avoid static and dynamic policy conflicts of different applications. © 2011 IEEE.

Currently, software testing is mainly carried on independently from software architecture-related information. Some approaches propose to perform integration and regression testing with respect to software architecture descriptions, but less attention has been paid to analysing software architecture in order to develop a less costly and time-consuming test plan that covers the requirements of the system of interest. If on one side, it is well known that providing an effective test plan is crucial to software quality, on the other side software testing is extremely difficult because it stems from the complexity of current software systems. In this paper we (i) elaborate on how a new architectural analysis can help in producing better test plans and (ii) identify a set of corresponding research challenges. We believe that considering and analysing architectural information for requirements satisfaction testing purposes will provide substantial benefits in terms of test plan specification process, test plan effectiveness, and test cases understandability. © 2011 ACM.

Consider a backoff algorithm for medium access in wireless networks where a node chooses with probability 1 - q to transmit right away and with probability q to transmit after CW slots, where CW is the maximum value of the contention window. We study a variation of the 802.11 protocol called XVBEB which uses the above backoff scheme and give a theoretical analysis of its saturation throughput. Simulation results show that the throughput of XVBEB is better than that of 802.11 for saturated CBR traffic. Furthermore, XVBEB also exhibits lower packet loss, delay and delay variation than 802.11 for both VBR and VoIP traffic for a variety of load conditions. © 2011 IEEE.

The one strong point of XML is that it allows document owners to create their own structure and tag names. It might be that some XML documents contain the same information but use a different structure and/or tag names that have the same meaning but in different words. It will be difficult not only to search all relevant information in one query but also to use exchanged information right away. If the sender and receiver use different formats of XML, then either the sender or receiver has to reformat his XML. The best way to make searching and/or exchanging information easier is to ensure that all XML documents are in the same format. XML Tag Recommendation (XTR) is introduced to support this idea. XTR is based on case-based reasoning framework. It collects the most used tag name as a solution for future use. When you insert a new problem to XTR, it finds the most similar case and recommends the solution from that case to the XML document owner. The XML document owner can change his document format into the recommended solution format. Thus, the XML documents are in the same format. This makes searching and/or exchanging information more powerful. © 2011 IEEE.

Component-Based System (CBS) is an approach to build applications from deployed components. It provides efficiency, reliability, maintainability. The challenge of interpreting the results of performance analysis and generate alternative design to build component system is quite critical in the software performance domain. Although, many approaches have been proposed and were successfully applied to predict software performance, still span of design space hinder the selection of the appropriate design alternative. Meta-heuristics such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) methods have proven its usefulness to solve the problem even with multi-degree of freedom. But, in recent investigations Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), an alternative search technique, often outperformed GA when applied to various problems. In this paper we describe performance prediction approach based on PSO for component-Based system development. The proposed approach aids developers to effectively trades-off between architectural designs alternatives. Boundary search technique and PSO are used to provoke more efficient results. To the best of our knowledge we are the first who employ PSO in software performance prediction. Outlines of our approach are presented and a case study applied using GA is described to be used by our approach for validation. This paper has concluded that, PSO technique can be used to effectively generate alternatives in spanned design space and facilitate the design decision during the development process. © 2011 IEEE.
