Distributed sensor Webs typically operate in dynamic environments where operating conditions, transient phenomena, availability of resources, and network connection quality change frequently and unpredictably. Often these changes can neither be completely anticipated nor accurately described during development or deployment. Our prior work has described how we developed agents and services that are capable of monitoring these changing conditions and adapting system parameters using the CORBA component model (CCM) deployment infrastructure as part of the multiagent architecture for coordinated responsive observations (MACRO) platform. Our recent application of MACRO to the South East Alaska monitoring network for science, Telecommunications, Education, and Research (SEAMONSTER) project has identified new distributed deployment infrastructure challenges common to computationally constrained field environments in adaptive sensor Webs. These challenges include standardized execution of low-level hardware-dependent actions and on-going data tasks, automated provisioning of agents for heterogeneous field hardware, and minimizing deployment infrastructure overhead. This paper describes how we extended MACRO to address these sensor Web challenges by creating an action/effector framework standardizing the execution of lightweight actions and providing for automated provisioning of MACRO agents, in addition to footprint optimizations to the underlying CCM infrastructure.

For the alarm flooding problem, a hierarchical alarm processing model is studied to filter, reduce and correlate alarms. In filtering, false alarms are eliminated with repository. In reduction, a reduction algorithm is designed to remove the duplicate alarms in real time. In correlation, a frequent episodes algorithm is implemented on training data to help clustering-based correlation algorithm find the intrusion patterns. Through the above processing, the false and invalid alarms are eliminated, which eases the networks system and administrator's burden. Meanwhile, intrusion patterns can be found and alarm prediction can be reported. Experimental results show the model is effective. ©2009 IEEE.

The advent of high-throughput techniques such as microarray data enabled researchers to elucidate process in a cell that fruitfully useful for pathological and medical. For such opportunities, microarray gene expression data have been explored and applied for various types of studies e.g. gene association, gene classification and construction of gene network. Unfortunately, since gene expression data naturally have a few of samples and thousands of genes, this leads to a biological and technical problems. Thus, the availability of artificial intelligence techniques couples with statistical methods can give promising results for addressing the problems. These approaches derive two well known methods: supervised and unsupervised. Whenever possible, these two superior methods can work well in classification and clustering in term of class discovery and class prediction. Significantly, in this paper we will review the benefit of network-based in term of interaction data for classification in identification of class cancer.

Study on topology structure of protein interaction network has been suggested as a potential effort to discover biological functions and cellular mechanisms at systems level. In this work, we introduced a graph partitioning method to partition protein interaction network into several clusters of interacting proteins that share similar functions called functional modules. Our proposed method encompasses three major steps which are preprocessing, informative proteins selection and graph partitioning algorithm. We utilized the protein-protein interaction dataset from MIPS to test the proposed method. We use gene ontology information to validate the biological significance of the detected modules. We also downloaded protein complex information to evaluate the performance of our method. In our analysis, the method showed high accuracy performance indicates that this method capable to detect highly significance modules. Hence, this showed that functional modules detected by the proposed method are biologically significant which can be used to predict uncharacterized proteins and infer new complexes.

A large number of embedded computing systems are modeled as hybrid system with both discrete and continuous dynamics. In this paper, we present algorithms for analyzing nonlinear time-invariant continuous-time systems by employing reachability algorithms. We propose synthesis algorithms for finding sets of initial states for the continuous dynamical systems so that temporal properties, such as safety and liveness properties, are satisfied. The initial sets produced by the algorithms are related to some classical concepts for continuous dynamical systems, such as invariant sets and domains of attraction.

Scientific computing often requires the availability of a massive number of computers for performing large scale experiments. Traditionally, these needs have been addressed by using high-performance computing solutions and installed facilities such as clusters and super computers, which are difficult to setup, maintain, and operate. Cloud computing provides scientists with a completely new model of utilizing the computing infrastructure. Compute resources, storage resources, as well as applications, can be dynamically provisioned (and integrated within the existing infrastructure) on a pay per use basis. These resources can be released when they are no more needed. Such services are often offered within the context of a service level agreement (SLA), which ensure the desired quality of service (QoS). Aneka, an enterprise cloud computing solution, harnesses the power of compute resources by relying on private and public clouds and delivers to users the desired QoS. Its flexible and service based infrastructure supports multiple programming paradigms that make Aneka address a variety of different scenarios: from finance applications to computational science. As examples of scientific computing in the cloud, we present a preliminary case study on using Aneka for the classification of gene expression data and the execution of fMRI brain imaging workflow.

The decentralized detection performance, using wireless passive sensor networks, is analyzed according to the minimum probability of error criterion. Passive sensors communicate their measurements to the reader using data network packets, and therefore, the two main phenomena affecting the detection performance are packet loss and packet delay. In this paper, we formulate the decentralized detection problem with passive sensors and show that the optimal decision rule with packet loss is the likelihood ratio test. We present a comparative analysis study between detection with ideal and non-ideal channels, for the problem of DC level detection in white Gaussian noise. We validate the analytical results using Monte Carlo simulation study. Finally, we present a simple scheme for adaptive detector design, to restore the original detection performance, with the cost of increasing the delay for detection.

Alongside multitude of innovations and consequential changes in lifestyle, the ability to access home appliances or security cameras over the Internet has been in demand for some years now. In this paper, we propose an efficient, low-cost and user-friendly method to access networked home appliances over the Internet, providing strong, well integrated, three levels of security to the whole application and user data. We present a scheme in which, iris image is used for user authentication and after performing its hashing (using BioHashing), it is sent to the server through a secure communication channel utilizing Secure Socket Layer (SSL). The deterministic feature sequence from the iris image is extracted using 1D log-Gabor filters. Mersenne twister random number generator algorithm is used to produce an array of pseudo-random numbers which is later orthonormalised employing GramSchmidt orthonormalization algorithm for performing BioHashing. In addition to this protected interaction mechanism, we use a single Authentication Server in order to enable access to the home appliances of a complete housing society via Internet, which reduces user responsibility and improves accessibility of this endeavor without compromising on system security. We demonstrate the perfect recognition efficiency of this system with equal error rate (EER) of 0% on CASIA 1 iris image dataset.

Bio-signal analysis is one of the most important approaches to biomedical engineering. The health information such as ECG, PCG, EMG and EEG are often recorded in digital format to be analyzed. In this paper, a bio-signal analyzing web service system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier technique is proposed. The bio-signals are recorded in digital format as the input of the system. In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), the system under web services .NET is designed. The system provides features including heterogeneous platform, protocols, as well as applications. The system has been designed with the purpose of seamless integration into the Health Information System. © 2009 IEEE.

The growing awareness of the importance of non-functional requirements (NFRs) among the requirements engineering (RE) community in the last few years led to a heightened interest in NFRs description and modeling and, in turn, to the emergence of several models intended to capture and structure the relevant concepts defining the NFRs and their relations. Yet, most of the terms and concepts in use for describing NFRs have been loosely defined, and often there is no commonly accepted taxonomy of NFRs. Common Foundation is required to enable effective communication and to enable integration of NFRs' related research activities within the RE community. In this paper, this Common Foundation will be realized by developing an ontology-based approach which is adequate for projects taking into consideration the NFRs and their relations earlier in the software development and throughout the life cycle.
