Detecting errors early within the development process for an embedded system assists a developer in avoiding excessive error correction costs and minimizing catastrophic losses resulting from failures in deployed systems. Towards that end, this paper presents i2MAP, an iterative and incremental goal-driven process for constructing an analysis-level UML model of an embedded system. The UML model is formally analyzed for adherence to the behavioral properties captured in a companion goal model. The process uses goal modeling to capture the requirements of the system, and uses UML to capture analysis-level structural and behavioral information. Both types of i2MAP models can be used to drive a rigorous approach to model-driven development of embedded systems. In this paper, we illustrate the i2MAP process and the accompanying tool suite in the development of an embedded system model for an adaptive light control system.

This paper describes the design of an outdoor Distributed Mixed Reality (DMR) system to support multi-user interaction of multi-users and virtual object manipulations in a construction simulation. The proposed DMR system is based on an interactive animation system of operating virtual cranes and extends previous work in a significant manner by considering engineering constraints. Our design integrates a Head-Mounted Display, a GPS receiver, a 3D motion sensor, and a portable computer to carry out a construction simulation which can be run in the outdoors. We describe and evaluate the system design challenges and possible solutions for simulating multi-user collaborative construction activities within the DMR environment. Several issues related to tracking and registration, modeling, user interaction, and mobile networking are discussed. The proposed system prototype is demonstrated using a case study which simulates the deck rehabilitation project of a bridge. Using this system, two users can collaborate to replace a section of the bridge deck by operating two virtual cranes and communicating with each other. © 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers.

This paper describes a fully automated technique for detection and categorization of the seven basic facial expressions using Support Vector Machines (SVM). Facial expressions are communicated by subtle changes in one or more discrete features such as tightening the lips, raising the eyebrows, opening and closing of eyes or certain combinations of them, which can be identified through monitoring the changes in muscles movements (Action Units), located near about the regions of mouth, eyes and eyebrows. An analytic representation of face with fifteen feature points has been used that represent and identify the principle muscle actions as well as provide measurements of the discrete features responsible for each of the seven basic human emotions. Detection of these fifteen points of interest from the regions of eyes, eyebrows nose and mouth have been performed applying a standard image processing based multi-detector approach for facial feature point localization. The feature vector composed of fifteen features is then obtained by calculating the degree of displacement of five different pairs of points, and measuring the deviations of ten points from a non-changeable rigid point. Finally, obtained feature sets are used to train a SVM classifier so that it can categorize facial expressions when given to it in the form of a feature set. The developed automated facial expressions categorization system has been tested extensively on two publicly available facial expression databases and 91.30% and 84.07% of average successful categorization rate have been achieved. Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Given the requirement for software engineering graduates to operate in Global software Development (GSD) environments, educators need to develop teaching methods to enhance and instill GSD knowledge in their students. In this paper, we discuss two projects that provided students with a first-hand learning experience of working within GSD teams. One project was with Siemens Corporate Research, whose focus was to shadow the development of a real-life GSD project. The second project, whose focus was virtual team software testing, was carried out in collaboration with Ball State University. In parallel with these projects we undertook qualitative research during which we analyzed students' own written reflections and face-to-face interviews that focused on their learning experiences in these contexts. We identified three specific forms of learning which had taken place: pedagogical, pragmatic and the acquisition of specific globally distributed knowledge. Our findings confirm that mimicking real work settings has educational benefits for problem-based learning environments.

Model-based approaches have proven fruitful in the design and implementation of intelligent systems that provide automated diagnostic functions. A wide variety of models are used in these approaches to represent the particular domain knowledge, including analytic state-based models, input-output transfer function models, fault propagation models, and qualitative and quantitative physics-based models. Diagnostic applications are built around three main steps: observation, comparison, and diagnosis. If the modeling begins in the early stages of system development, engineering models such as fault propagation models can be used for testability analysis to aid definition and evaluation of instrumentation suites for observation of system behavior. Analytical models can be used in the design of monitoring algorithms that process observations to provide information for the second step in the process, comparison of expected behavior of the system to actual measured behavior. In the final diagnostic step, reasoning about the results of the comparison can be performed in a variety of ways, such as dependency matrices, graph propagation, constraint propagation, and state estimation. Realistic empirical evaluation and comparison of these approaches is often hampered by a lack of standard data sets and suitable testbeds. In this paper we describe the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT) at NASA Ames Research Center. The purpose of the testbed is to measure, evaluate, and mature diagnostic and prognostic health management technologies. This paper describes the testbed's hardware, software architecture, and concept of operations. A simulation testbed that accompanies ADAPT, and some of the diagnostic and decision support approaches being investigated are also discussed.

In this paper we present the findings of our research which aims to develop an emotions filter that can be added to an existing Malay text-to-speech system to produce an output expressing happiness, anger, sadness and fear. The end goal is to produce an output that is as natural as possible, thus contributing towards the enhancement of the existing system. The emotions filter was developed by manipulating pitch and duration of the output using a rule-based approach. The data was made up of emotional sentences produced by a female native speaker of Malay. The information extracted from the analysis was used to develop the filter. The emotional speech output underwent several acceptance tests. The results showed that the emotions filter developed was compatible with FASIH and other TTS systems using the rule-based approach of prosodic manipulation. However, further work need to be done to enhance the naturalness of the output.

Vehicular Ad-hoc networks (VANETS) provide distributed real time communication of traffic hazards and road conditions among vehicles in a radio line of sight. We propose using VANETS to securely communicate with Positive Train Control (PTC) systems in order to reduce Highway Rail Intersection (HRI) incidents. This paper illustrates the similarities and differences between the two systems, discusses previous research into the work already done to integrate the two systems, and outlines the additional work necessary to successfully integrate the two systems.

Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

software risk advisory tools have been developed to support Verification and Validation (V&V) processes for NASA flight projects on the Constellation program. The Orthogonal Defect Classification COnstructive QUALity MOdel (ODC COQUALMO) predicts software defects introduced and removed classifying them with ODC defect types, allowing various tradeoff analyses. We have been exploring methods to design and optimize V&V processes with static and dynamic versions of the quality model by integrating it with different risk minimization techniques. These techniques allow "what-if" experimentation to determine the impact of V&V techniques on specific risks and overall flight risk. V&V techniques are quantified from a value-based perspective when the defect model is integrated with machine learning, strategic optimization and JPL's Defect Detection and Prevention (DDP) risk management method. Results to-date show that the automated methods are practical for flight projects to design higher value V&V processes in shorter time and with fewer resources.
