In just few years, Federated Learning (FL) started to gain unprecedented attention given its ability to solve some fundamental privacy and communication challenges of traditional machine learning. Client selection is one of the main challenges in FL and is usually done in a random fashion, where the central server arbitrarily selects a certain number of clients to participate in each training round. However, given the heterogeneity of the client devices in terms of data quality and resource availability, randomly selecting clients is likely to result in long local training time and thus delayed global model’s convergence. To address this problem, in this work, we propose a real-time and on-demand client selection mechanism that employs the DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial clustering of Applications with Noise) clustering technique from machine learning to group the clients into a set of homogeneous clusters based on a set of criteria defined by the FL task owners, such as resource availability, data quality, data size, data freshness and non-IID degree. Based on the requirements of each FL task, the server then intelligently selects the clusters of clients that best match with each task’s requirements, thus improving the performance of the overall federated learning process. Experiments suggest that our solution significantly improves the accuracy of FL compared to the Vanilla FL approach.

Hyperledger Fabric stands as a leading framework for permissioned block-chain systems, ensuring data security and audit-ability for enterprise applications. As applications on this platform grow, understanding its complex configuration concerning various block-chain parameters becomes vital. These configurations significantly affect the system’s performance and cost. In this research, we introduce a Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) model to analyze Hyper-ledger Fabric’s performance, considering variations in block-chain parameters, computational resources, and transaction rates. We provide case studies to validate the utility of our model, aiding block-chain administrators in determining optimal configurations for their applications. A key observation from our model highlights the block size’s role in system response time. We noted an increased mean response time, between 1 to 25 seconds, due to variations in transaction arrival rates.

EpiTESTER: Testing Autonomous Vehicles with Epigenetic Algorithm and Attention Mechanism

Testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) under various environmental scenarios that lead the vehicles to unsafe situations is known to be challenging. Given the infinite possible environmental scenarios, it is essential to find critical scenarios efficiently. To this end, we propose a novel testing method, named EpiTESTER, by taking inspiration from epigenetics, which enables species to adapt to sudden environmental changes. In particular, EpiTESTER adopts gene silencing as its epigenetic mechanism, which regulates gene expression to prevent the expression of a certain gene, and the probability of gene expression is dynamically computed as the environment changes. Given different data modalities (e.g., images, lidar point clouds) in the context of AV, EpiTESTER benefits from a multi-model fusion transformer to extract high-level feature representations from environmental factors and then calculates probabilities based on these features with the attention mechanism. To assess the cost-effectiveness of EpiTESTER, we compare it with a classical genetic algorithm (GA) (i.e., without any epigenetic mechanism implemented) and EpiTESTER with equal probability for each gene. We evaluate EpiTESTER with four initial environments from CARLA, an open-source simulator for autonomous driving research, and an end-to-end AV controller, Interfuser. Our results show that EpiTESTER achieved a promising performance in identifying critical scenarios compared to the baselines, showing that applying epigenetic mechanisms is a good option for solving practical problems. © 2023, CC BY.

Education is essential for achieving many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, the education system focuses on empowering more educated people and improving the quality of the education system. One of the latest technologies to enhance the quality of education is Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Machine Learning (ML). As a result, ML has a significant influence on the education system. ML is currently widely applied in the education system for various tasks, such as creating models by monitoring student performance and activities that accurately predict student outcomes, their engagement in learning activities, decision-making, problem-solving capabilities, etc. In this research, we provide a survey of machine learning frameworks for both distributed (clusters of schools and universities) and centralized (university or school) educational institutions to predict the quality of students' learning outcomes and find solutions to improve the quality of their education system. Additionally, this work explores the application of ML in teaching and learning for further improvements in the learning environment for centralized and distributed education systems.

The advent of 5G and beyond networks is envisioned to support lower latency, higher data rates, and wider connectivity than previous cellular network generations. However, given the denser deployment of base stations (BSs) to accommodate such improvements, this results inevitably in a significant and unsustainable increase in the network’s energy consumption. Sleep Control (SC), which allows switching off some BS hardware components during light-traffic time, is considered a viable solution for greener and more energy-efficient Radio Access Networks (RAN). However, the optimization of SC is a highly challenging large-scale network combinatorial problem that depends on dynamic wireless channel conditions and varying traffic demands with stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. Driven by the benefits and efficiency of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which has been successfully applied to multiple wireless network optimization problems, this paper investigates DRL approaches addressing sleep control in 5G and beyond RAN. To this end, we propose a taxonomy to classify the related literature. Then, we provide an overview of the different components of the Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling the sequential decision-making of sleep control and the applied DRL algorithms. Finally, we highlight the main challenges in existing works and suggest novel strategies to address them.

In an era of heightened digital interconnectedness, businesses increasingly rely on third-party vendors to enhance their operational capabilities. However, this growing dependency introduces significant security risks, making it crucial to develop a robust framework to mitigate potential vulnerabilities. This paper proposes a comprehensive secure framework for managing third-party vendor risk, integrating blockchain technology to ensure transparency, traceability, and immutability in vendor assessments and interactions. By leveraging blockchain, the framework enhances the integrity of vendor security audits, ensuring that vendor assessments remain up-to-date and tamperproof. This proposed framework leverages smart contracts to reduce human error while ensuring real-time monitoring of compliance and security controls. By evaluating critical security controls—such as data encryption, access control mechanisms, multi-factor authentication, and zero-trust architecture—this approach strengthens an organization’s defense against emerging cyber threats. Additionally, continuous monitoring enabled by blockchain ensures the immutability and transparency of vendor compliance processes. In this paper, a case study on iHealth’s transition to AWS Cloud demonstrates the practical implementation of the framework, showing a significant reduction in vulnerabilities and marked improvement in incident response times. Through the adoption of this blockchain-enabled approach, organizations can mitigate vendor risks, streamline compliance, and enhance their overall security posture. Our findings highlight the importance of employing blockchain to enforce security controls and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. The rapid expansion and advancement of deepfake technology, which is specifically designed to create incredibly lifelike facial imagery and video content, has ignited a remarkable level of interest and curiosity across a multitude of fields, including but not limited to the realms of the entertainment industry, forensic analysis, cybersecurity and the innovative creation of digital characters. By harnessing the latest breakthroughs in deep learning methodologies, especially through the implementation of techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Autoencoders, Few-Shot Learning Strategies, and Transformer Neural Networks, the outcomes achieved in the generation of deepfakes have been nothing short of astounding and transformative. Furthermore, the recent advancements in diffusion models have served to invigorate and catalyze ongoing research efforts in this fascinating domain. At the same time, the ongoing evolution of detection technologies is being developed to counteract the potential for misuse associated with deepfakes, effectively addressing critical concerns that range from political manipulation to the dissemination of fake news and the ever-growing issue of cyberbullying. This comprehensive review paper meticulously investigates the most recent developments in both deepfake generation and detection, including around 400 publications, providing an in-depth analysis of the cutting-edge innovations that are shaping this rapidly evolving landscape. As the Metaverse develops, it is becoming more crucial to prioritize the safety of users, especially regarding the potential risks, such as users experiencing dizziness or making incorrect movements that may lead to falls. With more virtual environments becoming increasingly available and immersive, detecting and preventing falls within the Metaverse is required. Given the constrained resources of wearable sensors, precise fall prediction models are critical to efficiently analyzing data gathered by these devices. Traditional fall detection systems require centralizing data collection, which raises privacy concerns over the collected data. Resource-aware Split Federated Learning (RSFL) enables collaboration among multiple devices within the Metaverse to train a fall detection model, all while preserving individual data privacy. The approach also leverages parallelism in Federated Learning (FL) and Split Learning (SL) by decomposing training tasks between clients and servers. Moreover, we devise an efficient client selection mechanism to ensure timely training and model convergence performance. We implemented our architecture and assessed its performance using a sensory dataset. The evaluation results with the baseline demonstrate our architecture's superiority in terms of convergence time. Our approach mitigates data heterogeneity and privacy concerns, creating secure and efficient fall detection systems for the Metaverse.

After designing a simulation and running it locally on a small network instance, the implementation can be scaled-up via parallel and distributed computing (e.g., a cluster) to cope with massive networks. However, implementation changes can create errors (e.g., parallelism errors), which are difficult to identify since the aggregate behavior of an incorrect implementation of a stochastic network simulation can fall within the distributions expected from correct implementations. In this paper, we propose the first approach that applies machine learning to traces of network simulations to detect errors. Our technique transforms simulation traces into images by reordering the network's adjacency matrix, and then training supervised machine learning models. Our evaluation on three simulation models shows that we can easily detect previously encountered types of errors and even confidently detect new errors. This work opens up numerous opportunities by examining other simulation models, representations (i.e., matrix reordering algorithms), or machine learning techniques.
