The Arabic language has different variants that can roughly be classified into three major types, namely Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Dialectal Arabic (DA), and Classical Arabic (CA). There are slight variations between CA and MSA regarding pronunciation, syntax, and terminology. On the other hand, DA is quite different from MSA and CA in that it reflects the country of origin, or at least the geographic location of the speaker if the mobility factor is considered. Deep learning demonstrated its effectiveness in DA detection tasks, leveraging neural network models such as transformer models, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). Researchers have established models that automatically discriminate between Arabic dialects by processing contextual information, linguistic features, and phonetic patterns embedded in large datasets. Using Deep Learning (DL) in Arabic dialect detection contributes in various complex systems to the development of natural language processing. It assists in addressing the problems related to a wide variety of Arabic dialects, which facilitate applications including machine translation, speech recognition, and sentimental analysis tailored to regional linguistic variation. This study suggests an Enhanced Fractal Cheetah Optimization Algorithm with Deep Learning for Integrated Arabic Dialect Identification (ECOADL-IADI) technique. The ECOADL-IADI technique mainly intends to classify the variations of the Arabic language into multiple classes. At the preliminary level, the ECOADL-IADI technique performs preprocessing of Arabic text. Next, the BERT word embedding process is carried out. The ECOADL-IADI technique applies a Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network (BiRNN) model for Arabic dialect identification. Lastly, the ECOA-based hyperparameter selection process improves the classifier outcomes of the BiRNN model. Robust generalization aims to tackle the most challenging data distributions which are rare in the training set and contain severe noises, i.e., photon-limited corruptions. Common solutions such as distributionally robust optimization (DRO) focus on the worst-case empirical risk to ensure low training error on the uncommon noisy distributions. However, due to the over-parameterized model being optimized on scarce worst-case data, DRO fails to produce a smooth loss landscape, thus struggling on generalizing well to the test set. Therefore, instead of focusing on the worst-case risk minimization, we propose SharpDRO by penalizing the sharpness of the worst-case distribution, which measures the loss changes around the neighbor of learning parameters. Through worst-case sharpness minimization, the proposed method successfully produces a flat loss curve on the corrupted distributions, thus achieving robust generalization. Moreover, by considering whether the distribution annotation is available, we apply SharpDRO to two problem settings and design a worst-case selection process for robust generalization. Theoretically, we show that SharpDRO has a great convergence guarantee. Experimentally, we simulate photon-limited corruptions using CIFAR10/100 and ImageNet30 datasets and show that SharpDRO exhibits a strong generalization ability against severe corruptions and exceeds well-known baseline methods with large performance gains.

The proliferation of digital health technologies has led to an abundance of personal health data. However, querying and retrieving specific health-related information from disparate sources can be challenging and inconvenient, particularly for older individuals unfamiliar with technology. While ChatGPT offers a conversational interface, it lacks domain-specific knowledge, including personalized health information. To address this limitation, we present a novel approach that combines a knowledge graph and GPT to enable personalized health queries. Our solution utilizes a personal knowledge graph as a comprehensive knowledge source and fine-tunes GPT to provide accurate responses. We have implemented a voice assistant mobile app incorporating this knowledge graph-assisted GPT model and conducted initial feasibility testing.

Loss functions are at the heart of deep learning, shaping how models learn and perform across diverse tasks. They are used to quantify the difference between predicted outputs and ground truth labels, guiding the optimization process to minimize errors. Selecting the right loss function is critical, as it directly impacts model convergence, generalization, and overall performance across various applications, from computer vision to time series forecasting. This paper presents a comprehensive review of loss functions, covering fundamental metrics like Mean Squared Error and Cross-Entropy to advanced functions such as Adversarial and Diffusion losses. We explore their mathematical foundations, impact on model training, and strategic selection for various applications, including computer vision (Discriminative and generative), tabular data prediction, and time series forecasting. For each of these categories, we discuss the most used loss functions in the recent advancements of deep learning techniques. Also, this review explore the historical evolution, computational efficiency, and ongoing challenges in loss function design, underlining the need for more adaptive and robust solutions. Emphasis is placed on complex scenarios involving multi-modal data, class imbalances, and real-world constraints. Finally, we identify key future directions, advocating for loss functions that enhance interpretability, scalability, and generalization, leading to more effective and resilient deep learning models. © 2025, CC BY.

Climate is rapidly changing around the world. Over time, there have been significant changes in the weather. Rainfall is now erratic due to climate change. The frequency of extreme weather events like droughts and floods has increased due to climate change, necessitating the need for more precise and timely rainfall forecasts. For strategic reasons including agriculture, water resource management, and architectural design, rain forecasting is crucial. The naturally occurring non-stationary component in the rainfall time series impairs model performance for practical hydrologists and drought risk assessors. We present a rain predicting model based on machine learning to address the forecasting issue. In our work, we predict the possibility of rain the next day on the basis of last 10 years' data. The variables that were calculated during the experiments were humidity, pressure, evaporation, sunshine, rainfall, and so on. Random Forest gave the 90% accuracy with 0.904 Area under Curve, highest out of all the algorithms. The model's performance will significantly aid in the rain forecast.

With the growing Deaf and Hard of Hearing population worldwide and the persistent shortage of certified sign language interpreters, there is a pressing need for an efficient, signs-driven, integrated end-to-end translation system, from sign to gloss to text and vice-versa. There has been a wealth of research on machine translations and related reviews. However, there are few works on sign language machine translation considering the particularity of the language being continuous and dynamic. This paper aims to address this void, providing a retrospective analysis of the temporal evolution of sign language machine translation algorithms and a taxonomy of the Transformers architectures, the most used approach in language translation. We also present the requirements of a real-time Quality-of-Service sign language machine translation system underpinned by accurate deep learning algorithms. Efficient Training Approaches for Performance Anomaly Detection Models in Edge Computing Environments

Microservice architectures are increasingly used to modularize IoT applications and deploy them in distributed and heterogeneous edge computing environments. Over time, these microservice-based IoT applications are susceptible to performance anomalies caused by resource hogging (e.g., CPU or memory), resource contention, etc., which can negatively impact their Quality of Service and violate their Service Level Agreements. Existing research on performance anomaly detection for edge computing environments focuses on model training approaches that either achieve high accuracy at the expense of a time-consuming and resource-intensive training process or prioritize training efficiency at the cost of lower accuracy. To address this gap, while considering the resource constraints and the large number of devices in modern edge platforms, we propose two clustering-based model training approaches: (1) intra-cluster parameter transfer learning-based model training (ICPTL) and (2) cluster-level model training (CM). These approaches aim to find a trade-off between the training efficiency of anomaly detection models and their accuracy. We compared the models trained under ICPTL and CM to models trained for specific devices (most accurate, least efficient) and a single general model trained for all devices (least accurate, most efficient). Our findings show that ICPTL's model accuracy is comparable to that of the model per device approach while requiring only 40% of the training time. In addition, CM further improves training efficiency by requiring 23% less training time and reducing the number of trained models by approximately 66% compared to ICPTL, yet achieving a higher accuracy than a single general model. Analyzing stop-and-go waves at the scale of miles and hours of data is an emerging challenge in traffic research. In the past, datasets were of limited scale and could be easily analyzed by hand or with rudimentary methods to identify a very limited set of traffic waves present within the data. The past 5 years have seen an explosion in the availability of large-scale traffic data containing traffic waves and complex congestion patterns, making existing approaches unsuitable for repeatable and scalable analysis of traffic waves in this data. This paper makes a first step towards addressing this shortcoming by introducing an automatic and scalable stop-and-go wave identification method capable of capturing wave generation, propagation, dissipation, as well as bifurcation and merging, which have previously been observed only very rarely. Using a concise and simple critical-speed based definition of a stop-and-go wave, the proposed method identifies all wave boundaries that encompass spatio-temporal points where vehicle speed is below a chosen critical speed. The method is built upon a graph-based representation of the spatio-temporal points associated with stop-and-go waves, specifically wave front (start) points and wave tail (end) points, and approaches the solution as a graph component identification problem. The method is implemented in Python and demonstrated on a large-scale dataset, I-24 MOTION INCEPTION. New insights revealed from this demonstration with emerging phenomena include: (a) we demonstrate that waves do generate, propagate, and dissipate at a scale (miles and hours) and ubiquity never observed before;(b) wave fronts and tails travels at a consistent speed for a critical speed between 10-20 mph, with propagation variation across lanes, where wave speed on the outer lane are less consistent compared to those on the inner lane;(c) wave fronts and tails propagate at different speeds;(d) wave boundaries capture rich and non-trivial wave topologies (with

This paper presents a processed phytoplankton dataset from Lake Zerendi and other Kokshetau Upland lakes, Kazakhstan. The study aimed to develop an automated method for controlling the distribution of phytoplankton in fresh open water using a gradient descent approach with the search for a starting point for research. The paper also presents the reconstructed biomass indicators for changes in water temperature, with model calibration based on results from 5 years of surface sampling. A special feature of the proposed computer data processing is the cubic spline interpolation, which allows a higher calculation accuracy. This method reduces the sample size required, providing a comprehensive picture of the condition of the infrastructure and allowing for a more efficient response to emerging ecosystem issues. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Continuous monitoring of patients involves collecting and analyzing sensory data from a multitude of sources. To overcome communication overhead, ensure data privacy and security, reduce data loss, and maintain efficient resource usage the processing and analytics are moved close to where the data is located (e.g., the Edge). Data quality (DQ) can be degraded because of imprecise or malfunctioning sensors, dynamic changes in the environment, transmission failures, or delays. Therefore, can mislead clinical judgments and cause incorrect actions, if not managed properly. In this paper, inspired by Federated Learning (FL), we propose a novel approach using Federated Data Quality (FDQ) Profiling to assess DQ at the edge considering a global quality profile aggregated based on local profiles. We conducted experiments to evaluate the effect of FDQ profiling on DQ improvement considering the assessment of outlier detection and unbalanced data. The results demonstrated that the improved DQ has a positive impact on the accuracy of four conventional machine learning models.
