Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an increasingly important role in assisting fast-response post-disaster rescue due to their fast deployment, flexible mobility, and low cost. However, UAVs face the challenges of limited battery capacity and computing resources, which could shorten the expected flight endurance of UAVs and increase the rescue response delay during performing mission-critical tasks. To address this challenge, we first present a three-layer post-disaster rescue computing architecture by leveraging the aerial-terrestrial edge capabilities of mobile edge computing (MEC) and vehicle fog computing (VFC), which consists of a vehicle fog layer, a UAV client layer, and a UAV edge layer. Moreover, we formulate a joint task offloading and resource allocation optimization problem (JTRAOP) with the aim of maximizing the time-average system utility. Since the formulated JTRAOP is proved to be NP-hard, we propose an MEC-VFC-aided task offloading and resource allocation (MVTORA) approach, which consists of a game theoretic algorithm for task offloading decision, a convex optimization-based algorithm for MEC resource allocation, and an evolutionary computation-based hybrid algorithm for VFC resource allocation. Simulation results validate that the proposed approach can achieve superior system performance compared to the other benchmark schemes, especially under heavy system workloads. Traditional data collection, storage and processing of Electronic Health Records (EHR) utilize centralized techniques that pose several risks of single point of failure and lean the systems to a number of internal and external data breaches that compromise their reliability and availability. Blockchain is an emerging distributed technology that can solve these issues due to its immutability and architectural nature that prevent records manipulation or alterations. In this paper, we discuss the progress and opportunities of remote patient monitoring using futuristic blockchain technologies and its two primary frameworks: Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric. We also discuss the possible blockchain use cases in software engineering for systematic, disciplined, and quantifiable application development. The study extends by introducing a system architecture for EHR data management using Ethereum as a model. We discuss the challenges and limitations along with the initial evaluation results of the proposed system and draw future research directions in this promising area. © 2022, CC BY.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial relays are practically appealing for assisting Internet of Things (IoT) network. In this work, we aim to utilize the UAV swarm to assist the secure communication between the micro base station (MBS) equipped with the planar array antenna (PAA) and the IoT terminal devices by collaborative beamforming (CB), so as to counteract the effects of collusive eavesdropping attacks in time-domain. Specifically, we formulate a UAV swarm-enabled secure relay multi-objective optimization problem (US2RMOP) for simultaneously maximizing the achievable sum rate of associated IoT terminal devices, minimizing the achievable sum rate of the eavesdropper and minimizing the energy consumption of UAV swarm, by jointly optimizing the excitation current weights of both MBS and UAV swarm, the selection of the UAV receiver, the position of UAVs and user association order of IoT terminal devices. Furthermore, the formulated US2RMOP is proved to be a non-convex, NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem. Therefore, we propose an improved multi-objective grasshopper algorithm (IMOGOA) with some specific designs to address the problem. Simulation results exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed UAV swarm-enabled collaborative secure relay strategy and demonstrate the superiority of IMOGOA. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type of dementia that leads to memory loss and impairment, which afects patients’ lives badly. It is not curable yet, but its progression can be slowed down if detected at earlier stages. In this research study, we propose a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model to classify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into one of four stages of Alzheimer's disease. One of the major limitations of the deep learning-based classification model is the non-availability of healthcare datasets related to AD. The widely used Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset has a major class imbalance issue. We propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based data augmentation technique to overcome the data imbalance. This promotes the investigation of applying GANs to generate synthetic samples for minority classes in Alzheimer's disease datasets to enhance classification performance. The results show the progression in the overall classification process of AD.

The goal of future quantum networks is to enable new internet applications that are impossible to achieve using solely classical communication[1, 2, 3]. Up to now, demonstrations of quantum network applications[4, 5, 6] and functionalities[7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12] on quantum processors have been performed in ad-hoc software that was specific to the experimental setup, programmed to perform one single task (the application experiment) directly into low-level control devices using expertise in experimental physics. Here, we report on the design and implementation of the first architecture capable of executing quantum network applications on quantum processors in platform-independent high-level software. We demonstrate the architecture’s capability to execute applications in high-level software, by implementing it as a quantum network operating system – QNodeOS – and executing test programs including a delegated computation from a client to a server[13] on two quantum network nodes based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond[14, 15]. We show how our architecture allows us to maximize the use of quantum network hardware, by multitasking different applications on a quantum network for the first time. Our architecture can be used to execute programs on any quantum processor platform corresponding to our system model, which we illustrate by demonstrating an additional driver for QNodeOS for a trapped-ion quantum network node based on a single 40Ca+atom[16]. Our architecture lays the groundwork for computer science research in the domain of quantum network programming, and paves the way for the development of software that can bring quantum network technology to society. Machine learning components such as deep neural networks are used extensively in Cyber-Physical systems (CPS). However, such components may introduce new types of hazards that can have disastrous consequences and need to be addressed for engineering trustworthy systems. Although deep neural networks offer advanced capabilities, they must be complemented by engineering methods and practices that allow effective integration in CPS. In this paper, we proposed an approach for assurance monitoring of learning-enabled CPS based on the conformal prediction framework. In order to allow real-time assurance monitoring, the approach employs distance learning to transform high-dimensional inputs into lower size embedding representations. By leveraging conformal prediction, the approach provides well-calibrated confidence and ensures a bounded small error rate while limiting the number of inputs for which an accurate prediction cannot be made. We demonstrate the approach using three data sets of mobile robot following a wall, speaker recognition, and traffic sign recognition. The experimental results demonstrate that the error rates are well-calibrated while the number of alarms is very small. Machine learning for education is an emerging discipline where a model is developed based on training data to make predictions on students’ performance. The main aim is to identify students who would have difficulty in their learning and to take precautionary measures to help them. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning classification models in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure, and execution time using two real-life education datasets. The performance of the models is data-driven. We give insights into the models’ performance and advise on the best model to use accordingly. Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices that are connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called "Awareness Inside", a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe that was designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems. © 2024, CC BY.

Emerging reconfigurable metasurfaces offer various possibilities in programmatically manipulating electromagnetic waves across spatial, spectral, and temporal domains, showcasing great potential for enhancing terahertz applications. However, they are hindered by limited tunability, particularly evident in relatively small phase tuning over 270o, due to the design constraints with time-intensive forward design methodologies. Here, we demonstrate a multi-bit programmable metasurface capable of terahertz beam steering, facilitated by a developed physics-informed inverse design (PIID) approach. Through integrating a modified coupled mode theory (MCMT) into residual neural networks, our PIID algorithm not only significantly increases the design accuracy compared to conventional neural networks but also elucidates the intricate physical relations between the geometry and the modes. Without decreasing the reflection intensity, our method achieves the enhanced phase tuning as large as 300o. Additionally, we experimentally validate the inverse designed programmable beam steering metasurface, which is adaptable across 1-bit, 2-bit, and tri-state coding schemes, yielding a deflection angle up to 68o and broadened steering coverage. Our demonstration provides a promising pathway for rapidly exploring advanced metasurface devices, with potentially great impact on communication and imaging technologies. © 2024, CC0.
