From sensing to energy savings: A comprehensive survey on integrating emerging technologies for energy efficiency in WBANs

Energy is essential for human existence, and its high consumption is a growing concern in today's technology-driven society. Global initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and pollution by developing and deploying energy-efficient sensing technologies for long-term monitoring, control, automation, security, and interactions. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) benefit a lot from the continuous monitoring capabilities of these sensing devices, which include medical sensors worn on or implanted in the human body for healthcare monitoring. Despite significant advancements, achieving energy efficiency in WBANs remains a significant challenge. A deep understanding of the WBAN architecture is essential to identify the causes of its energy inefficiency and develop novel energy-efficient solutions. We investigate energy efficiency issues specific to WBANs. We discuss the transformative impact that artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) can have on achieving the energy efficiency of WBANs. Additionally, we explore the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing, nano-technology, biocompatible energy harvesting, and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in enabling energy efficiency in WBANs. We focus on WBANs' architecture, hardware, and software components to identify key factors responsible for energy consumption in the WBAN environment. Based on our comprehensive review, we introduce an innovative, energy-efficient three-tier architecture for WBANs that employs ML and edge computing to overcome the limitations inherent in existing energy-efficient solutions. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and highlight future research directions that will enable the development of energy-efficient solutions for WBANs.

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, scienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Edge computing has been envisioned as an emerging and prospective computing paradigm for its advantage of low latency, which uses local resources. However, the edge resources are usually limited and could not meet end-users’ diversified requirement. Cloud computing paradigm could provide scalable and centralized resources with high computational capabilities, but it has latency issues. Thus it is suggested to combine both computing paradigms together to improve the performance of mobile applications. In this paper, we propose a self-adaptive dynamic scheduling approach based on hierarchical heterogeneous clouds. Our scheduling mechanism considers not only schedule planning but also dynamic scheduling on heterogeneous clouds. Firstly, a self-adaptive scheduling mechanism based on a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), is presented for schedule planning. Then a dynamic scheduling mechanism on dynamic partial workflow model is proposed for dynamic optimization during the execution. Finally, external experiments compared with other methods are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal. © 2020, ICST Institute for computer sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Bias-corrected peaks-over-threshold estimation of the CVaR

The conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) is a useful risk measure in fields such as machine learning, finance, insurance, energy, etc. When measuring very extreme risk, the commonly used CVaR estimation method of sample averaging does not work well due to limited data above the value-at-risk (VaR), the quantile corresponding to the CVaR level. To mitigate this problem, the CVaR can be estimated by extrapolating above a lower threshold than the VaR using a generalized Pareto distribution (GPD), which is often referred to as the peaks-over-threshold (POT) approach. This method often requires a very high threshold to fit well, leading to high variance in estimation, and can induce significant bias if the threshold is chosen too low. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the GPD approximation error of the CVaR, a bias term induced by the choice of threshold, as well as a bias correction method for the estimated GPD parameters. This leads to the derivation of a new estimator for the CVaR that we prove to be asymptotically unbiased. In a practical setting, we show through experiments that our estimator provides a significant performance improvement compared with competing CVaR estimators in finite samples. As a consequence of our bias correction method, it is also shown that a much lower threshold can be selected without introducing significant bias. This allows a larger portion of data to be be used in CVaR estimation compared with the typical POT approach, leading to more stable estimates. As secondary results, a new estimator for a second-order parameter of heavy-tailed distributions is derived, as well as a confidence interval for the CVaR which enables quantifying the level of variability in our estimator. The relationship between brain structure and function is critical for revealing the pathogenesis of brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, mapping brain structure to function connections is a very challenging task. In this work, a bidirectional graph generative adversarial network (BG-GAN) is proposed to represent brain structure-function connections. Specifically, by designing a module incorporating inner graph convolution network (InnerGCN), the generators of BG-GAN can employ features of direct and indirect brain regions to learn the mapping function between the structural domain and the functional domain. Besides, a new module named Balancer is designed to counterpoise the optimization between generators and discriminators. By introducing the Balancer into BG-GAN, both the structural generator and functional generator can not only alleviate the issue of mode collapse but also learn complementarity of structural and functional features. Experimental results using Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset show that both generated structure and function connections can improve the identification accuracy of AD. The experimental findings suggest that the relationship between brain structure and function is not a complete one-to-one correspondence. They also suggest that brain structure is the basis of brain function, and the strong structural connections are majorly accompanied by strong functional connections. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Driven by an unprecedented boom in artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), edge intelligence (EI) pushes the frontier of AI from cloud to network edge, serving as a remarkable solution that unlocks the full potential of AI services. It is yet facing critical challenges in its decentralized management and security, limiting its capabilities to support services with numerous requirements. In this context, blockchain (BC) has been seen as a promising solution to tackle the above issues, and further support EI. Based on the number of citations or the relevance of emerging methods, this paper presents the results of a literature survey on the integration of EI and BC. Accordingly, we summarize the recent research efforts reported in the existing works on EI and BC. We then paint a comprehensive picture of the limitations of EI and why BC could benefit from EI. From there, we explore how BC benefits EI in terms of computing power management, data administration, and model optimization. In order to narrow the gap between immature BC and EI-amicable BC, we also probe into how to tailor BC to EI from four perspectives, including flexible consensus protocol, effective incentive, intellectuality smart contract, and scalability. Finally, some research challenges and future directions are presented. Different from existing surveys, our work focuses on the integration of EI and BC, develops some general models to help the reader build relevant optimization models in the integrated system, as well as provides detailed tutorials on implementation. We anticipate that this survey will motivate further discussions on the synergy of EI and BC, and offer some guidance in EI, BC, future networks, and other areas. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

This paper presents the components of a newly developed Malaysian SMEs - software Process Improvement model (MSME-SPI) that can assess SMEs software development industry in managing and improving their software processes capability. The MSME-SPI is developed in response to practitioner needs that were highlighted in an empirical study with the Malaysian SME software development industry. After the model development, there is a need for independent feedback to show that the model meets its objectives. Consequently, the validation phase is performed by involving a group of software process improvement experts in examining the MSME-SPI model components. Besides, the effectiveness of the MSME-SPI model is validated using an expert panel. Three criteria were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model namely: usefulness, verifiability, and structure. The results show the model effective to be used by SMEs with minor modifications. The validation phase contributes towards a better understanding and use of the MSME-SPI model by the practitioners in the field. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Ensuring safety in smart buildings is crucial due to the increasing prevalence of smoke and fire hazards in modern environments. This paper introduces a novel privacy-preserving FL approach based on a CNN1D for smoke and fire detection in smart buildings. Our system integrates data from wearable environmental sensors to train a lightweight, edge-deployable DL-CNN1D model, ensuring data privacy while enabling collaborative learning across distributed clients using Federated Averaging (FedAvg) aggregation. Experiments conducted on a comprehensive air measurement dataset for smoke and fire detection demonstrate exceptional performance, with the global model achieving 99.97% accuracy, 99.96% precision, in smoke and fire recognition. Our model demonstrates a low communication cost of 0.4 MB, underscoring its efficiency for real-time applications. Our FL-based approach represents a significant step towards balancing the need for robust safety systems with growing privacy concerns in smart building environments.

The emergence of online enterprises spread across continents, have given rise to the need of expert identification in this domain. Scenarios that includes the intention of the employer to find tacit expertise and knowledge of an employee that is not documented or self-disclosed has been addressed in this article. The existing reputation based approaches towards expertise ranking in enterprises utilize pagerank ,normal distribution and hidden markov model for expertise ranking. These models suffer issue of negative referral, collusion ,reputation inflation and dynamism. The authors have however proposed a Bayesian approach utilizing beta probability distribution based reputation model for employee ranking in enterprises. The experimental results reveal improved performance compared to previous techniques in terms of Precision and Mean Average Error (MAE) with almost 7% improvement in precision on average for the three data sets. The proposed technique is able to differentiate categories of interactions in dynamic context. The results reveal that the technique is independent of the rating pattern and density of data.
