Intrusion detection is crucial for securing IoT networks amid the rapid proliferation of devices, posing significant security challenges. This study offers a unique intrusion detection model for IoT deep learning methods used in networks include Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), TabNet, and the Transient Search Optimization (TSO) method. The project starts by developing and evaluating distinct intrusion detection components. CNN, specializing in feature extraction, analyzes network traffic for potential intrusions. TabNet, known for interpretability and effectiveness with structured data, captures intricate relationships. The novel TSO algorithm improves the system's ability to detect temporary anomalies. Each component's performance is assessed individually, highlighting unique strengths. TabNet excels in structured IoT data pattern identification, surpassing CNN. The TSO algorithm strengthens temporary anomaly recognition, enhancing IoT network security. An ensemble technique combines CNN and TabNet predictions, reducing false positives and negatives to elevate overall detection accuracy. The ensemble, using both CNN and TabNet, achieves an impressive accuracy rate exceeding 99%, demonstrating significant gains in intrusion detection performance.

This research aims to extract knowledge of sensors behavior resorting to Bayesian networks (BNs) and dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs), a time-based BN version. These two types of models belong to the group of probabilistic graphical models (PGMs). These graphical models can be very useful to get insights from data in order to improve sensor capabilities in the industry of fire detection systems, since it can provide the conditional dependence structure among various sensor variables. Relevant sensors with fire alerts were selected and studied at device level. We conduct a data fusion analysis since we deal with heterogeneous data sources, Remote Alert (RA) with sensor states and Condition Monitoring (CM) with numerical data. To achieve an accurate fusion of the data, a pipeline was designed to align both sources of data in a regular time interval. Furthermore, a change point detection (CPD) method was used to discretize the numerical variables. In addition, one-hot encoding was used to create binarized datasets and combine all data (RA+CM). Our modeling helps understanding the dependencies among the sensor variables, highlighting that individual devices of the same type can have a very different probabilistic behavior along the time, probably due to be installed in distinct regions. Moreover, the models helped capturing strange probabilistic sensor behavior such as a low probability of a NORMAL state happening given that states FIRE, WARNING and TROUBLE did not happen. © 2022 IEEE.

Electricity consumers often face the challenge of selecting an optimal plan for saving energy. Strategic energy management and monitoring plays a key role in overcoming these challenges. Developments around Industry 5.0 powered smart grid proffers adequate solutions which allows end-consumers to monitor their energy performance towards effecting demand side recommendation services. Specific problems where end-users are likely to ignore recommended advice exists, thereby contributing to widening 'knowledge-action gap'. An ensemble of hybrid digital twins (DT) asset modelling based on ordinary differential equation (ODE) physics engine and data driven recurrent neural network (RNN) prediction approach alongside PageRank based asset behavior scoring algorithm deployed for demand side recommender and generative pre-trained transformers (GPT) based conversational chatbot technology show effectiveness in engaging and extending end-consumers interests in recommended advice. The novelty of the study lies in extending current scope of demand side recommender scheme via conversational chatbot interface for DT of electricity grid assets that better engage and monitors end-user's energy behavior while offering appropriate energy efficiency advice towards achieving energy conservation goals of smart grid consumers. Extensive experiments, including evaluation of end-user studies, revealed the effectiveness of proposed approach in terms of improved recommendation quality and user engagement towards net electricity demand reduction. © 2023 IEEE.

The next evolution of traditional energy systems towards smart grid will require end-consumers to actively participate and make informed decisions regarding their energy usage. Industry 4.0 facilitates such progress by allowing more advanced analytics and creating means for end-consumers and distributed grid assets to be modelled as their Digital twins (DT) equivalents, paving the way for asset-level analytics. Note-worthily, consumers’ comfort is crucial towards promotion of easy adoption of such models from consumers’ perspectives. This study presents the application of hybrid DT and multiagent reinforcement learning models for real-time estimation of end-consumers future energy behaviors while generating actionable recommendation feedback for improving their energy efficiency and enhancing end-user comfort. © 2023 IEEE European Union.

Traditional power system is facing challenges demanding new operational requirements to meet targets of Net Zero Emissions by 2050. Aggregators are playing progressively important role in the demand response (DR) electricity market but are often riddled with deep level of market monopoly and lack of transparency/secrecy. Emerging real-time information technology (IT) applications and novel modelling of digital twins (DT) of individual electricity assets are challenging this position by promising improvements and openness that allows TSO direct access to available demand side flexibility. Additionally, DT technologies are facilitating how demand response services are delivered to end-users by allowing individual assets participation at the atomic level. In this study, the application potentials of assets’ DT in participating in the demand response electricity market was examined. Again, an overview of DT applications for DR was conducted. The novelty of this study is highlighted in development of new approach that facilitates individual end-user assets’ contribution to demand response efforts. The research identifies key useful questions that might serve as inspiration for stakeholders and policy-makers to further close existing gaps in the field of DT, smart-grid and demand response. © 2023 European Union.

Predicting water quality is essential to preserving human health and environmental sustain ability. Traditional water quality assessment methods often face scalability and real-time monitoring limitations. With accuracies of 62%, 72 %, 83 %, 69%, 63 %, 66%, 71 %, 63 %, and 64%, respectively, the current techniques utilized were Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest Regressor, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machine, AdaBoost, and Bagging [9]. This study addresses these challenges by leveraging Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN) to balance the dataset and evaluating model performance on datasets of 5,000 and 10,000 entries per class. A robust dataset obtained from Kaggle was used, with five models - Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest - evaluated and compared. The proposed methods demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy, with XGBoost achieving the highest accuracy of 95.53%, followed by Random Forest at 93.98%. This work underscores the importance of advanced machine learning techniques in addressing the limitations of traditional methods, enhancing accuracy, scalability, and adaptability in water quality prediction. These findings contribute to advancing environmental monitoring and management practices with reliable, data-driven insights.

Automatic programming has seen increasing popularity due to the emergence of tools like GitHub Copilot which rely on Large language Models (LLMs). At the same time, automatically generated code faces challenges during deployment due to concerns around quality and trust. In this article, we study automated coding in a general sense and study the concerns around code quality, security, and related issues of programmer responsibility. These are key issues for organizations while deciding on the usage of automatically generated code. We discuss how advances in software engineering such as program repair and analysis can enable automatic programming. We conclude with a forward looking view, focusing on the programming environment of the near future, where programmers may need to switch to different roles to fully utilize the power of automatic programming. Automated repair of automatically generated programs from LLMs can help produce higher assurance code from LLMs, along with evidence of assurance. © 2025 Association for Computing Machinery.
