This paper focuses on the development of service-oriented information systems. One of the main challenges facing service-oriented computing is providing methodologies that support the specification and design of IS behavior, and allowing software engineers to move from the earlier stages of business analysis to its final step of implementation. Model Driven approaches provide with models, transformations between them and code generators to address software development. This kind of approaches provides a conceptual structure that brings together diagrams used by business managers and analysts and those used by software developers, and is capable of organizing them in such a way that the requirements specified in one diagram can be traced through more detailed derived ones. In this paper we present a Model Driven approach which deals with the alignment between high level business models (the business view) and behavioural models of the service-oriented information system (the information system view). The work presents, by means of a case study, models proposed for modeling both, the views and model transformation between them.

Developing security-critical applications is very difficult and the past has shown that many applications turned out to be erroneous after years of usage. For this reason it is desirable to have a sound methodology for developing security-critical E-Commerce applications. We present an approach to model these applications with the unified modeling language (UML) [1] extended by a UML profile to tailor our models to security applications. Our intent is to (semi-) automatically generate a formal specification suitable for verification as well as an implementation from the model. Therefore we offer a development method seamlessly integrating semi-formal and formal methods as well as the implementation. This is a significant advantage compared to other approaches not dealing with all aspects from abstract models down to code. Based on this approach we can prove security properties on the abstract protocol level as well as the correctness of the protocol implementation in Java with respect to the formal model using the refinement approach. In this paper we concentrate on the modeling with UML and some details regarding the transformation of this model into the formal specification. We illustrate our approach on an electronic payment system called Mondex [10]. Mondex has become famous for being the target of the first ITSEC evaluation of the highest level E6 which requires formal specification and verification. © 2007 IEEE.

The CoBRA grid: A highly configurable lightweight grid

In this paper, a new multipurpose Lightweight Grid (LWG) system is introduced, under the acronym Computational Basic Reprogrammable Adaptive (CoBRA) grid. It provides the functionality grid users require, and offers grid developers the opportunity to test and alter grid components while the grid is in use. The grid was proven to operate properly by testing several applications and introducing new components. Its performance was tested by the 'sleep testing technique', and by implementing a quantum physics calculation. The user friendliness was also evaluated with the latter distributed computational problem. The possibility to port the system onto well-established systems like CONDOR and Globus is also discussed. On optimising shape-generic array programs using symbolic structural information

Shape-generic programming and high run time performance do match if generic source code is systematically specialised into nongeneric executable code. However, as soon as we drop the assumption of whole-world knowledge or refrain from specialisation for other reasons, compiled generic code is substantially less efficient. Limited effectiveness of code optimisation techniques due to the inherent lack of knowledge about the structural properties of arrays can be identified as the single most important source of inefficiency. However, in many cases partial structural information or structural relationships between arrays would actually suffice for optimisation. We propose symbolic array attributes as a uniform scheme to infer and to represent partial and relational structural information in shape-generic array code. By reusing the regular language to express structural properties in intermediate code, existing optimisations benefit from symbolic array attributes with little or no alteration. In fact, program optimisation and identification of structural properties cross-fertilise each other. We outline our approach in the context of the functional array language SAC and demonstrate its effectiveness by a small case study. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Experimenters in biomedical image processing rely on software libraries to provide a large number of standard filtering and image handling algorithms. The Insight Toolkit (ITK) is an open-source library that provides a complete framework for a range of image processing tasks, and is specifically aimed at segmentation and registration tasks for both two and three dimensional images. This paper describes a visual dataflow language, ITKBoard, designed to simplify building, and more significantly, experimenting with ITK applications. The ease with which image processing experiments can be interactively modified and controlled is an important aspect of the design. The experimenter can focus on the image processing task at hand, rather than worry about the underlying software. ITKBoard incorporates composite and parameterised components, and control constructs, and relies on a novel hybrid dataflow model, combining aspects of both demand and data-driven execution.

The JastAdd Extensible Java Compiler is a high quality Java that is easy to extend in order to build static analysis for Java, and to extend Java with new language constructs. built modularly, with a Java 1.4 compiler that is to a Java 5 compiler. Example applications that are as extensions include an alternative backend that generates, an extension of Java with AspectJ constructs, the implementation of a pluggable type system for nonnull and inference. system is implemented using JastAdd, a declarative like language. We describe the compiler architecture, major design ideas for building and extending the compiler, particular, for dealing with complex extensions that name and type analysis. Our extensible compiler compares favorably concerning quality, speed and size with extensible Java compiler frameworks. It also compares in quality and size compared with traditional nonextensible compilers, and it runs within a factor of three compared to javac. © 2007 ACM.

Data tiling is an array layout transformation technique that partitions an array into smaller subarray blocks. It was originally proposed to improve the cache performance of regular loops. Recently, researchers have applied this technique to scratchpad memory (SPM) allocation. Arrays whose sizes exceed a given SPM size can be tiled or divided into smaller subarray blocks or tiles and the program performance can be significantly improved by placing the smaller subarray tiles in SPM. Existing data tiling techniques are applicable to regularly-accessed arrays in individual loop nests. In embedded applications, arrays are often accessed in multiple loop nests via possibly aliased pointers. Tiling arrays in a loop nest alone will often affect the tiling and allocation decisions for arrays accessed in other loop nests. Moreover, tiling arrays accessed via aliased pointers is difficult since their access patterns are unknown at compile time. This paper presents a new data tiling approach to address these practical issues. We perform alias profiling to detect the most likely memory access patterns and use an ILP solver to select the best tiling schemes for all loop nests in the program as a whole. We have integrated data tiling in an existing SPM allocation framework. Our preliminary experimental results show that our approach can improve significantly the performance of a set of programs selected from the Mediabench suite. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The advent of multicore processors has raised new demand for harnessing concurrency in the software mass market. We summarise our previous work on the data parallel, functional array processing language SaC. Its compiler technology is geared towards highly runtime-efficient support for shared memory multiprocessors and, thus, is readily applicable to today's off-the-shelf multicore systems.
