Self-directed learners’ perceptions and experiences of learning computer science through MIT open courseware

Given the rapid rise of open educational resources (OER) for informal learning pursuits impacting countless millions of people each day around the world, this study investigated the impact of the initiative that spearheaded this movement;namely, Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) open courseware (OCW). More specifically, it explored self-directed learners’ perceptions of the impact of the MIT OCW, their social presences and cognitive presences while learning through MIT OCW online instructional videos. The data source of this study was learner comments regarding 23 instructional videos found in YouTube. Thematic analysis and computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) were used for data analysis. The results indicated that the impact of the MIT OCW served as the first step for career development and important educational decisions of myriad learners that served to benefit MIT programmes with future applicants. In addition, YouTube comments of the self-directed learners reflected a relatively lower social presence and higher cognitive presence compared to general social media. Meanwhile, self-directed learners encountered challenges such as technology issues, non-engaging teaching methods, and social learning needs. Perhaps the future OER and OCW development will, in fact, be designed for a more interactive and engaging experience for the self-directed learners of this world. © 2020 The Open University.

The development of critical thinking, creativity, and communication abilities is facilitated by the acquisition of writing skills, which are significant for students. Nevertheless, a considerable number of students presently encounter difficulties in locating the impetus and enthusiasm required for engagement in writing endeavors. The focus of the present paper is application design. The VBee application is a web-based application that facilitates the expression of user creativity and fosters a deeper appreciation for the art of writing. The application boasts a highly intuitive interface that effortlessly enables users to document their thoughts and experiences. It offers a plethora of features that not only facilitate writing but also foster self-expression, including customizable emoticons and the option to provide feedback. By designing the application, it could help support vocational school students in improving the quality of skill-focused education, particularly their English creative writing skill in enjoyment. Besides, the teachers are assisted to guide their students with technologically advanced and entertaining learning tools. © 2023 IEEE.

Image segmentation is an essential component in many different types of computer vision systems. Image segmentation is used in order to identify objects and boundaries within pictures. It is important to note that the success of recognition algorithms is heavily dependent on the quality of the picture segmentation, and there is yet no technique that can universally segment images. Boundary detection has a long history of being recognised as one of the most difficult challenges in the fields of image processing and pattern analysis, in particular, when it comes to applications in medical imaging. The clarity of the picture is being muddled by more information, which is the source of the problem's complexity. The creation of segmentation algorithms for medical pictures is an active field of study, and segmentation algorithms are meant to account for a variety of factors, including noise, intensity inhomogeneity, poor contrast between the lesion and the surrounding skin, and so on. There is currently no active contour model that combines the locally statistical property of being more noise-resistant, in which the intensities in the transformed domain have less overlapping in the statistics, and the locally image fitting property of extracting the local image information in order to be able to segment images with intensity inhomogeneity. This is because there is no such model. So the proposed work includes Ant colony optimization based double threshold segmentation in medical images. Performance of the proposed algorithm is more efficient, reliable and accurate than the existing algorithm. Performance parameters such as segmentation accuracy, error rate, and Dice co-efficient are used in order to conduct the evaluation of the proposed work. © 2022 IEEE.

Stimulated Recall (SR) has long been used in educational settings as an approach of retrospection. However, with the fast growing of digital learning and advanced technologies in educational settings over the past decade, the extent to which stimulated recall has been effectively implemented by researchers remains minimal. This systematic review reveals that SR has been primarily employed to probe the patterns of participants’ thinking, to examine the effects of instructional strategies, and to promote metacognitive level. Notably, SR video stimuli have advanced, and the sources of stimuli have become more diverse, including the incorporation of physiological data. Additionally, researchers have applied various strategies, such as flexible intervals and questioning techniques, in SR interviews. Furthermore, this article discusses the relationships between different SR research items, including stimuli and learning contexts. The review and analysis also demonstrate that stimulated recall may be further enhanced by integrating multiple data sources, applying intelligent algorithms, and incorporating conversational agents enabled by generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of SR studies in the realm of education and proposes a promising avenue for researchers to proactively apply stimulated recall in investigating educational issues in the digital era. © The Author(s) 2024.

Despite decades of research exploring augmented reality in a variety of contexts, there have been very few studies exploring the use of commercially available components and a software development kit that is user-friendly for novices. Nearly all previous research has focused on applications that require extensive programming knowledge and experience. This trend makes the utilization of research findings in real-life settings impossible for those without in-depth training in computer science. In this paper, we report the results of an experiment with automotive technician trainees comparing a mobile application built with a user-friendly commercially available software development kit to a non-augmented computer-based manual. Results indicated that the augmented reality application enabled trainees to locate parts more quickly and accurately than when using the computer-based manual. These encouraging results are part of a larger study exploring the costs and potential benefits of augmented reality and mobile technologies in automotive technician training. © 2018 IEEE.

Dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases pose significant public health threats, often exacerbated by limitations in traditional control methods. This study introduces a novel, low-cost, and easy-to-manage all-life-cycle ovitrap (ALO), designed specifically for Aedes aegypti control, offering a sustainable, pesticide-free alternative to chemical spraying. The ALO features a self-replicating design for local production and requires minimal maintenance for long-term mosquito surveillance. Comparing the ALO to standard ovitraps (SOs) and larval traps (LVTs) in field tests, the ALO demonstrated comparable attractiveness to gravid females as the SO, significantly outperforming the LVT. Two ALO models, F9 and F14, utilizing 9 cm and 14 cm funnels, respectively, attracted 100% of gravid Ae. aegypti females, with F14 capturing 2.4 times more larvae than F9. Laboratory tests demonstrated high trapping efficacy of 98.94%–99.28% and a 21.71% reduction in larval populations compared to controls. Notably, a significant negative correlation was observed between rainfall and larvae counts, suggesting the ovitrap efficacy. These findings suggest the novel ovitraps offer a promising, effective approach for controlling Ae. aegypti populations, ultimately contributing to the reduction of Aedes -borne disease transmission.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.
