Since 2009, the Mortenson Center in Global engineering & Resilience has been training global engineers to improve the lives of vulnerable people through technological innovation, forming global partnerships, enacting policy changes, and humanitarian service. In 2021, The Mortenson Center hosted over 100 participants from universities, donors, government agencies, and industry partners for a virtual workshop series as part of a National Science Foundation grant to advance engineering education. Together, that group established a comprehensive global engineering body of knowledge. The paper Aligning learning objectives and approaches in global engineering graduate programs: Review and recommendations by an interdisciplinary working group were recently published in Development engineering.

The Transport Airplane Risk Assessment Methodology (TARAM) is a process for calculating risk associated with continued operational safety (COS) issues in the U.S. transport airplane fleet. TARAM is important because its risk-analysis calculations are used when making determinations of unsafe conditions in transport airplanes, and when selecting and implementing corrective actions. TARAM is used by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for risk analysis and risk management decisions regarding COS. Aircraft certification offices use it to resolve COS issues for transport category airplanes. This methodology is also used by design approval holders, in whole or in part, by agreement with the applicable aircraft certification office. The goal of this study is to assess the TARAM process used by the FAA. Including a systematic risk assessment methodology in the continued operational safety analysis is important for a comprehensive approach to the overall safety of the transport airplane fleet. TARAM is an initial attempt by the FAA to fill such a role. A healthy safety culture requires commitment to continuous improvement. This report provides recommendations to the FAA to address the gaps and strengthen the TARAM. © 2022 Probabilistic Safety Assessment and management, PSAM 2022. All rights reserved.

Tactical aircraft operations in a high-threat, hostile environment require an internal weapon carriage capability that supports stealth operations while ensuring aircrew survivability and mission success. Once the threats have been reduced, a multirole, increased external carriage capability is then required to prosecute an expanded target set. The F-35 meets both roles with internal carriage of air-to-air and air-to-surface stores. It has a robust external carriage capability of multirole stores, an internal 25-millimeter Gatling gun for the F-35A, and a missionized 25-millimeter gun pod for the F-35B and F-35C. It also has a stores management system designed to control current and future store interfaces. The F-35 weapon carriage design is based on experience gained from developing our successful 4th Generation F-16 and 5th Generation F-22 fighter aircraft. The design is highly common across the three F-35 variants and provides interoperability and operational flexibility to the theater commanders to engage a wide array of targets. This paper describes the weapons requirements, design development, evolution, and trades performed to define and mature the weapon carriage layout. Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and The Boeing Company are teamed to execute a series of Technology Investment Agreements (TIA) for the JMR TD (Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator) program. The capabilities of JMR TD will include combinations of ambient condition hover, speed, range, fuel efficiencies and trooplpayload capacities beyond any current rotorcraft. The JMR TD program addresses the technical risks associated with meeting many of the requirements for the FVL CS3 (Future Vertical Lift Capability Set 3) aircraft. Our team's joint multi-role cooperative efforts provide unrivalled state-of-the-art design and analytical modeling practices leading to advanced vertical flight technologies for the FVL CS3 1 JMR TD program. BEST business excellence addresses the issue of excellence and sustainability from four perspectives: bio/physical, economic, social, and technological. The concept of BEST business excellence seeks to address the balance of objectives that many academics and practitioners alike believe are necessary, perhaps not sufficient, to secure the longterm survival, prosperity, and thriving of humankind and its institutions. Somewhat allied with triple bottom line, this concept is in its infancy and little work has been completed in the formation of the concept intuitively or formally. This paper begins a discourse to develop an optimization model for the concept of BEST business excellence. The models presented herein are graphical and descriptive and offer a basis for further development. These models represent the transformation from maximizing economic outcomes as the organizational objective constrained by Bsustainability (bio/physical) largely through regulation, Ssustainability (social) largely through a sense of obligation or by consumer action, and Tsustainability (technology) largely through the limitations of current technology available. The new model offers the different perspective of the objective function containing variables representing B, E, and Ssustainability, wherein those objectives are jointly optimised using technology (Tsustainability) where cost becomes the constraint. The resultant descriptive model shows how technology forms the centerpiece of optimization and provides direction for technological development resulting in simultaneous optimization of bio/physical, economic, and social objectives. © 2002, MCB UP Limited

The social architecture within the organization is best described as a university of shared realities, which contributes to a uniqueness of behavior expectations. People, who make up this structure, collectively provide value systems that help self and other organizational members understand what the organization holds as important. It also provides a basis for personal decision-making and behavior. Establishing knowledge processes in this regard would help to teach members of the organizations about what they should expect from others and what is likely expected from them. Sustaining this type of shared belief system requires the unconditional dissemination of information. One of the barriers in developing such knowledge processes for this type of system is that the social architecture in most organizations does not accommodate the unconditional dissemination of information. Since the implementation of modern information technology is changing the workplace and the nature of work itself, alternative social structures guided by these information technologies are needed. Using the classroom as a laboratory for addressing organizational social structure development, technology, and knowledge processes, students taking a course addressing behavioral issues for engineers provided a scenario-some true, some perceived of what they face in the organization and what they believe needs attention by everyone affected.

Formed in late 1998, the Multinational Alliance for the Advancement of Organisational Excellence (MAAOE) sustains the vision of creating, disseminating, and applying knowledge relevant to the advancement of organizational excellence. MAAOE advances next-generation quality management characterized by multinational, multidisciplinary, and performance focused. Presently numbering over 300 individuals representing a diverse group of disciplinary backgrounds and representing more than 20 nations on 6 continents, the alliance's participant group is consistent with that vision. Supporting MAAOE visions are three strategic intentions, each with several supporting goals and objectives. This article investigates and establishes MAAOE's second strategic intention, that of the knowledge dissemination relevant to the advancement of organizational excellence.

A case for engineering edutainment in the 21st century

The economic future of the United States depends upon our continued leadership in the development of high technology products and services. Development of such products requires a robust engineering workforce. Unfortunately, current economic, market, employment, demographic, and education trends suggest erosion of America's global engineering leadership. A definition of engineering edutainment is developed. Reasons why some educators are dismayed by the concept of edutainment are discussed. A call is made for engineering edutainment that spans almost all U.S. demographic groups from cradle to grave. This holistic approach is offered as a critical underpinning for the foundation of the engineering workforce of the next century. It is put forth that the holistic approach is best accomplished through alliances including engineering faculty, K-12 educators, and practitioners from industry. Finally, guidelines to avoid the pitfalls of edutainment are provided.

The objective of this investigation is to improve the planning, selection, and justification of information technology (IT) projects as a vehicle for business enhancement. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) criteria are used herein as a framework for strategic planning of information technology implementation. Research findings suggest that application of these criteria in isolation is not sufficient for planning and evaluating information technology initiatives. However, consideration of these criteria in the form of a post-planning audit has the potential to improve the strategic relevance of the information technology deployment plan. Finally, the prominent role that computer security plays in much of the current IT literature, combined with a lack of consideration for intellectual property management in the MBNQA criteria, suggest that this is a key shortcoming of the MBNQA, not only in the context of IT planning, but also in the broader context of a business assessment tool.
