We perform an empirical study to analyze whether it would be beneficial for a company to switch from traditional procurement system to e-procurement system. For this purpose, we determine the main barriers and benefits of e-procurement systems, and using Structural Equation Modeling, we analyze the effects of the barriers and benefits on the e-procurement adoption decision. The results denote that barriers (benefits) of e-procurement systems have negative (positive) effect on the adoption decision. We also find that the effect of the benefits is higher than that of the barriers, indicating that it would be beneficial for the company to adopt the e-procurement system. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In an integrated feed swine company, the firm engages in weekly planning of feed logistics to ensure the proper growth and health conditions for the pigs, taking into account constraining factors, such as farm feed inventory, inventory policy, and the warehouse capacities of individual farms, as well as other logistical constraints. This process becomes a more complicated task as the number of farms rises. The studied problem was a case of multiple feed mills, multiple farms, and multiple products, which resembles a multi-facility, multi customer, and multi-product case. Database management coupled with a mathematical modeling method is proposed to cope with the industrial-scale feed production-distribution planning and to determine the most suitable feed delivery cycle, number of trucks used, feed order quantities for individual farms, and production batch size of the feed mill such that the cost from mill to feed is minimized. The performance of heuristic solution approaches has been assessed. The solutions from the proposed heuristic algorithm were shown to slightly deviate from the optimal solution but the computational time declined dramatically. In addition to the efficiency gained from the optimization framework, the database-centric feed demand estimation likewise enabled an accurate feed demand, taking into account pig health and growth conditions, as well as other necessary input factors for the model. The overall decision-support system works interactively with the optimization model and shows promise when applied to real industrial problems. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

As the number of using 3PL providers are increasing rapidly in recent years, 3PL providers play a major role in the logistics industry. Due to customers demands are raising and changing, it has facilitated 3PL providers to invest IT systems that could meet customer requirements and create competitive advantage. The use of IT systems could assist 3PL providers to achieve supply chain visibility and enhance supply chain collaboration with business partners. In this paper, it is mainly focus on the Europe and Far East 3PL providers in terms of current and future IT systems, IT motivators and barriers, as well as the future supply chain demands that address by IT systems. The common IT system that implemented in both regions is information technology, which is mainly used to collaborate and share information with supply chain partners. Some of the common motivations and barriers were existed and 3PL providers need to be understood. Given the future demands of IT implementation and supply chain collaboration, IT systems such as RFID and integration systems would be strongly focus in the future. The suggestion about the advanced integration system such as business process management (BPM) could be the next key IT systems in the future logistics industry. © 2012 AICIT.

Stockman or farmers always have difficulty recognition of pig mass in their farms. The typical approach is to approximate from age of pigs, daily-given feed, or from experience of human vision. Another practical approach to instantly measure mass of pigs is to use machine vision. The objective of this paper is to use a developed machine vision to analyze pig mass for detection of size and weight of pigs in farm. The pig mass is processed from physical features captured from digital image and their liveweights are approximated from artificial neural network. This neural network model is based on vector-quantized temporal associative memory (VQTAM) and locally linear embedding (LLE). The elementary results showed that the mass approximation of pig weight had acceptable accuracy and it was practical in pig farms.

Product innovations, accelerated product life cycles, globalization, and increased customer requirements are challenges of the automotive industry today. Original equipment manufacturers face these challenges in offering multiple models, derivates, and options that affect the efficiency of processes and resources in logistics systems. To provide transparency over product variety-induced complexity, individual product variants, product variety and their impacts on logistics costs and performance need to be linked. Against this background, the authors develop an evaluation method to quantify these impacts focusing on the automotive logistics. This research provides a structured framework to account for impacts caused by product variety in order to support product variety decisions at an early stage in the product design phase. The method identifies relevant influences for measuring variant-driven complexity in logistics and highlights reciprocal effects among product variety, logistics costs and logistics performance. By integrating different logistics resources as well as dynamic factors, the research provides a unique evaluation approach in automotive logistics. Furthermore, the authors provide a case study proving the practicability.

Traditional costing methods with their overemphasis on short term saving in direct manufacturing and operating costs cause to overlook big savings which are not clearly explicit and may not be directly quantified into monetary terms. This causes the project of coordinating and establishing the supply chain fails to come up to expectations. This paper proposed a classification of costs in supply chain by classifying direct visible costs and hidden opportunity costs. It used an idea of the process costing and Activity-based Costing (ABC) by grouping various costs into their cost centers. With the proposed classification of supply chain costs, a company would be able to quantify the hidden benefits and their savings if they choose to join and coordinate in the chain in which these savings would be ignored and overlooked by the traditional costing methods. ©2010 IEEE.

The hypothesis of this paper is that one of the reasons why logistics is poorly managed in the Finnish construction industry is that we try to tailor it too much on a project level and to standardize too little on a corporate level. Depending on various studies the logistics cost is between 10-30% of construction cost. There are many reports, which claim that there is significant amount of waste such as excess inventory, movement of material, and damage related to logistics. In addition, there are many success stories how logistics has been improved on a project. However, even though the opportunities are huge and good practices have been identified, the majority of construction projects in Finland manage logistics poorly. The question is why? The paper is based on empirical studies from the last five years from a single company. Around 180 projects, some more and some less actively, have been involved. With the help of three cases we present three logistics solutions and how their implementation has progressed. The first case is a customized solution for one project, where engineered-to-order supply chains are made transparent with the help of Building Information Modeling and RFID tags in order to increase delivery reliability. The second case is a "corporate" level solution for managing small make-to-stock items with the help of Vendor Managed Inventory. The third case is a "corporate" level solution to manage make-to-order and large make-to-stock items with the help of a terminal (logistics center) in order to increase site productivity. All three cases were successful pilot projects, but only the last two have we been able to be more widely implemented in the company. The paper discusses why and comes to the conclusion that there are at least two main obstacles that have earlier prevented or slowed down a wider implementation of good practices. ROUTE 2007, an International Workshop on Vehicle Routing, Intermodal Transport, and Related Areas, which was held on South Georgia, from 14th to 16th May has been presented. The workshop was supported by The supply chain and logistics Institute and the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and systems engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and was the fourth in the ROUTE series. The workshop was designed to provide a forum for scientific exchange and cooperation in the fields of vehicle routing and intermodal transportation, and brought together about 40 prominent scholars to discuss research trends and their most recent and relevant work. A computational study based on data from a beverage distributor demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed fixed routing system and the route construction techniques.
