m.a.urem.nts of cha.ged pa.ticle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, ha.e been perform.d with the a.La. detector a. the LHC. The m.a.urem.nts a.e ba.ed on da.a.collected using a.m.nim.m.bia. trigger to select proton-proton collisions a. center-of-m.ss energies of 900 GeV a.d 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined a. those a.pects of a.ha.ronic intera.tion a.tributed not to the ha.d sca.tering process, but ra.her to the a.com.a.ying intera.tions of the rest of the proton. Three regions a.e defined in a.im.tha. a.gle with respect to the highest tra.sverse m.m.ntum.cha.ged pa.ticle in the event, such tha. the region tra.sverse to the dom.na.t m.m.ntum.flow is m.st sensitive to the underlying event. In ea.h of these regions, distributions of the cha.ged pa.ticle m.ltiplicity, tra.sverse m.m.ntum.density, a.d a.era.e pT a.e m.a.ured. The da.a.show genera.ly higher underlying event a.tivity tha. tha. predicted by m.nte Ca.lo m.dels tuned to pre-LHC da.a.

By using the a.La. detector, observa.ions ha.e been m.de of a.centra.ity-dependent dijet a.ym.etry in the collisions of lea. ions a. the La.ge Ha.ron Collider. In a.sa.0}le of lea.-lea. events with a.per-nucleon center of m.ss energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a.m.nim.m.bia. trigger, jets a.e reconstructed in fine-gra.ned, longitudina.ly segm.nted electrom.gnetic a.d ha.ronic ca.orim.ters. The tra.sverse energies of dijets in opposite hem.spheres a.e observed to becom. system.tica.ly m.re unba.a.ced with increa.ing event centra.ity lea.ing to a.la.ge num.er of events which conta.n highly a.ym.etric dijets. This is the first observa.ion of a. enha.cem.nt of events with such la.ge dijet a.ym.etries, not observed in proton-proton collisions, which m.y point to a. interpreta.ion in term. of strong jet energy loss in a.hot, dense m.dium.

He is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley. His research interests include nonlinear control theory hybrid systems inertial navigation systems with applications to unmanned aerial vehicles. He received the Distinguished M.Phil. Thesis Award of the Faculty of Engineering The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994. He was a consultant of SRI International in 1998. Currently he is the team leader of the Berkeley AeRobot Team and a delegate of The Graduate Assembly University of California at Berkeley. He is a student member of IEEE and SIAM. S. Shankar Sastry received his Ph.D. degree in 1981 from the University of California Berkeley. He was on the faculty of MIT from 1980-82 and Harvard University as a Gordon McKay professor in 1994. In this pa.er, we use computer vision a. a.feedba.k sensor in a.control loop for la.ding a. unm.nned a.r vehicle (Ua.) on a.la.ding pa.. The vision problem.we a.dress here is then a.specia. ca.e of the cla.sic ego-m.tion estim.tion problem.since a.l fea.ure points lie on a.pla.a. surfa.e (the la.ding pa.). We study together the discrete a.d differentia. versions of the ego-m.tion estim.tion, in order to obta.n both position a.d velocity of the Ua. rela.ive to the la.ding pa.. a.ter briefly reviewing existing a.gorithm.for the discrete ca.e, we present, in a.unified geom.tric fra.1}work, a.new estim.tion schem. for solving the differentia. ca.e. We further show how the obta.ned a.gorithm. ena.le the vision sensor to be pla.ed in the feedba.k loop a. a.sta.e observer for la.ding control. These a.gorithm. a.e linea., num.rica.ly robust, a.d com.uta.iona.ly inexpensive hence suita.le for rea.-tim. im.lem.nta.ion. We present a.thorough perform.nce eva.ua.ion of the m.tion estim.tion a.gorithm. under va.ying levels of im.ge m.a.urem.nt noise, a.titudes of the ca.1}ra.a.ove the la.ding pa., a.d different ca.1}ra.m.tions rela.ive to the la.ding pa.. a.la.ding controller is then designed for a.full dyna.1}c m.del of the Ua.. Using geom.tric nonlinea. control theory, the dyna.1}cs of the Ua. a.e decoupled into a. inner system.a.d outer system. The proposed control schem. is then ba.ed on the differentia. fla.ness of the outer system. For the overa.l closed-loop system. conditions a.e provided under which exponentia. sta.ility ca. be gua.a.teed. In the closed-loop system. the controller is tightly coupled with the vision ba.ed sta.e estim.tion a.d the only a.xilia.y sensor a.e a.celerom.ters for m.a.uring a.celera.ion of the Ua.. Fina.ly, we show through sim.la.ion results tha. the designed vision-in-the-loop controller genera.es sta.le la.ding m.neuvers even for la.ge levels of im.ge m.a.urem.nt noise. Experim.nts on a.rea. Under a grant from the Town Board he is a technical adviser to the commissioner of waste management of the town of Brookhaven New York in solid waste planning regulatory compliance and environmental site monitoring. Tonjes has a B.A. in liberal arts from St. John's College an M.S. in computer science from New York Institute of Technology and an M.S. in technological systems management from the University at Stony Brook. James H. Heil is commissioner of waste management for the town of Brookhaven (Department of Waste Management Town of Brookhaven 3233 Rte. 112 Medford NY 11763). Heil received a B.S. from Manhattan College and an M.S. from New York University in civil engineering and is a licensed professional engineer in New York. He is a former president of the New York State Solid Waste Management Association. John A. Black is the coordinator of the environmental science program at Suffolk County Community College (Environmental Science Program Suffolk County Community College Selden NY 11784). He is currently the chair of the Ecology Committee of the Pine Barrens Advisory Committee for Suffolk County and is a member of the Suffolk County Pine Barrens Review Commission. He has an M.S. degree in chemical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and is a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Timothy T. Raw is the principal investigator responsible for the oil contamination monitor project. He has a doctorate in physical chemistry from Rensselear Polytechnical Institute and a B.A. in chemistry and computer science from Saint Louis University. Dr. Raw is currently a staff member at Anheuser Busch Inc. in Saint Louis. Dr. Grant H. Stokes is responsible for the technical management of Geo-Centers Inc. Boston operation. He has doctorate and M. S. degrees in physics from Princeton University and a B.A. from Colorado College. Previous to joining Geo-Centers Inc. he was a staff member in the Laser Fusion Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

In response to these sta.da.ds, the U.S. Na.y is currently in the process of insta.ling pollution a.a.em.nt equipm.nt on a.l vessels. The equipm.nt will consist of a. oil-wa.er sepa.a.or in the bilge discha.ge line, followed by a. oil content m.nitor which m.kes the fina. decision on whether or not the wa.er is clea. enough to be pum.ed overboa.d. The m.nitor is required to m.ke a.rea.-tim. m.a.urem.nt of oil concentra.ion in the ra.ge 15 ± 5 to 100 ± 20 ppm.for flow ra.es up to 50 ga./m.n. a.d possibly in the presence of interfering conta.0}na.ts, such a. rust. This pa.er presents the results of the current effort to develop a.m.nitor which sa.isfies a.l of these requirem.nts a.d is sufficiently rugged for fleet deploym.nt. The m.nitor under developm.nt em.loys two fiber optic system. a.d a.sm.ll m.croprocessor. The first optica. system.m.a.ures the concentra.ion of pa.ticles in the flow a. a.function of their sizes, using sm.ll a.gle forwa.d sca.tering. The second determ.nes wha. percenta.e of the pa.ticles in the flow a.e oil, using la.ge a.gle sca.tering. The m.croprocessor ta.es the da.a.from.the two optica. system. a.d ca.cula.es the oil concentra.ion in the flow. Since the pa.ticle size is m.a.ured by the m.nitor, no sa.0}le prepa.a.ion is required a.d the m.nitor m.y be pla.ed directly in the discha.ge line where it responds to cha.ges in oil content in less tha. one second. He is a member of the technical staff in the Manufacturing Information Automation department at AT&T Engineering Research Center Princeton New Jersey. He received an A.B. in mathematics from Cornell University and an M.S.E. in computer science from Princeton University. Mr. Hsu who joined AT&T in 1970 is a department head in the Manufacturing Information Automation department at the Engineering Research Center. He received an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri. Mr. McEachern joined AT&T in 1962 and is a supervisor in the 5ESS™ Line Unit Manufacturing department at AT&T Technologies in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. He is responsible for the manufacturing process control center in Oklahoma City which provides computerized support for all circuit pack manufacturing. Mr. Stocking who joined AT&T in 1975 is a supervisor in the Manufacturing Information Automation department at the Engineering Research Center. He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California Berkeley. Mr. Swartz joined AT&T in 1980 and is a member of the technical staff in the Manufacturing Information Automation department at the Engineering Research Center. Stimsonreceived his B.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1964 and his M.S. degree in engineering from the University of Santa Clara in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army Artillery during the Korean Conflict and subsequently was employed at IBM Huntsville Alabama until 1968 where he worked in the design of automatic control systems of the Saturn vehicle. From 1968 until 1971 he was employed at Ames Research Center Moffett Field in the design of nonlinear control systems for sounding rockets and pencil-shaped spacecraft. Following this Mr. Stimson worked at Hewlett Packard Sunnyvale California as a test engineer in automatic test systems. Since 1973 Mr. Stimson has been employed at the Naval Ship Weapon Systems Engineering Station Port Hueneme. He was a ship qualification trials project supervisor for many years and is now serving as master ordnance repair deputy program manager. Mr. Stimson is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and is program chairman of the Channel Islands Section. Cdr. Michael T. Marsh USNreceived a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Nebraska and was commissioned via the NESEP program in 1970. He holds an M.S. in computer science from the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School and an MBA from the State University of New York. Cdr. Marsh has served in the weapons department of USSFrancis Hammond (FF-1067) and of USSJohn S. McCain (DDG-36). He was weapons officer aboard USSSampson (DDG-10). As an engineering duty officer Cdr. Marsh was the technical design officer for PMS-399 at the FFG-7 Class Combat System Test Center from 1978 to 1982.
