This panel will discuss a recom.endation for curricula guidelines for courses about m.ltim.dia. Based on conference input, the guidelines will be m.dified for review prior to future publication by ACm.(with other groups). The recom.endation will be one of the m.in results of a June 2000 Dagstuhl workshop led by 4 of the panelists. Dr. Heller, the 5th panelist, also attended that workshop, and is co-PI with the panel m.derator on a directly related NSF project, Curriculum.Resources in Interactive m.ltim.dia, CRIm. see http://***/~crim. Each of the panelists has taught courses about m.ltim.dia. Each is interested in developing tools/dem.nstrations/resources to help in those course. Each has a particular area of interest in the m.ltim.dia field. Together they constitute a representative group am.ng those who will contribute to and benefit from.curricula resources in m.ltim.dia.

In this paper, we describe optim.l and asym.totically optim.l em.eddings of κ-nom.al trees into 2-D and 3-D m.shes with worm.ole routing. We consider both em.eddings that ignore dim.nsion-order routing and em.eddings that m.p tree edges only to paths conform.ng to the dim.nsion-order routing. The em.eddings provide optim.l algorithm. for non-pipelined κ-ary Divide&Conquer com.utations in worm.ole m.shes. Our results generalize what has been known for the binary case and they achieve trivial lower bounds for κ = 3. For 4 ≤ κ ≤ 7, we give lower-bound m.tching solutions in 2-D m.shes with arbitrary routing. © 1999 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Directed Acyclic Subsequence Graph (DASG) is an autom.ton that accepts all subsequences of a given string T. DASG allows us to decide whether a string S is a subsequence of T in O(|S|) tim. where |S| is the length of S. We show that if we slightly m.dify the string T, it is possible to get the DASG for the m.dified string from.the original DASG. For this purpose we define these operations on DASG: adding a state on the left, deleting a state on left, adding a state on the right, deleting a state on the right, adding an inner state, deleting an inner state and replacing a transition label. For each of these operations we describe the m.dification of DASG and the proof of correctness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

There are two ways of using the nondeterm.nistic finite autom.ta (NFA). The first one is the transform.tion to the equivalent determ.nistic finite autom.ton and the second one is the sim.lation of the run of NFA. In this paper we discuss the second way. We present an overview of the sim.lation m.thods that have been found in the approxim.te string m.tching. As m.re com.uting centers collect files to use in data-m.ning or data-m.rts, m.naging long-term.storage space becom.s m.re im.ortant. We describe a new way to m.re accurately predict which files will be used in the future. This new m.thod is an order-of-m.gnitude m.re accurate than any current technique. Fifty to eighty percent of all user files can be com.ressed or m.ved to tertiary storage with little im.act on the user perceived perform.nce. Advances in aircraft carrier life cycle cost analysis for acquisition and ownership decision-m.king

作者： Chewning, Im.m.retto, SJ Irvin M. Chewning:is currently the Director of the Aircraft Carrier Cost Estimating and Industrial Analysis Group of the Naval Sea Systems Command. Over the past four years Mr. Chewning has guided the cost analysis effort for the new CVNX class aircraft carrier through a three-part analysis of alternatives and is currently steering it towards Milestone I in June of 2000. In 1999 the CVNX cost analysis team was presented the NAVSEA Association of Scientists and Engineers “outstanding team achievement” award for its work on the CVNX analysis of alternatives. Mr. Chewning's professional career includes over 16 years as an employee of Newport News Shipbuilding as a Pipe Fitter Piping Systems Designer Piping Systems Engineer and Cost Engineer. He has worked at the Naval Sea Systems Command since 1980 as a Senior Cost Analyst Branch Head and Deputy Division Director of the Cost Estimating and Analysis Division. He has preformed cost analysis work for virtually all USN combatant programs including submarines cruisers destroyers frigates and aircraft carriers. He also performed the cost analysis work for the OSD evaluation of the Israeli Naval Modernization Program in the 1980's. Mr. Chewning is also Chairman of the NATO Specialist Team on Ship Costing a subgroup of the NATO Naval Group Six on Ship Design. Under his leadership two Allied Naval Engineering Publications have been completed in the 1990's: ANEP-41 on Ship Costing and ANEP-49 on Ways to Reduce Costs of Ships. In 1999 the NATO Specialist Team on Ship Costing completed a paper titled “Manpower Reduction and the Use of Commercial Standards and Practices to Reduce Costs of Ships.” The result of this work will be incorporated in a future revision of the aforementioned ANEFs. Mr. Chewning is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Chewning has also completed courses at the University of Virginia and Christopher Newport University Mr. Chewning is a graduate of the Program Management College

The U.S. Navy recently conducted an analysis of alternatives (AOA) to set the stage for determ.ning the characteristics and acquisition strategy for its next generation aircraft carrier. The platform.design selected is expected to be in service throughout the 21st century. The param.ters under consideration for change in the new carrier design lie in the areas of propulsion and electric power generation, aviation, survivability, service life, and total ownership cost (TOC) reduction. The issue of affordability is param.unt This paper focuses on the need for the program.m.nagem.nt office and its supporting cost analysis staff to understand the life cycle cost (LCC) of the existing and proposed future aircraft carriers and to then translate these LCC's into m.aningful inform.tion for cost-conscious decision m.king. The challenge is to relate the LCC in term. the key decision-m.kers and the engineering team.can use to satisfy their respective roles. Thus, it is necessary to translate the results of the given ship design alternative LCC's into the paradigm. of the respective stakeholders: Fleet User (operators of aircraft carriers) Ship Designers (translators of the fleet operator requirem.nts) Program.Sponsors (providers of the funding resources) Program.m.nagem.nt Office, Ship builder and Supporting Industry (executors of the acquisition and construction of the ship) Navy and OSD decision-m.kers (overseers of program.execution) The paper describes the aircraft carrier LCC breakdown structure that has resulted, in part, from.a recent navy/shipbuilder integrated product team.effort to capture total ownership costs. The structure has been used in the AOA as a tool to identify cost drivers and to add the tim. elem.nt to the cast equation in order to perform.return on investm.nt and program.affordability analysis. He was the Design Manager for the Engineering and Design Phase ofthe Enhanced Maritime Prepositioning Fme Ship (MPF(E)). Cuwently Mt: M2.zumdar is Deputy Ship Design Manager in NAVSEA 030 for the LHD and LSD classes of ships. Mr. Mazumdar was awarded a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1981 and an MS in Computer Science fiom Virginia Tech in 1988. He also possesses an International ChiejEngineer License (Motot unlimited). Mr. Mancmdar has been an Associate Member of WAME since 1981. James C. Sandison:is a Senior Ship Design Manager (SDM) for surface ships in the Nawl Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA03D3C). He has a long tem practical background in design construction and testing of surface ships. Starting in NAVSEC as a diving and salvage systems engineer for the Bathyscaph TRIESTE he has been involved with most ofthe Nays Mine Warfare and Auxiliary ships from naval architect to the present Senior Ship Design Manager for the Strategic Sealift Program. Mr: Sandison entered the U.S. Navy in 1956 in the (diesel) Submarine Service. Afterward he “went to sea in sailing ships and completed an apprenticeship as a wooden shipbuildex. In 1971 he graduated from the University of Michigan with a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and was employed by NAVSEC. His latest additional duties have been as engineering coordinator on board the USS CONSTITUTION for her 200th anniversary sail. Mr. Sandison is a member of SNAME ASNE and the U.S. Naval Institute. Rick DuFlocq has over 24 years of combined project management mechanical system and general awangmmt design and design documentation experience the last 14 years urith Advance Marine Enterprises (AME). The paper will describe the stream.ined acquisition process involved in the procurem.nt, and conversion, of the first two of three Enhanced m.ritim. Prepositioning Force (m.F(E)) ships. This program.was one of the first program. undertaken within the Governm.nt's new policy of Acquisition Reform. which resulted in the developm.nt of "perform.nce based" requirem.nts for these ships. This program.is notable in that one prim. contractor is responsible for the accom.lishm.nt of all phases, and that the contractors participating were not shipyards as is usually the fashion for Governm.nt ship acquisition program.. Also of note, was that after the conversion contracts were awarded, responsibility for the conduct of detail design, conversion, and operation and m.intenance of the ship was transferred from.the NAVSEA Sealift Program.Office (Pm. 385) to the m.litary Sealift Com.and (m.C). The first part of the paper will describe the basic m.ssion of the m.F(E) ships, and a description of the origin of the program.requirem.nts. The second part of the paper will chronicle in detail the portions of the engineering design and specification developm.nt process, which will include descriptions of the unique digital data recording and tracking system. developed by the Governm.nt m.F(E) Design Support Team.to support the acquisition phases of the procurem.nt. The third and final part of the paper will elaborate on the conversion contract awards and the transition of the program.from.Pm. 385 to m.C.
