Experimental study on usage of (PET) waste plastic incorporating with (TIO2) titanium dioxide for the construction of plastic roads

Plastic waste, which is observed to be very harmful for the habitat, is found to be occur around 5% in municipal solid waste (mSW). Currently a critical problem is the discarding of plastic waste. These waste plastics are everlasting, which in turn contributes to the immense environment contamination and public health troubles. The several researches at different institutes advised that this waste plastic can be utilized for the purpose of construction of asphaltic pavements. The usage of this plastic waste for constructing pavements is depended on the economic, technical and ecological criteria. If this waste plastic be used properly for the manufacturing of roads, discarding and problems of contamination will be diminished to a great extent. The main aim of this study is to find out the maximum proportion of plastic waste which will be added in the constructional mix for getting the mandatory strength. The main focus of this study is to how the amount of waste plastic will be increased when a suitable amount of an admixture like tio2 will be blended to the normal plastic waste mix which will be utilized for the manufacturing of waste plastic pavements. Two kinds of plastic waste samples were casted, with Tio2 and without Tio2. Both kinds of samples were prepared according to marshall mix design prescribed by mORTH (IV revision) on both types of samples, tests like marshall stability test and indirect tensile strength test were done and then the results were compared. It was observed that the value for both the marshall stability and indirect tensile strength test shows a huge increase in their respective value of plastic samples blended with Tio2 when compared to the normal plastic waste samples at 17% of waste plastic, the marshall stability value observed to be the maximum and however for the indirect tensile strength at 17% of plastic waste blended with 17% Tio2 shows the highest values when compared to normal plastic waste samples. Wind loads, Seismic loads, Eccentric loads on columns, Water pressure, Slope movements, Impact loads from ships (Pier collision, berthing, etc.), Cable forces on transmission towers, River currents, and other factors may all produce lateral load. Along with axial load, lateral loads must be considered while designing a foundation system. Lateral group capacity is generally calculated by lowering soil subgrade modulus and will not consider the effects of spacing between piles, lateral movement of piles, and number of piles. To investigate the effect of these parameters, the study is conducted by carrying analysis with the help of Plaxis 3D on 3 × 3, 4 × 4, and 5 × 5 pile groups considering 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, and 6D spacing between piles and different deflection criteria of 6, 9, 12, 25, and 100 mm. The effect of these parameters on lateral group efficiency is also investigated. The study shows the lateral-load capacity of group piles increases as spacing between the piles and the number of piles in the group increase. As the spacing between the piles is increasing, lateral group efficiency is also increasing. As the number of piles increases in the group, lateral group efficiency decreases up to 4D spacing between piles after which it increases. As lateral displacement increases in a group, lateral group efficiency decreases. The results obtained from Plaxis 3D are compared with IS 2911, Reese and matlock, and Poulos, and variation in the result is observed. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Fire hazard is perceived to be one of the most destructive hazards faced by mankind in any urban environment as a primary or a secondary consequential event. In recent decades there has been substantial increase in adaptation of RC buildings for residential, commercial & office purposes. Therefore, the building fire appears as a more frequent hazard in comparison with other natural or man-made events. The occurrence of fire is unpredictable and high frequent event, that has potential to create a disaster (resulting in huge loss of property and life). Therefore, there is an imminent need for its consideration during analysis, design of new buildings and in assessment of structural integrity for existing buildings. This aids in providing a safe and functional fire-resistant building during its design life. The recent incidents that have occurred in Hyderabad city (Deccan mall & Swapnalok complex etc), Telangana state, India, in particular is an epitome of this disaster. However, the existing codes of practice for Indian code designed buildings (BIS) in particular do not address assessment of the building structural behaviour subjected to fire load. moreover, progressive collapse mechanism of any building can initiate due to loss of critical structural components due to any unforeseen event like explosion, accident, etc. Further, there are more likelihood of triggering of a fire hazard, eventually resulting in cascading failure of a structure. Hence, an attempt has been made to assess the structural integrity of structure during initiation of progressive collapse subjected to fire load. The hypothetical G+3(ground + three floors) reinforced concrete building designed as per IS456:2000, modelled and analysed using the structural finite element software (SAP2000). Reinforced structural elements undergo damage when they are subjected to external agencies such as earthquakes, exposure to fire and ageing due to environmental factors. When important reinforced concrete (RC) structures undergo damage that is within a repairable limit, repair or retrofit strategies are adopted to restore the strength, stiffness and stability of such damaged buildings. In this work, an RC column is considered having the dimensions 250 mm × 500 mm × 3200 mm. The RC column in this study is cast with concrete having a compressive strength of 18 N/mm2. The distress in this case is in the form of low compressive strength of concrete leading to low load-carrying capacity. Due to this reason, a strength modification of the concrete compressive strength in the RC column is required to enhance the load-carrying capacity. In this case, the RC column is retrofitted with the external application of reinforced concrete (RC) jacket around it. The RC jacket retrofitting method is applied when the increase in the load-carrying capacity to be enhanced is more than 25%. The reinforced concrete jacketing which is to be provided around the distressed RC column is designed by Indian codal provisions (IS 15988: 2013) and ACI codal provisions (ACI 318: 2008) separately. The design parameters provided and obtained using these codes are compared. From this study, the optimum thickness of the RC jacket applied is also evaluated. The Indian codal provision takes into account an upper bound while considering the factor of safety for design and leading to the overestimation of design parameters and quantities. The effectiveness of design with respect to the strength can be achieved by considering the optimum requirement of the quantities as per ACI codal provisions such that the cost of the overall retrofit can be minimized. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

There exist various techniques for retrofitting of reinforced concrete structural elements that have undergone damage. The use of FRP wrapping is one of the retrofitting techniques to enhance the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns (up to 20% increase). In this work, enhancement of axial load-carrying capacity of distressed RC columns adopting CFRP and GFRP was carried out. An RC column having a cross-sectional dimension of 400 mm × 600 mm and a height of 4 m is considered for this study. The RC column considered for the study was initially designed using concrete having a compressive strength of 30 N/mm2. Eventually, due to erroneous mixing and placing of concrete in the site, it resulted in the concrete in the column to have developed a lower compressive strength of 25 N/mm2. This distressed RC column eventually tends to have a lower load-carrying capacity due to a reduction in the compressive strength of concrete. This RC column is retrofitted using fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites by wrapping the column to restore its original load-carrying capacity through the confinement provided by the FRP wrapping. The FRP composites considered in this study are carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) fabrics wrapped around the distressed RC column with the application of epoxy. The design and estimation of quantity of the retrofit using CFRP and GFRP are adopted based on ACI codal provisions (ACI 440.2R-08). It was learnt by carrying out the design of the retrofit for the distressed RC column, the number of CFRP and GFRP layers obtained for wrapping are five numbers and ten numbers, respectively. From this study, it is learnt that CFRP is better when compared to GFRP in terms of enhancement in strength and load-carrying capacity of the distressed RC column with a lesser number of layers of wrap. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Aluminium alloy has major application in both areas such as automotive and aircraft industries. Aluminium alloys have gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of lightweight structure requiring high strength-to-weight ratio. In this research investigation, FSP was used for fabricating the Al7075 alloys reinforced by Al2O3 + eggshell reinforcement particles. The tool rotation speed (TS: 920, 1585 and 2250), tool tilt angle (TA: 1°, 2° and 3°) and volume percentage reinforcement (RF: 2%, 4%, and 6%) are used as dominating parameters. The effects of these parameters on the mechanical properties of the Al composites are studies in details. Using response surface methodology to developed mathematical models to be significant in all three response parameters and to determine the significance of factors and their interaction for maximizing the mechanical properties. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Fuel utilization and emission estimation are essential for assessing the consequence of materials and strict emission control measures due to the startling rate of weather changes. The world's socioeconomic issues are significantly impacted by the growing worldwide average temperature and its effects on climate change. The melting of the polar ice caps, that is a direct result of this rise, leads to a number of other problems, such as the polar animal’s death, coastal flooding, and exposure to bacteria and earliest microorganisms that are frozen in the snow and could cause many more global pandemics and invisible illnesses. In this paper, Enhanced Prediction of Fuel Consumption and Carbon Emissions in Light-Duty Vehicles using Dynamic Graph Convolutional Recurrent Imputation Network (EP-FCCE-DGCRIN) are proposed.. The effectiveness of the EP-FCCE-DGCRIN technique is compared to other existing methods. This research offers evidence-based suggestions to lessen the environmental effects of vehicles for both manufacturers and consumers depending upon the outcomes of the Descriptive Statistics analysis.

Use of internet for collecting the data is becoming increasingly popular amongst researchers due to its higher speed of data collection and lesser cost since it requires very less workforce. In this study, a webpage based revealed preference (RP) and stated preference (SP) survey is conducted, where the data collected from the revealed preference questionnaire is used in real-time to generate the options for stated preference experiment. For obtaining, the accurate coordinates of the origin-destination of a trip and the travel time by all available modes Google maps API are used. A mode choice model using RP and SP data individually and a joint RP+SP model using traditional approach is developed and a comparison of the obtained results is made. The developed models suggest that this methodology can be used for collecting the RP data. However, the methodology can be improved for SP experiment and can be helpful in collecting the good quality SP data. Use of Google maps API provides more accurate travel time and travel distance skims compared to zonal level skims obtained from travel demand model.

Reduced Order model Based Flight Control System for a Flexible Aircraft

The interaction between the flight control system and its structural modes becomes stronger if the frequency separation between rigid body mode and flexible modes of flexible aircraft are closer, and it introduces higher flexibility effects on aircraft dynamics. In such a case, the design of a flight control law is not valid based on the assumption that aircraft dynamics are rigid body models. moreover, an integrated aircraft model having a rigid body and elastic body modes contain a large number of states. Therefore, we have designed an optimal flight control law from a reduced-order model and realized with a flexible aircraft represented by a full order model. For this, the simplified model of the flexible aircraft is derived using the Chidambara technique, and Luenberger observer is applied to estimating the elastic states of a simplified model from the aircraft measurements.

The estimation of accurate values of aircraft flow angles namely angle of attack (AOA) and angle of sideslip (AOSS) is a crucial step in the safe flight operation and aircraft modeling. The airdata measurement is solely dependent on the data from sensors installed on aircraft, and such sensor data is prone to errors due to flow distortion at aircraft body and sensor misalignment. Further, the online estimation of airdata measurement is more cost-effective and is of more relevance in autonomous flight applications. This work focuses on the online estimate of aircraft flow angles in the presence of atmospheric turbulence using an adaptive sequential estimation algorithm. The proposed estimator has the potential to accurately estimate the AOA and AOSS even in the adverse effect of external disturbance like atmospheric turbulence.
