Social network websites are mainly constructed around the notion of user identities, as set up on the bases of their profiles, and online generated contents such as texts, videos, photos. Still, while some profiles gain an important position in the network, others do not. Similarly, some online generated contents appear to gain a great deal of attention from the part of users, whereas others are completely ignored. In this context, the notion of profile and online content related popularity has come to the forefront. Additionally, several studies turn out to be focused on the area of popularity associated analysis and prediction. Noteworthy, however, is that the popularity evaluative metrics prove to vary from a social network to another. In this respect, the present work is conceived to deal with such challenges through an advanced proposal whereby a unified presentation of popularity metrics related to each social entity, across several social networks, is put forward. Accordingly, a hierarchical structure of popularity metrics, as enhanced with a particular RDF presentation, is suggested, along with a brief summary of wide range of methods used to analyze such entities related popularities. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hand pose estimation system based on combined features for mobile devices

Today's mobile devices or smartphones have a revolutionary impact on how we communicate, especially after the advent of devices like smart watches and Google glasses that require new ways to interact with them. To optimise the use of mobile devices, special input and output peripherals have been designed over the years to facilitate communication with them. The well known peripherals are the multi-touch screens. Smartphones are too small to work freely using their input screens. To solve this problem, recent research has focused on contactless and natural gestural interfaces. In this context, we propose a hand gesture recognition system for mobile devices as a simple way of communication with smartphones. In this work, we describe a hand gesture recognition system for Android devices based on a combination of HOG and LBP features and the SVM classifier. An accuracy rate of about 95% is obtained on the improved 'NUS database I'. In addition, we conduct experiments on different Android devices to know the impact of using such a recognition task on embedded systems like smartphones. © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The objective of this study was to assess the viability of establishing an interactive Virtual National Library of Medicine (VNL-M). This research proposes a solution that leverages machine learning algorithms and cloud computing technologies, including advanced techniques such as Hadoop, MapReduce, and Cascading, to virtualize a significant number of medical manuscripts from the National Library of Tunisia. The proposed solution has two phases: •The first presents a hybrid (KNN/SVM) approach for an optical character recognition (OCR) system. Because this technology necessitates high bandwidth and computational capacity, spreading it via distributed architecture or platforms may be a viable alternative for improving performance. •The second entails considering cloud computing as an infrastructure (IaaS) to deploy virtualization techniques for the National Library of Tunisia's “medicine and health” subject area, which belongs to the “natural sciences and mathematics” class in the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. Furthermore, Cloud storing as a Service (SaaS) is employed for the storing and retrieval of enormous amounts of medical manuscript information. The proposed solution was evaluated by conducting experiments using S3 and Amazon EC2 Elstic Map Reduce with an interesting-scale dataset from a database of manuscript heritage. Lastly, the VNL-M is published as a Web service (VNL-Mweb Service).

High frequency oscillations (HFO) from, MEG (magnetoencephalography) and intracerebral EEG are considered as effective tools to identify cognitive status and several cortical disorders especially in epilepsy diagnosis. The aim of our study is to evaluate stationary wavelet transform (SWT) technique performance in efficient reconstruction of pure epileptic high frequency oscillations, reputed as biomarkers of epileptogenic zones: generators of inter ictal epileptic discharges, and offhand seizures. We applied SWT on simulated and real database to detect non-contaminated HFO by spiky element. For simulated data, we computed the GOF of reconstruction that reaches for all studied constraint (relative amplitude, frequency, SNR and overlap) a promising results. For real data we used time frequency domain to evaluate SWT robustness of HFO reconstruction. We proved that SWT is an efficient filtering technique for separation HFO from spiky events. Our results would have an important impact on the definition of epileptogenic zones. © 2020, The Author(s).

Nowadays, human recognition with biometric characteristic have been investigated in many researchers. However, traditional biometric methods are not always robust against counterfeit and spoof attacks. The challenge of this work is to develop a bimodal biometric system, based on more reliable and robust characteristics against counterfeiting. Indeed, biometric system based on the venous network of the hand gives higher recognition rate compared to other systems. Furthermore, the fusion of two prints minimums the error rate and counterfeits. In our biometric system, the most challenging phase is the feature extraction step. For this, we propose a new feature extraction approach based on the concatenation of the pyramid of Difference of Gaussian (DoG) and Local Line Binary Patterns (LLBP) histograms (H-DoG_LLBP). To evaluate the proposed system, we opted for Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifiers. The experimental study is based on the dorsal hand vein BOSPHORUS database and finger vein MMCBNU_6000 database. Our system presents an area under curve (AUC) equal to 0.99, and 0.001 mean square error (MSE) with ANN, and 0.0042 equal error rate (EER) with SVM.

A New Method for Sentiment Analysis Using Contextual Auto-Encoders

Sentiment analysis, a hot research topic, presents new challenges for understanding users＇ opinions and judg-ments expressed online. They aim to classify the subjective texts by assigning them a polarity label. In this paper, weintroduce a novel machine learning framework using auto-encoders network to predict the sentiment polarity label at theword level and the sentence level. Inspired by the dimensionality reduction and the feature extraction capabilities of theauto-encoders, we propose a new model for distributed word vector representation ＂PMI-SA＂ using as input pointwise-mutual-information ＂PMI＂ word vectors. The resulted continuous word vectors are combined to represent a sentence. Anunsupervised sentence embedding method, called Contextual Recursive Auto-Encoders ＂CoRAE＂, is also developed forlearning sentence representation. Indeed, CoRAE follows the basic idea of the recursive auto-encoders to deeply composethe vectors of words constituting the sentence, but without relying on any syntactic parse tree. The CoRAE model consistsin combining recursively each word with its context words （neighbors＇ words： previous and next） by considering the wordorder. A support vector machine classifier with fine-tuning technique is also used to show that our deep compositionalrepresentation model CoRAE improves significantly the accuracy of sentiment analysis task. Experimental results demon-strate that CoRAE remarkably outperforms several competitive baseline methods on two databases, namely, Sanders twittercorpus and Facebook comments corpus. The CoRAE model achieves an efficiency of 83.28% with the Facebook dataset and97.57% with the Sanders dataset.

Handwritten document images can be highly affected by degradation for different reasons: Paper ageing, daily-life scenarios (wrinkles, dust, etc.), bad scanning process and so on. These artifacts raise many readability issues for current Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) algorithms and severely devalue their efficiency. In this paper, we propose an end to end architecture based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to recover the degraded documents into a clean and readable form. Unlike the most well-known document binarization methods, which try to improve the visual quality of the degraded document, the proposed architecture integrates a handwritten text recognizer that promotes the generated document image to be more readable. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to use the text information while binarizing handwritten documents. Extensive experiments conducted on degraded Arabic and Latin handwritten documents demonstrate the usefulness of integrating the recognizer within the GAN architecture, which improves both the visual quality and the readability of the degraded document images. Moreover, we outperform the state of the art in H-DIBCO challenges, after fine tuning our pre-trained model with synthetically degraded Latin handwritten images, on this task. © 2021, CC BY.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a process responsible for altering emotions' reactions and expressions as well as situations that simulate such feelings to better respond to environmental ***, ER is actually a mere mental and behavioral process that many of us already perform consciously and unconsciously. In this issue, with the imperious role of emotions in learning process which they crucially influence student's cognitive performances and academic outcomes, several researchers proposed different methods and tools for regulating learners' negative emotions while learning in online environment. In the present paper, we discuss the current and original research works that apply different strategies and methods for emotion regulation in different smart environments (i.e., Intelligent Tutoring systems) by adopting a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach.

People re-identification has been a very active research topic recently in computer vision. It is an important application in surveillance system with disjoint cameras. This paper is focused on the implementation of a human re-identification system. First the face of detected people is divided into three parts and some soft-biometric traits are extracted from each part. In second step, we can recognize people even if their faces are hidden or they are with back appearance. The features extraction will be carried out according to the overall characteristics of the complete images of different persons. An algorithm that identifies people from their body shape will be developed. A powerful representation of the person based on the characteristics of color, texture and shape as well as different soft-biometric features is suggested. The experiments are carried out on SAIVT-SoftBio database which consists of videos from disjoint surveillance cameras as well as some static image based datasets (MUCT, VIPeR, CVSRP). © 2017.
