The Environment-Vulnerability-Decision-Technology (EVDT) Framework is a process for developing multi-disciplinary, interactive decision support systems (DSS) for a variety of sustainable development applications. This framework seeks to support the use of Earth Observation and socioeconomic data in a format usable by non-experts, while harnessing cloud computing, machine learning, economic analysis, complex systems modeling, and systems engineering. It is characterized by five basic elements: (1) the use of systems architecture & stakeholder analysis to identify needs and understand the context;(2) collaborative development of the DSS that continues stakeholder engagement past the initial systems architecting;(3) a concept of the sustainable development application as a complex socio-enviro-technical system, typically involving the Environment, Human Vulnerability and Societal Impact, Human Behavior and Decision-Making, and Technology Design;(4) an interactive decision-support system;and (5) A consideration towards modularity and re-use of DSS components in future applications. In particular, the EVDT Framework draws from the fields of systems architecture (and other systems engineering techniques), GIS, collaborative planning, and remote observation, each of which have complementary aspects that can be brought to bear on development challenges, particularly those of relatively small spatial scales (municipalities to metropolitan regions) that tend to be underserved by major international development programs. Over the past few years, the EVDT Framework has been used to develop DSSs for mangrove conservation in Brazil, flood resilience in Indonesia, invasive plant species management in Benin, cranberry bog renovation and wetland restoration in Massachusetts, and COVID-19 response in six major metropolitan areas around the world. The Vida Decision Support System (Vida) is an application of the Environment-Vulnerability-Decision-Technology (EVDT) integrated modeling framework specifically aimed at COVID-19 impact and response analysis. The development of Vida has been an international collaboration involving multidisciplinary teams of academics, government officials (including public health, economics, environmental, and demographic data collection officials), and others from six states: Angola, Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States. These collaborators have been involved with the identification of decision support needs, the surfacing and creation of relevant data products, and the evaluation of prototypes, with the vision of creating an openly available online platform that integrates earth observation instruments (Landsat, VIIRs, Planet Lab's PlanetScope, NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center, etc.) with in-situ data sources (COVID-19 case data, local demographic data, policy histories, mobile device-based mobility indices, etc.). Vida both visualizes historical data of relevance to decision-makers and simulates possible future scenarios. The modeling techniques used include system dynamics for public health, EO-based change detection and machine learning for environmental analysis, and discrete-event simulation of policy changes and impacts. In addition to the direct object of this collaboration (the development of Vida), collaborators have also benefited from sharing individual COVID-19-related insights with the network and from considering COVID-19 response in a more integrated fashion. This work outlines the Vida Decision Support System concept and the EVDT framework on which it is based. The international team is using Vida to evaluate the outcomes in several large cities regarding COVID cases, environmental changes, economic changes and policy decisions. He is an assistant professor of Science & Technology Studies and the associate director of the Games & Simulation Arts & Sciences Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY. His work examines game engines and design through a feminist technoscience studies lens. is a co-guest editor for this special issue Critical Game Design and an associate professor in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. His research examines the creative collaborative work of (video)game design and development. This research examines the cultural and collaborative dynamics that occur in both professional “AAA” organizations and formal and informal “independent” game development communities. His book Developer's Dilemma was published by MIT Press (2014).

This special issue addresses the epistemological, institutional, and political challenges of integrating critical games scholarship with game development practices and pedagogy. The featured essays help form a foundation for Critical Game Design and draw from intellectual traditions and debates not only from both game studies and game design, but from the classical design disciplines as well. We aim to build more connective tissue and collaboration between game design and the broader design disciplines, allowing space for research, scholarship, and creative work that drives the underlying epistemological core of the many spaces in which all designers find themselves educated and employed.

Acquisition of surface electromyography (sEMG) from a person with an amputated lower extremity (LE) during prosthesis-assisted walking remains a significant challenge due to the dynamic nature of the gait cycle. Current solutions to sEMG-based neural control of active LE prostheses involve a combination of customized electrodes, prosthetic sockets, and liners. These technologies are generally: (i) incompatible with a subject's existing prosthetic socket and liners; (ii) uncomfortable to use; and (iii) expensive. This paper presents a flexible dry electrode design for sEMG acquisition within LE prosthetic sockets which seeks to address these issues. Design criteria and corresponding design decisions are explained and a proposed flexible electrode prototype is presented. Performances of the proposed electrode and commercial Ag/AgCl electrodes are compared in seated subjects without amputations. Quantitative analyses suggest comparable signal qualities for the proposed novel electrode and commercial electrodes. The proposed electrode is demonstrated in a subject with a unilateral transtibial amputation wearing her own liner, socket, and the portable sEMG processing platform in a preliminary standing and level ground walking study. Qualitative analyses suggest the feasibility of real-time sEMG data collection from load-bearing, ambulatory subjects.

High accuracy tumor diagnoses and benchmarking of hematoxylin and eosin stained prostate core biopsy images generated by explainable deep neural networks

Histopathological diagnoses of tumors in tissue biopsy after Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining is the gold standard for oncology care. H&E staining is slow and uses dyes, reagents and precious tissue samples that cannot be reused. Thousands of native nonstained RGB Whole Slide Image (RWSI) patches of prostate core tissue biopsies were registered with their H&E stained versions. Conditional Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (cGANs) that automate conversion of native nonstained RWSI to computational H&E stained images were then trained. High similarities between computational and H&E dye stained images with Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) 0.902, Pearsons Correlation Coefficient (CC) 0.962 and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) 22.821 dB were calculated. A second cGAN performed accurate computational destaining of H&E dye stained images back to their native nonstained form with SSIM 0.9, CC 0.963 and PSNR 25.646 dB. A single-blind study computed more than 95% pixel-by-pixel overlap between prostate tumor annotations on computationally stained images, provided by five-board certified MD pathologists, with those on H&E dye stained counterparts. We report the first visualization and explanation of neural network kernel activation maps during H&E staining and destaining of RGB images by cGANs. Current methods of prosthetic socket fabrication remain subjective and ineffective at creating an interface to the human body that is both comfortable and functional. Though there has been recent success using methods like magnetic resonance imaging and biomechanical modeling, a low-cost, streamlined, and repeatable process has not been fully demonstrated. Medical ultrasonography, which has significant potential to expand its clinical applications, is being pursued to acquire data that may quantify and improve the design process and fabrication of prosthetic sockets. This paper presents a new multi-modal imaging approach for acquiring volumetric images of a human limb, specifically focusing on how motion of the limb is compensated for using optical imagery.

Lorraine Justice PhD is currently a professor and the former dean of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The college houses six schools: Design American School for Crafts Art Film and Animation Photography and Print Media. Prior to joining RIT Justice was the dean of the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). During her tenure PolyU came to be regarded as one of the top 30 design schools in the world and one of the top 10 in Asia. Justice is the author of China's Design Revolution (MIT Press 2012). She consults for some of the top firms in the world is a TED presenter a board member for several international design journals and a Fellow of the Industrial Design Society of America. Meshella Eddye Woods holds a BA in human environment and design and has 39 years of interior architectural design and facility management experience. Her career has included performance and supervision as well as training evaluation and management of work involved in the planning design and construction of interior environments in private industry and the federal government. She offers additional expertise in computer technology as it relates to project planning and documentation program management and administration video and digital media and website design. Kwame Nyanning is vice president of experience design at McKinsey & Co. with more than 15 years' experience in product service and customer experience design in such organizations as Studio Archetype Sapient frog design Adaptive Path Infosys Technology and Native Design. He has worked with clients and organizations from Ford Motor Co. to Pernod

Noel Mayo was the first African‐American—not to mention the first African‐American industrial designer—to graduate from Philadelphia's University of the arts. And even after that, he says, “I learned the hard way that I had to exceed all expectations.” From Pittsburgh to Columbus, Ohio, to Hong Kong to Atlanta and Rochester, New York, Dr. Lorraine Justice's career has gone from one pioneering role to the next. Looking back on a life spent creating opportunities and paving the way for those to come—in the federal government and elsewhere. “It takes a special kind of designer to be successful at a place like the Firm,” says McKinsey's vice president of experience design. During his career, Harrison executed more than 700 designs, a significant number of which were successful in the marketplace, and received the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008. He was also Sears Roebuck's first African‐American executive. It was not easy getting there.
