A hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) combined with an improved Nelder-Mead algorithm (NMA) is proposed and introduced into the field of structural damage detection (SDD). The improved NMA chooses parts of subplanes of the n-simplex for optimization, a two-step method uses modal strain energy based index (MSEBI) to locate damage firstly, and both of them can reduce the computational cost of the basic PSO-Nelder-Mead (PSO-NM). An index of solution assurance criteria (SAC) is defined to describe the correlation between the identified and actual damage of structures. Numerical simulations on a 2-storey frame model is adopted to assess the performance of the proposed hybrid method. The illustrated results show that the improved PSONM can provide a reliable tool for accurate SDD in both single and multiple damage cases. Meanwhile, the improved PSO-NM algorithm has a good robustness to noises contaminated in mode shapes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Based on firefly algorithm (FA), a structural damage detection (SDD) and moving force identification (MFI) method is proposed in this paper. The basic principle of FA is introduced, some key parameters, such as light intensity, attractiveness, and rules of attraction are defined. The moving forcesinduced responses of damage structures are defined as a function of both damage factors and moving forces. By minimizing the difference between the real and calculated responses with given damage factors and moving forces, the identified problem is transformed into a constrained optimization problem and then it can be hopefully solved by the FA. In order to assess the accuracy and the feasibility of the proposed method, a three-span continuous beam subjected to moving forces is taken as an example for numerical simulations. The illustrated results show that the method can simultaneously identify the structural damages and moving forces with a good accuracy and better robustness to noise. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

A novel two-step intelligent algorithm is proposed for structural damage detection (SDD) by combining particle swarm optimization and Nelder-Mead (PSO-NM) algorithm, in which two steps are deployed for exploring a better balance between computational efficiency and accuracy. In the first step, a modal strain energy based index (MSEBI) is defined and used to precisely locate damages of structures. In the second step, structural damage extent is determined by PSO-NM algorithm. Some beam-like structures are adopted to assess its applicability. A parametric study and the effect of measurement noise on the method are also considered. The illustrated numerical simulation results show that the novel method can not only locate structural damage but also identify damage extent of beam-like structures with a good robustness to noises.

An integrated method is proposed for structural nonlinear damage detection based on time series analysis and the higher statistical moments of structural responses in this study. It combines the time series analysis, the higher statistical moments of AR model residual errors and the fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering techniques. A few comprehensive damage indexes are developed in the arithmetic and geometric mean of the higher statistical moments, and are classified by using the FCM clustering method to achieve nonlinear damage detection. A series of the measured response data, downloaded from the web site of the Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL) USA, from a three-storey building structure considering the environmental variety as well as different nonlinear damage cases, are analyzed and used to assess the performance of the new nonlinear damage detection method. The effectiveness and robustness of the new proposed method are finally analyzed and concluded.

The longitudinal ultrasonic guided waves in oblique defects pipes were investigated experimentally and numerically in the paper. A novel method of the defect detection for pipes is proposed based on the Duffing -Holmes chaotic oscillator. Five kinds of defects with inclined angle of 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees were discussed arid analyzed, respectively. Based on the experiment, the corresponding simulations were conducted by using finite element software [S-DYNA. Both experimental arid numerical results show that this proposed method could be used to inspect the weaker guided waves;and the reflection coefficient of echo increases with the decrease of the inclined angle. One of the main objectives of this study was to activate the pozzolanic activity of sludge, produced by municipal sewage treatment plants (MSTP), which makes it become an admixture to replace a part of cement in cement-based materials. Nowadays, a significant quantity of MSTP sludge is obtained in China, and the disposal of sludge presents a rising challenge for the environment, which is the reason why this paper examines the possibility of adding this waste product to cement-based materials. MSTP sludge was activated by thermal (Incineration) and mechanical (Grinding) treatment. Meanwhile, the changes in the crystalline structure of MSTP sludge incineration ash (MSA) were evaluated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and mortar strength tests were carried out on the mortars containing MSA to investigate the reactivity of the produced materials. The obtained results revealed that the optimal activation conditions of MSA were as follows: incinerated at 800 C for 2.5 hours followed by fast cooling in air and then ground until 60 minutes. Moreover, we have observed that MSA has an appreciable effect on the increase in compressive strength of the mortars and using of 20% MSA as a replacement of part of cement could be considered the optimum content. More importantly, the tests showed that extract toxicity of heavy metals in MSA were much lower than the national standard though some heavy metals existed in MSA. These results demonstrate the feasibility of recycling MSTP sludge has become an admixture in cement-based materials for construction engineering.

In this study, method of monetary dimension considering the energy consumption difference and without considering the energy consumption difference are used to calculate the payback period of PV curtain wall;Besides the emergy dimension method is also introduced to calculate the payback period. An example is studied by the above methods. Comparative analysis shows that the payback period of PV curtain wall calculated by the monetary dimension method considering the energy consumption difference is shorter than that does not consider the energy consumption difference. Among them the payback period of PV curtain wall calculated by the method of emergy dimension is the shortest. The main reason for this is that the emergy dimension method analyzes an ideal condition which doesn’t include human factors while those factors exist in monetary dimension method. Taking the energy consumption difference into consideration in the calculation of the payback period of PV curtain wall makes the calculation more scientific, and the emergy dimension analysis illustrates the broad prospects for the development of PV curtain wall. © Sila Science. Molecular dynamic simulation of the mechanical properties of PI/SIO2 nanocomposite based on materials studio

The initial unit cell models of PI/SiO2Nanocomposite and pure polyimide were built by Materials Studio, the stiffness matrix and mechanical parameters such as Young modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus and Poisson ratio of the unit cells were achieved after molecular dynamic (MD) optimizations and calculations. Finally, the mechanical properties of pure polyimide and the PI/SiO2 nanocomposite with 5vol.% and 10vol.% nanosilica were compared. The result shows that the mechanical properties of polyimide can be remarkably reinforced by being filled with a low volume faction of silica-nanoparticle. © 2014, Journal of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research. Adhesively bonded pipe are extensively used in pipe system and pipeline failure under torsional loading is one of the most common failure modes. Owing to the complication of theoretical analysis, development of numerical method for optimized design and stress analysis of a strong joint remains a pressing issue. In this paper, a realistic bilinear local bond-slip law is employed for analyzing the behavior of adhesively bonded pipe joints under torsion, based on a parameters study by ANSYS finite element software. Several parameters (i.e. the shear modulus of pipe coupler) are considered for assessing shear stress distribution in the adhesive and load-displacement relationship of the interface. Finally, the factors influencing the interfacial behavior is analyzed. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
