The electro-mechanics of piezoelectric coating structure under frictional contacts

In papers of the piezoelectric coating/substrate system under smooth spherical contact (DOI: 10.1177/1081 286519 865773), conical contact (DOI: 10.1016/***.2019.08.031), and cylinder flat head contact (DOI: 10.1007/s11012-019-010851), Green's function method has been applied to solve the problem of piezoelectric friction contact. We deduced the analytical expression of piezoelectric coating structure, which is expressed by elementary functions. The numerical results highlight the best thickness to maintain a higher potential difference and a critical potential difference. This study has guiding significance for the future research and analysis of friction signals in intelligent manufacturing, such as piezoelectric tactile sensors.

Flexural waves usually propagate in one-and two-dimensional *** further our understanding on their transmission properties from the viewpoint of discrete lattice dynamics,we systematically established analytical atom chain models with mass defects and side *** mechanisms of the Bragg scattering and the local resonance corresponding to mass defects and side branches,respectively,are elucidated by means of the present *** results from the models show that increasing the number of mass defects or side branches decreases the transmission magnitude gradually,and the finite-width phononic bandgap may form due to the periodical arrangement of *** interplay between the local resonance and the Bragg scattering gives rise to the narrow phononic bandgap for lattice chains only with periodical side *** width of the bandgap strongly depends on the stiffness of side *** transmission is insensitive to the tensile strain considered for both kinds of defects,but significantly decreases with an increase in damping or wave *** present work helps further our understanding on the dynamics of flexural waves.

Identification of Moving Vehicle Loads Using Instantaneous Vision-Based Vehicle Spatiotemporal Information and Improved Time Domain Method

Accurate identification of moving vehicle loads on bridges is one of the challenging tasks in bridge structural health monitoring, but lacks of intensive investigations to merge the heterogeneous data of vision-based vehicle spatiotemporal information (VVSI) and vehicle-induced bridge responses for moving force identification (MFI) in the existing time domain methods (TDM). In this study, a novel MFI method is proposed by integrating instantaneous VVSI and an improved TDM (iTDM). At first, a novel VVSI method combining background subtraction with template matching is presented to accurately track moving vehicles on bridges. With the calibration technique and camera perspective transformation model, the distribution of vehicles (DOV) on bridges is obtained and used as a priori information in the subsequent MFI. Then, the iTDM is developed based on the MFI equation re-formed in the form of instantaneous VVSI instead of the constant speed vehicle crossing bridges assumed in the traditional TDM. Finally, based on the redundant dictionary matrix composed of Haar functions for a moving load, the MFI problem is converted to explore a solution to the atom vectors and then solved by the Tikhonov regularization method. Experimental verifications in laboratory and a comparative study with the existing three methods are conducted to assess the feasibility of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed MFI method outperforms the existing methods and can effectively identify the moving vehicle loads with a higher and acceptable accuracy. It is successful for the proposed method to replace the assumption of constant speed vehicle crossing bridge in the traditional TDM with the instantaneous VVSI in the MFI problem.

A peridynamic model for oxidation of T91 steel in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic

In this paper, we present a reaction-diffusion peridynamic model for the oxidation of T91 steel in liquid leadbismuth eutectic (LBE). By integrating oxidation kinetics with diffusion dynamics, our model is applicable to a broad range of high-temperature oxidation processes. Validation against experimental data of oxide scale growth for T91 steel in oxygen-saturated LBE at 400-550 degrees C and up to 13,000 h confirms its accuracy. Furthermore, we demonstrate the model's enhanced accuracy relative to traditional formula-based kinetic models. The new framework is utilized to investigate the influence of temperature and oxygen concentration on oxide scale evolution, indicating that elevated oxygen concentrations and temperatures significantly accelerate oxidation. Additionally, we explore the oxidation behavior of T91 steel with a non-uniform surface and oxide scale cracks, revealing that the outer magnetite oxide scale grows more rapidly than the inner Fe-Cr spinel scale in concave regions. Our model captures the transition of the oxide scale from an irregular to a flat, uniform morphology, aligning with experimental observations. This model demonstrates considerable potential for simulating high-temperature oxidation in complex geometries, including irregular surfaces and cracks, across various environmental conditions.

Dynamic stability analysis of laminated cylindrical shells considering fluid-structure interaction

This paper investigates the dynamic stability of laminated cylindrical shell submerged in a fluid. Assuming that the fluid is incompressible satisfying the Laplace equation, the coupling relationship between the external pressure from fluid acting on the cylindrical shell and the velocity potential function of the fluid is deduced by using Bernoulli law. Based on Karman-Donnell's thin shell theory, the governing equations for dynamic buckling of the composite laminated cylinder are established by introducing the constitutive relationship for laminated composite structures. Likely functions of the displacement and the stress function for cylindrical shell are proposed to construct Mathieu-Hill equation for dynamic stability of laminated cylindrical shell with fluid-structure interaction and the first three order dynamic instability regions are derived. A good agreement between the solutions from the proposed analysis and from the available literatures justified the accuracy and validity of the proposed analysis. With the established analysis, the influence of various parameters on the dynamic stability of cylinders are analyzed, from which a dynamic stability enhancement scheme suitable for composite laminated cylinders is summarized. It is found that the fluid-structure interaction will greatly reduce the excitation frequency of laminated cylindrical shells but has no effect on their vibration modes.

2D Green's function of orthotropic two-coating-substrate under a normal line force

The study of multi-layer coating structure is an important problem in the fields of machinery and materials. In this paper, a two-dimensional theoretical solution of the orthotropic double-coated substrate structure under the normal line force of the free surface is derived. The method in this paper is mainly aimed at orthotropic materials and falls within the scope of linear elasticity. Based on the general solution of two-dimensional orthotropic materials, the harmonic functions with undetermined constants corresponding to each region are constructed. With the equilibrium conditions, surface boundary conditions and interface continuity conditions, the full-field analytical solution (Green's function) expressed in elementary functions is determined with the method of mirror images, which is valuable to solve the full field analytical expression of layered structures for the linear elasticity problem. Compared with the existing theories, the effectiveness and accuracy of the method are verified. In the future, Green's function of the paper is the basis for the numerical integration of distributed loads, which can be used as the code basis for the development of special software to study ultra-precision coatings.& COPY;2023 Elsevier Inc. Integrating L1 and weighted L2 regularization for moving force identification from combined response measurements

Existing regularization methods have been proven effective in the ill-posed problem of moving force identification (MFI). However, both the constant and time-varying components of moving forces cannot be accurately identified at the same time, especially under higher measurement noises. To address this issue, a new MFI method is proposed by integrating the L1 and weighted L2 regularization methods in this study, where the presented weighted L2 regularization strategy achieves a more nuanced balance of moving force components through the incorporation of weight coefficients. Furthermore, the inherent solving characteristics of L1 and weighted L2 regularization methods are fully utilized to solve different components in moving forces separately. Numerical simulations and experimental verifications are carried out to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method can accurately identify moving forces even under 25% higher noise levels and it can effectively evaluate the axle loads and gross vehicle weight of the experimental vehicle. Besides, comparative studies further show that the proposed method outperforms the existing L1 and L2 regularization methods in the identification of both constant and time-varying forces, which provides a potential MFI tool for a higher accuracy and noise robustness to fix the MFI problem in practice.

Unified simulation of hardening and softening effects for metals up to failure

Toward accurately simulating both hardening and softening effects for metals up to failure,a new finite strain elastoplastic J2-flow model is proposed with the yield strength therein as a function of the plastic work in the explicit *** no need to identify any adjustable parameters,the uniaxial stress-strain response predicted from this new model is shown to automatically and accurately match any given data from monotonic uniaxial extension tests of *** such,the objectives in three respects are achieved for the first time,i.e.,(i)both the hardening and softening effects up to failure can be simulated in the sense of matching test data with no errors,(ii)the usual tedious implicit procedures toward identifying numerous unknown parameters need not be involved and can be totally bypassed,and(iii)the model applicability can be ensured in a broad sense for various metallic materials with markedly different transition effects from hardening to *** the new model,the complete response features of stretched bars and twisted tubes up to failure are studied,including the failure effects of bars under monotonic extension and tubes under monotonic torsion and,furthermore,the fatigue failure effects of bars under cyclic *** results show accurate agreement with the uniaxial data,and the results for both the shear stress and the normal stress at the finite torsion display realistic hardening-to-softening transition effects for the first time.

A parametric analysis of the "digitally-derived geometric design" of the facade of the Macau Holy house of Mercy

The Macau Holy House of Mercy was built in 1569 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Located in the historic center of Macao, the Macau Holy House of Mercy is included on the World Heritage List of *** the Macau Holy House of Mercy, especially the facade of its neo-classical arcade added in 1905, as the research subject, this study applied the methods of historical document research, field measurement and digital analysis, especially parametric analyses with the assistance of the modeling software of Rhinoceros 6.0 and the software plug-in of Grasshopper. And the following results were obtained: 1) its designers applied three-section partition in the horizontal and vertical directions and equal division in stratification in the overall dimension of the facade;2) its designers also applied modularization (modular) design and combination in the columns and details of doorways;3) this study found that the (successive) partition of the facade is closer to the "Golden Section" than "Root Rectangle Partition";further analyses discovered the Golden Rectangle and Golden Spiral (successive division) in the facade. The underlying aesthetics-mathematics pattern of "digitally-derived geometric design" is of significant historical value.
