A new approach for non-Gaussian vibration analysis of hyperbolic tangent package with a critical component

A new approach is proposed to analyze the non-Gaussian random vibration of hyperbolic tangent package. Firstly, the non-Gaussian vibration noise of specified mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis is developed by Hermite polynomial and verified by Gaussian mixture model theory. Secondly, next to analyzing an analytical and numerical response of the two degrees of freedom linear package, the acceleration response of the two degrees of freedom hyperbolic tangent package system under non-Gaussian vibration excitation is obtained though the Hermite polynomial and Runge-Kutta method, and the effects of the external excitation and system parameters are investigated. Finally, on the basis of the first-passage probability of the acceleration response, the reliability analysis method is introduced. The analysis provides a guidance to the vibration reliability analysis and packaging optimization design.

High and low cycle fatigue failure effects of metals predicted automatically from innovative elastoplastic equations with high-efficiency algorithms

New finite strain elastoplastic J(2)-flow equations with no reference to the yield condition are proposed for the purpose of simultaneously simulating low-to-ultrahigh cycle failure effects of metals. As inherent response features of such new equations, the entire responses up to eventual failure under cyclic and non-cyclic loadings of constant and variable amplitudes are automatically predicted, in a direct sense without involving any additional damage-like variables and any ad hoc failure criteria. The thermodynamic consistency is ensured by demonstrating that the intrinsic dissipation is identically non-negative. Furthermore, a high-efficiency algorithm for integrating the elastoplastic rate equations is established toward bypassing very time-consuming numerical procedures in treating cyclic responses with high and even ultrahigh cycle number. With numerical examples, model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with fatigue failure data for low, high and very high cycle numbers, and the new algorithm is shown to be much faster and far more efficient than usual integration procedures.

Elastic-plastic analysis of circular tunnel based on unified strength theory and considering multiple plastic zones

Considering that the internal friction angle of the surrounding rock is not a constant but a function of the mean normal stress, and the unified strength theory (UST) is used as the plastic condition of the tunnel surrounding rock, the plastic zone of the circular tunnel surrounding rock is divided into multiple annular regions. For different plastic zones, there are different yield conditions represented by different stress functions, the elastic-plastic analysis of circular tunnels is performed by using the piecewise linearization of nonlinear yield function, stress and displacement in the elastic-plastic zone and the radius of the plastic zone are obtained by combining the equilibrium equations. It is shown that the radius of the plastic zone increases, the radial stresses in the elastic-plastic zone and the circumferential stresses in the plastic zone become smaller and the circumferential stresses in the elastic zone becomes larger compared with that of only one plastic zone. By using single factor analysis method, the calculated values of the tunnel displacements and plastic radii by UST were compared with those obtained by the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) criterion, Drucker-Prager (D-P) criterion, and Zienkiewicz-Pande (Z-P) criterion. The analysis shows that under the same conditions, the solution of UST is smaller than M-C criterion and D-P criterion, therefore, the selection of rock strength criterion has great influence on the calculation of rock mechanics and engineering, the proper application of UST will guarantee the safety of engineering practice and have more practical value.

Scaling up ultrathin boat-graphane with the non-classical stiffness relation to macroscopic metamaterials

Scaling up ultrathin nanosheets with unusual mechanical properties to macroscopic metamaterials is an intriguing topic considering the significant gap of their characteristic scales. In this regard, we investigate the relation between the in- and out-of-plane stiffness of monolayer boat-graphane in two principal axis directions by quantum mechanical calculations. A non-classical relation between the two types of stiffness is found, in opposition to the classical one for orthotropic thin plates. Analytical lattice dynamics models are proposed and suggest that the two kinds of stiffness stem from different covalent interaction sources, giving rise to the discrepancy. Guided by the geometry of boat-graphane and the model predictions, the non-classical relation successfully scales to macroscopic metamaterial plates, as justified by finite element simulations. The key structural parameters for successful scaling are also explored. The present work not only enriches our understanding of the nanomechanics of ultrathin nanosheets but also suggests a novel approach to construct mechanical metamaterials.

This paper proposes a novel structural damage detection (SDD) approach by using salp swarm algorithm (SSA) combined with cosine-based indicator (CI) and sensitivity analysis on mode shape and frequency under environmental noises. The SDD problem is first converted into a mathematical constrained optimization problem while structural damage is assumed as stiffness reduction in finite element analysis. Then an objective function is defined based on the novel CI damage indicator and the changes in frequencies for effectively improving the SDD accuracy and efficiency by the sensitivity analysis of more complex structures. Finally, the SDD problem is solved by the aid of SSA. Numerical simulations on a twostory frame structure and experimental verifications on a three-story steel frame structure are both conducted to assess the performance of the proposed approach. The results show that the proposed approach can effectively locate structural damages and quantify damage extents with an exact detection accuracy and a faster efficiency.

Multi-morphology TPMS structures with multi-stage yield stress platform and multi-level energy absorption: Design, manufacturing, and mechanical properties

Multi-morphology TPMS structures have recently gained increased attention in many areas because they exhibit even more advantageous and desired properties than traditional TPMS structures with uniform unit. However, the connections between the different morphology TPMS and their mechanical properties have not been extensively investigated. In this study, the connection function when designing multi-morphology TPMS was characterized, and the multi-morphology TPMS could be manufactured by 3D printing technology. A good agreement between experimental and simulation results was achieved. According to compression test results, it was found that the multi-morphology TPMS structures have multi-stage yield platform and multi-level energy absorption differently from conventional TPMS. More closely, energy absorption capacity of N-G TPMS structure is better than P-G TPMS structure and P-N TPMS structure, and the deformation and energy absorption of multimorphology TPMS structures can be designed for impact protection requirement.

In order to discuss the influence of the number of sheets on acceleration and frequency curve of sample surface, the finite element model of clamp, SOP sample and metal sheet is firstly established with Solidworks. Different number of sheets are laid on the surface of SOP sample. Then changing the number of the paper sheets, harmonic response analysis is converted based on modal analysis. The influence of different number of sheet on acceleration and frequency curve is discussed. The results show the relation between acceleration-frequency curve of different thickness of paper, which provides reference for packaging design. © 2024 IEEE.

The locations of structural damages are normally unknown in practical engineering, and using the swarm intelligent (SI) algorithm-based structural damage detection (SDD) approach requires evaluation of the objective function for the total population in each iteration, which is time-consuming. In this study, a twostage (TS) SDD approach based on the modal strain energy (MSE) and the ALO-INM algorithm is proposed to solve these problems of the original ALO-INM-based method. At first, the potential structural damages are located by calculating the MSE change ratio (MSECR) values. These damaged elements will be further analyzed to identify and quantify the damage extents using the ALO-INM algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed TSALO-INM approach is verified using numerical simulations of a 20-element simply supported beam. The results show that the proposed approach can accurately locate damages and quantify damage extents more precisely than the original approach, and its computational efficiency is also greatly improved.

For structural damage detection (SDD), an accurate finite element (FE) model plays a vital role to evaluate structural states. Due to the ill-posedness of structural model updating problems, regularization methods have been introduced to obtain stable solutions. However, the l(q) (0 < q <= 1) norm regularization methods have strong constraint effects so they are not suitable for structural model updating. In this paper, based on properties of regularization methods, the l(infinity) norm regularization is adopted for model updating. Both l(2) and l(infinity) norm penalties are respectively chosen to define objective functions for comparative studies. Some numerical simulations in spring-mass model and simply supported beam are conducted to verify their effectiveness. The results show that the l(infinity) norm regularization has good performances in model updating problems when design variables in many elements have same order in magnitude, while the l(2) norm regularization is suitable to update stiffness changes in magnitudes for contiguous elements.
