The number of arithmetic units used in one-dimensional (1-D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is the main consideration for reducing the area of VLSI implementation of 1-D DWT, while the size of intermediate memory used for data buffering is another dominate factor of effecting hardware complexity of VLSI implementation for two-dimensional (2-D) DWT. In this paper, we exploit the essential relationship between the size of temporal buffer (TB) required in the line-based architecture for 2-D DWT (LBA2DDWT) and the number of register used in 1-D DWT module, and present an improved method of mapping the registers used in 1-D DWT to the TB required in LBA2DDWT. Comparison results with the other design reported in previous literature demonstrate that, the proposed mapping method can reduce efficiently the size of memory required in LBA2DDWT. © 2005 IEEE.

OFDMA-based network performs well in maximizing the overall throughput, and meanwhile, problems with security requirements are focused to satisfy the increasing needs of confidential data transmissions. According to information theory, however, secure transmission undesirably antagonizes larger flow rate, thus a tradeoff is expected to balance these two matters. In this paper, we consider a downlink situation in OFDMA network, where all users request secure transmission from the base station yet the resources including power and subcarriers are limited such that an appropriate policy on resource allocation can play an instrumental role. Dynamic queueing and Lyapunov optimization are two highlights in this process. We utilize dynamic queueing so that merely instantaneous state of the network is enough, which is advantageous for easier implementations. On the other hand, by the means of Lyapunov optimization, we also prove our algorithm can obtain a performance of flow rate admission extremely close to the optimal. Applying this policy can reduce computational complexity significantly but still perform close to optimality. © 2012 IEEE.

Fuzzy DNA Strand Displacement: A Strategy to Decrease the Complexity of DNA Network Design

Toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement endows DNA nanostructures with dynamic response capability. However, the complexity of sequence design dramatically increases as the size of the DNA network increases. We attribute this problem to the mechanism of toehold-mediated strand displacement, termed exact strand displacement (ESD), in which one input strand corresponds to one specific substrate. In this work, we propose an alternative to toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement, termed fuzzy strand displacement (FSD), in which one-to-many and many-to-one relationships are established between the input strand and the substrate, to reduce the complexity. We have constructed four modules, termed converter, reporter, fuzzy detector, and fuzzy trigger, and demonstrated that a sequence pattern recognition network composed of these modules requires less complex sequence design than an equivalent network based on toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. DNA strand displacement is widely used in the construction of DNA molecule computational models. In this work, nicking enzyme is used as the input of the logic calculation model for it can cut one strand of a double-stranded DNA at a specific recognition nucleotide sequences known as a restriction site. Based on this, a variety of logic gates are designed and implemented, and a multi-person voting circuit is constructed. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Speckle is a granular noise that inherently exists in all types of coherent imaging systems. This paper presents a quantitative study on five despeckling methods such as frost filter, kuan filter, speckle reducing an isotropic diffusion, homomorphic filter and wavelet filter. We select six objective evaluation parameters, such as signal-to-ratio, contrast signal-to-noise ratio, figure of merit, least absolute error, edge protection factor, signal-to-minimum mean square error ratio, to quantify the performance of these filters. The comparative study will provide some parameter comparative reference for selecting a suitable filter in the ultrasound image processing. © 2011 IEEE.

Heart rate (HR) signal analysis is widely used in the medicine and medical research area. Physical activities (PA) are commonly recognized to greatly affect the changes of heart rate. A method of Evolutionary Neural Network - Neuro-evolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) is used to build a PA-based HR predictor model. Through special coding, crossover and mutation operator, NEAT can implement network topology and connectivity weights evolution simultaneously. The common problem in evolutionary neural network, like competing conventions, how to protect the new innovation are effectively solved. The experimental results demonstrated the application potential of the approach. © 2011 IEEE.

An efficient generic architecture for two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2-D DWT) with line-based method is proposed with using lifting scheme, in which the parallelism of four subbands transform in lifting-based 2-D DWT is exploited. The proposed architecture is designed to generate 4 subbands coefficients concurrently per clock cycle that can perform a 1-level decomposition of a N×N image in approximately N2/4 working clock cycles, which has faster throughput rate but requires less hardware cost compared to the designs reported in previous literature. © 2005 IEEE.

image fusion is an important tool in remote sensing, since many Earth observation satellites provide both high-resolution panchromatic (Pan) and low-resolution multispectral (MS) images. To date, many image fusion techniques have been developed. However, the available algorithms can hardly produce a satisfactory fusion result for IKONOS and QuickBird images. Among the existing fusion algorithms, the IHS technique is the most widely used one, and the wavelet fusion is the most frequently discussed one in recent publications because of its advantages over other fusion techniques. But the color distortion of these two techniques is often obvious. The support value fusion technique demonstrates some advantages over the conventional methods. This study presents a new fusion approach that integrates the advantages of both the IHS and the support value techniques to reduce the color distortion of QuickBird fusion results. Different QuickBird images have been fused with this new approach. Visual and statistical analyses prove that the concept of the proposed extended fast IHS (eFIHS) and support value integration is promising, and it does significantly improve the fusion quality compared to conventional IHS (eFIHS) and wavelet fusion techniques.

DNA has been used to construct a variety of nanoscale thermometers due to its unique thermodynamic properties. It has proven to be one of the most promising, yet challenging aspects of DNA-based thermometers, to obtain significant signal changes when the temperature changes slightly. Here, we propose a strategy to construct nanoscale thermometers with sensitive temperature responses based on DNA triplex. The thermometers consist of a CT-rich DNA strand and stabilizing strands, whose conformations vary with temperature. By adjusting the sequence design or introducing mismatch bases in stabilizing strands, the temperature response interval of the thermometer can be reduced to 7 ∘C, which lead to higher sensitivity compared to the interval of 12–15 ∘C for conventional designs. The temperature responses of the thermometer are characterized by fluorescence experiments. The fluorescence kinetics experiments demonstrate the good repeatability. The design of the nanothermometer will be helpful for constructing advanced nanosystem with sensitive temperature responses as well as long service times. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Augmented reality is the merging of synthetic sensory information into a user's perception of a real environment. As one of the most important tasks in augmented scene modeling, terrain simplification research has gained more and more attention. In this paper, we mainly focus on point selection problem in terrain simplification using triangulated irregular network. Based on the analysis and comparison of traditional importance measures for each input point, we put forward a new importance measure based on local entropy. The results demonstrate that the local entropy criterion has a better performance than any traditional methods. In addition, it can effectively conquer the 'short-sight' problem associated with the traditional methods.
