To diagnose sleep disorders, hours of sleep data from lots of different physiological sensors have to be analyzed. To do so, experts have to look through all the data which is time-consuming and error-prone. Automatic detection and classification of sleep related breathing disorders and arousals would significantly simplify this task. This years Physionet/CinC Challenge deals with this topic. This paper examines the use of a Long Short-Term Memory network for automatic arousal detection. On the test set, an AUPRC score of 0.14 was achieved.

The imbalanced data classification problem has aroused lots of concerns from both academia and industry since data imbalance is a widespread phenomenon in many real-world scenarios. Although this problem has been well researched from the view of imbalanced class samples, we further argue that graph neural networks (GNNs) expose a unique source of imbalance from the influenced nodes of different classes of lab.led nodes, i.e., lab.led nodes are imbalanced in terms of the number of nodes they influenced during the influence propagation in GNNs. To tackle this previously unexplored influence-imbalance issue, we connect social influence maximization with the imbalanced node classification problem and propose balanced influence maximization (BIM). Specifically, BIM greedily assigns the pseudo lab.l to the node which can maximize the number of influenced nodes in GNN training while making the influence of each class more balance. Experimental results on five public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in relieving the influence-imbalance issue. For example, when training a GCN with an imbalance ratio of 0.1, BIM significantly outperforms the most competitive baseline by 0.6% -9.8% in five public datasets in terms of the F1 score.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. Symptoms of SZ include hallucinations, illusions, delusions, lack of motivation, and difficulties in concentration. While the exact causes of SZ remain unproven, factors such as brain injuries, stress, and psychotropic drugs have been implicated in its development. SZ can be classified into different types, including paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Diagnosing SZ involves employing various tools, including clinical interviews, physical examinations, psychological evaluations, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and neuroimaging techniques. Electroencephalography (EEG) recording is a significant functional neuroimaging modality that provides valuable insights into brain function during SZ. However, EEG signal analysis poses challenges for neurologists and scientists due to the presence of artifacts, long-term recordings, and the utilization of multiple channels. To address these challenges, researchers have introduced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, encompassing conventional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods, to aid in SZ diagnosis. This study reviews papers focused on SZ diagnosis utilizing EEG signals and AI methods. The introduction section provides a comprehensive explanation of SZ diagnosis methods and intervention techniques. Subsequently, review papers in this field are discussed, followed by an introduction to the AI methods employed for SZ diagnosis and a summary of relevant papers presented in tabular form. Additionally, this study reports on the most significant challenges encountered in SZ diagnosis, as identified through a review of papers in this field. Future directions to overcome these challenges are also addressed. The discussion section examines the specific details of each paper, culminating in the presentation of conclusions and findings. © 2023,

Cardiac auscultation provides an efficient and cost-effective way for cardiac disease pre-screening. The George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge 2022 aimed to detect heart murmurs and clinical outcomes with heart sound recordings from multiple auscultation locations. Our team HearHeart proposed a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) to detect heart murmurs and a random forest model to classify clinical outcomes. 128 Melspectrogram features and wide features like the socio-demographic data and statistical features are extracted. Different techniques are employed to migrate the data imbalance and model the overfitting problem. We used two data augmentation methods, noise injection and spectrogram augmentation in time and frequency domain to increase the training samples and avoid overfitting during training. Besides, weighted loss functions are applied to both tasks to deal with data imbalance. In the end, we ensembled the models from cross-validation and used voting for the final classification. We achieved a murmur score of 0.791, and a clinical outcome score of 11731.64 on 5-fold cross-validation in the hidden validation set. While on the hidden test set, we achieved a murmur score of 0.780, and a clinical outcome score of 12110, placing our team 1st and 10th in the challenge tasks, respectively.

This paper describes the experimental framework and results of the ICDAR 2021 Competition on On-Line Signature Verification (SVC 2021). The goal of SVC 2021 is to evaluate the limits of on-line signature verification systems on popular scenarios (office/mobile) and writing inputs (stylus/finger) through large-scale public databases. Three different tasks are considered in the competition, simulating realistic scenarios as both random and skilled forgeries are simultaneously considered on each task. The results obtained in SVC 2021 prove the high potential of deep learning methods. In particular, the best on-line signature verification system of SVC 2021 obtained Equal Error Rate (EER) values of 3.33% (Task 1), 7.41% (Task 2), and 6.04% (Task 3). SVC 2021 will be established as an on-going competition12, where researchers can easily benchmark their systems against the state of the art in an open common platform using large-scale public databases such as DeepSignDB13 and SVC2021_EvalDB14, and standard experimental protocols. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The accurate detection and quantification of activities of daily life (ADL) are crucial for assessing the health status of palliative patients to allow an optimized treatment in the last phase of life. Current evaluation methods heavily rely on subjective self-reports or external observations by clinical staff, lacking objectivity. To address this limitation, we propose a radar-based approach for recognizing ADLs in a palliative care context. In our proof of concept study, we recorded five different ADLs relevant to palliative care, all occurring within a hospital bed, from N=14 healthy participants (57% women, aged 28.6 ± 5.3years). All movements were recorded using two frequency-modulated continuous wave radar systems measuring velocity, range, and angle. A convolutional neural network combined with long short-term memory achieved a classification accuracy of 99.8 ± 0.4% across five cross-validation folds. Furthermore, we compare our initial approach, which takes into account all dimensions of the availab.e radar data, to a simplified version, where only velocity information over time is fed into the network. While these results demonstrate the high potential of radar-based sensing to automatically detect and quantify activities in a palliative care context, future work is still necessary to assess the applicability to real-world hospital scenarios.

Kalman filters (KFs) are popular methods to estimate position information from a set of time-of-flight (ToF) values in radio frequency (RF)-based locating systems. Such filters are proven to be optimal under zero-mean Gaussian error distributions. In presence of multipath propagation ToF measurement errors drift due to small-scale motion. This results in changing phases of the multipath components (MPCs) which cause a drift on the ToF measurements. Thus, on a short-term scale the ToF measurements have a non-constant bias that changes while moving. KFs cannot distinguish between the drifting measurement errors and the true motion of the tracked object. Hence, very rigid motion models have to be used for the KF which commonly causes the filters to diverge. Therefore, the KF cannot resolve the short-term errors of consecutive measurements and the long-term motion of the tracked object. This paper presents a data-driven approach that uses training sequences to derive a near-optimal position estimator. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) learns to interpret drifting errors in ToF measurements of a tracked dynamic object directly from raw ToF data. Our evaluation shows that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art KFs on both synthetically generated and real-world dynamic motion trajectories that include drifting ToF measurement errors.

Language-Agnostic Bias Detection in Language Models with Bias Probing

Pretrained language models (PLMs) are key components in NLP, but they contain strong social biases. Quantifying these biases is challenging because current methods focusing on fill-the-mask objectives are sensitive to slight changes in input. To address this, we propose a bias probing technique called lab.et, for evaluating social bias in PLMs with a robust and language-agnostic method. For nationality as a case study, we show that lab.et "surfaces" nationality bias by training a classifier on top of a frozen PLM on non-nationality sentiment detection. We find consistent patterns of nationality bias across monolingual PLMs in six languages that align with historical and political context. We also show for English BERT that bias surfaced by lab.et correlates well with bias in the pretraining data;thus, our work is one of the few studies that directly links pretraining data to PLM behavior. Finally, we verify lab.et's reliability and applicability to different templates and languages through an extensive set of robustness checks. Recent studies showed that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients improved their gait parameters while walking with rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS). They achieved a longer stride length, a reduced stride time variability and a higher walking speed. Combining RAS with mobile gait analysis would allow continuous monitoring of RAS effects and gait in natural environments. This paper proposes a mobile solution for home-based assessment of RAS by combining RAS gait training and a mobile system for data acquisition. Existing datasets were used to investigate the cadence of PD patients and to propose suitable frequencies for RAS gait training. The cadence calculation was implemented using a peak detection algorithm, which uses the time difference between two mid-swing events as stride time values. We validated our system as a whole using a cohort of 13 PD patients who performed RAS gait training. The algorithms were also validated against the eGaIT system, a state-of-the-art system, and achieved a mean F 1 score for detected strides of 97.57 % ± 0.86 % and a mean absolute error for the cadence of 0.16 spm ± 0.09 spm. This study lays the ground work for further clinical studies investigating the effectiveness of mobile RAS within a home environment.
