Smart home is one of the cutting-edge technologies in today's international intelligent building field. The smart home system has been used to adopt complex integrated wiring technology to achieve information interaction. There are several disadvantages identified with this method, for example, it needs to design in advance, layout techniques is difficult, wiring is cumbersome and so on. We propose a hybrid network programs, which combines ZigBee-based wireless sensor networks with power line carrier network. The system not only avoids cabling but also greatly enhances the system's scalability and robustness.

This paper discusses the theory behind ultrawideband (UWB) transmit waveform design, and reports a proof-of-concept UWB radio testbed with waveform level precoding. Unlike a narrow-band channel, a UWB channel contains a large number of resolved multipath components, which opens a door for exploring new features offered by UWB. Waveform level optimization is meaningful, but it is a great challenge to generate an arbitrary waveform adapting to the channel condition at Giga Hertz sampling frequency. Based on the channel impulse response (CIR) estimation available in the transmitter, a desired waveform is synthesized, aiming at performance maximization. Unique design issues, implementation solutions and results are reported. Using time reversal as an example, our demonstration has shown 3 to 4 dB gain over an ordinary single-carrier UWB system in indoor non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation environments.

Despite its grave importance, it is observed that the measurement of quantity estimates in construction sites lacks reliability from the absence of clear standards, letting the estimates to be influenced by factors including the investigator, the participants, the experience of the investigator, field circumstances and field conditions (season). However, since the information of estimates in construction sites are mostly data obtained by subjective judgment by the construction manager, thus it is difficult to expect to apply such data for management purposes, such as construction work planning and construction period computation, and construction costs. Therefore, various situations of a construction site are considered for the industry, yet the grafting of IT technology is still incomplete. As a result, this research proposes a device that introduces an image processing technology which allows the measurement of quantity estimates by a simple installation of a camera. This especially is applied to Euro Form, which is commonly used in construction sites which is not simple. In this study, an algorithm suitable to Euro Form is developed and the application is intended to be expanded in the future. ©2010 IEEE.

Machine vision has been widely deployed in many industrial applications. However, for battery scratch detection, it has yet to reach the desired maturity level. This paper presents a morphology -based automatic optical inspection method for the diagnosis of scratches on battery. Firstly, the acquired image is preprocessed to extract the region of interest for the diagnosis. Secondly, the difficult scratch and character is segmented with variation model. Thirdly, the small objects are removed from segmented image by connected components. Fourthly, holes are closed by morphology closing operation. Finally, the denoising image is subtracted from reference image and scratch detection is accomplished by thresholding. The experimental results obtained from 1000 images show that variation model and morphology operation made the proposed algorithm has good robustness to small variations of the objects shape and small gray value changes. The finger vein image acquired with an acquisition system should be properly aligned to proceed with comparing algorithm. However it is not easy to find control the points since the images are naturally blurred with an inherent scattering property. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel finger vein registration method utilizing skin surface information (i.e. wrinkles and outlines). We assumed that finger crooking was insignificant. Images were sampled with intended translation and rotation. Each time, two images were acquired successively by switching the light source;one with infrared light and the other with white light. Degree of rotation and translation of sampled image were calculated using outline features in the white light image and then the infrared image was transformed according to the calculated data. To validate our method, correlation values were computed between identical subjects and different subjects. High correlation values were shown between identical subjects whereas low values were shown between different subjects. © 2009 SPIE.

Binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) provides a wider view of fundus with stereopsis contrary to the direct one. Proposed system is composed of portable BIO and 3D viewing unit. The illumination unit of BIO utilized high flux LED as a light source, LED condensing lens cap for beam focusing, color filters and small lithium ion battery. In optics unit of BIO, beam splitter was used to distribute an examinee's fundus image both to examiner's eye and to CMOS camera module attached to device. Captured retinal video stream data from stereo camera modules were sent to PC through USB 2.0 connectivity. For 3D viewing, two video streams having parallax between them were aligned vertically and horizontally and made into side-by-side video stream for cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the data were converted into autostereoscopic video stream using vertical interlacing for stereoscopic LCD which has glass 3D filter attached to the front side of it. Our newly devised system presented the real-time 3-D view of fundus to assistants with less dizziness than cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the BIO showed good performance compared to conventional portable BIO (Spectra Plus, Keeler Limited, Windsor, UK). © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

We developed a gateway server to support various types of bio-signal monitoring devices for ubiquitous emergency healthcare in a reliable, effective, and scalable way. The server provides multiple channels supporting real-time N-to-N client connections. We applied our system to four types of health monitoring devices including a 12-channel electrocardiograph (ECG), oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ), and medical imaging devices (a ultrasonograph and a digital skin microscope). Different types of telecommunication networks were tested: WIBRO, CDMA, wireless LAN, and wired internet. We measured the performance of our system in terms of the transmission rate and the number of simultaneous connections. The results show that the proposed network communication strategy can be successfully applied to the ubiquitous emergency healthcare service by providing a fast rate enough for real-time video transmission and multiple connections among patients and medical personnel.

Our purpose is to propose a model of an integrated visual terminal for electronic money, which is a hot issue in Korea. Although numerous studies have attempted to develop various services in ubiquitous environment, there has been minimal research regarding u-Payment. The integrated visual terminal should fulfill commercial transactions occurred at on-line and off-line with various devices and ways in ubiquitous environment. We follow KSX6925, KSX6926, ISO/IEC 7816/14443, and EMV in accordance with the national standard for the terminal we develop. This paper focuses on taking a side view of service, system design, and software design. In particular, by the proposed terminal with standard Web, we provide a low-priced terminal to small businesses.

Novel fingerprint minutiae extraction algorithm using Hessian matrix

An algorithm of fingerprint minutiae extraction using Hessian matrix was proposed in order to overcome the shortcoming of Direct Gray-level Minutiae Detection (DGMD) proposed by Maio, etc., which had the failure of minutiae extraction as a result of abrupt changes of the fingerprint ridge curvature. Combining the characteristics of Hessian matrix eigenvectors and the geometry direction of fingerprint, the proposed algorithm tracked the ridges of fingerprint and extracted minutiae accurately. The experimental results based on FVC2000 show that the proposed algorithm can track the fingerprint ridge whose curvature changes abruptly. So the algorithm has achieved the total correct minutiae extraction rate of 95.5%. Moreover, the algorithm has better robustness and accuracy than DGMD algorithm and Hessian matrix algorithm.
