The Evolution of Rapid Production: How to Adopt Novel Manufacturing Technology

This research focuses on the evolution and adoption of rapid production. We investigate the ways novel rapid production technology offers competitive advantage to companies, and argue that benefiting from this technology requires significant changes in business beyond manufacturing. The study is centered on core areas that need to be addressed when adopting such rapid production technology: business models, processes, IPR, industry characteristics, product/service transition, logistics and materials. Of note, whereas 3D printing has been praised as the "next big thing" in personal fabrication, it is just a stage in an ongoing transition from rapid prototyping toward rapid manufacturing. In the study, we establish and discuss two frameworks: 1) evolutionary steps in rapid production, and 2) key business imperatives to be addressed when adopting rapid production technology. We conclude by arguing that all firms should adopt rapid production technology to avoid becoming at a disadvantage. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The American Society for engineering Education (ASEE) database on engineering programs and graduates indicates there are 23 programs in the United States classifying themselves as engineering management (EM). Of these 23 programs, only five are ABET accredited EM programs. Additionally, there are six ABET accredited EM programs not listed in the ASEE database. Overall, there are only 11 ABET accredited EM programs on a national basis (programs with management in the name). Although it is unclear why the majority of the EM programs do not pursue ABET accreditation, one possible explanation may be a lack of understanding on what curricular topic may or may not qualify as an engineering credit. Further complicating this question is how the program criteria of EM are fulfilled and how that course work relates to the engineering credit count. Especially problematic in the process of balancing these requirements and constraints is the limit of total program credits. This paper provides a first step in exploring these issues by analyzing current ABET EM programs and documenting the allocation of engineering topic (ET) hours along with how they satisfy program criteria. The paper examines the allocation of credits and generalizes the approach employed by these programs to accomplish the required engineering credits and the program criteria. We found that there was a disparity in ET content in like courses;especially for the less technical topics. Also, programs that taught the courses within the department, in general were able to claim higher ET hours than those where the less technical topics were taught outside the department. © American Society for engineering Education, 2015.

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) represents a growing source of potentially valuable data for many applications, including land cover map validation. It is still an emerging field and many different approaches can be used to take value from VGI, but also many pros and cons are related to its use. Therefore, since it is timely to get an overview of the subject, the aim of this article is to review the use of VGI as reference data for land cover map validation. The main platforms and types of VGI that are used and that are potentially useful are analysed. Since quality is a fundamental issue in map validation, the quality procedures used by the platforms that collect VGI to increase and control data quality are reviewed and a framework for addressing VGI quality assessment is proposed. A review of cases where VGI was used as an additional data source to assist in map validation is made, as well as cases where only VGI was used, indicating the procedures used to assess VGI quality and fitness for use. A discussion and some conclusions are drawn on best practices, future potential and the challenges of the use of VGI for land cover map validation.

The new trends and developments in the novel functional materials and material research innovations presented at the 3rd Global Conference on Materials science and engineering (CMSE2014), which was held on 20-23 October 2014 in Shanghai, China, is discussed. R. Toyoda, M. Tawata, M. Hashimoto, and Y. Matsumura presented 'Internal stress control of transition-metal thin films', where the effects of ion bombardment parameter Pi on the internal stress of thin films were evaluated. X.G. Wang, Z.L. Chen, and X.Y. Wang presented their study 'Measurement of the interface characteristic based on ultrasonic longitudinal wave', which provided a lucrative alternative to conventional ultrasonic techniques, since it allows one to avoid the mutual superposition of reflected waves at the same thin coating interface. P. Wang and C.Y. Zhao presented their 'Study on reducing railway noise by porous concrete sound-absorbing panel', which is crucial for noise reduction near the railway lines. In the paper entitled 'Numerical study on the heat preservation of the ladle used for twin-roll strip casting', J.H. Dong, M. Chen and N. Wang developed a 3D mathematical model, in order to analyze the heat transfer and temperature drop on the ladle using the finite volume method.

In this study, we have investigated the interactions that inclination perception affected by visual stimulations. In virtual reality (VR) research and development activities, multimodal stimulations are presented to operators and observers, and the observed interactions and perceptions stimulated by those interactions are investigated. The results of those investigations are then used to enhance the VR experience effectiveness. Realities are improved by multi-modal displays featured with motion platform providing visual and inclination information. However, the inclination perception affected by visual stimulation has not been studied sufficiently. In this paper, we have investigated inclination perception in pitch direction affected by the size and velocity of visual objects and human postures. It was found that the velocity of visual objects increases the sensitivity of inclination perception more significantly than the size. In addition, larger interaction between the sight and somatic sensation was observed with sitting posture than with standing posture for the effective information presentation. © 2015 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The particular solutions(PS) and fundamental solutions(FS) in polar coordinates can be found in many textbooks, but with much less coverage in elliptic coordinates [1]. Since the elliptic domains with elliptic holes may be found in some engineering problems, the PS and the FS expansions in elliptic coordinates are essential for numerical computations. For Dirichlet problems of Laplace's equation in elliptic domains, the null field method(NFM), the interior field method(IFM) and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) are reported in [2]. There seems to exist very few reports for mixed problems, where the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are assigned on the exterior and the interior boundaries, simultaneously. This paper is devoted to such mixed problems by the NFM and the IFM, and the explicit algebraic equations are derived for elliptic domains. Besides, other effective particular solutions(PS) are sought, and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) [3] is employed. The CTM may be used for Robin problems in elliptic domains. The effective algorithms for the mixed problems of Laplace's equation on elliptic domains are the main goal of this paper.
